ISIS claims responsibility for Russian jet crash that killed 224

These are the first images of the mangled wreckage of the Russian passenger jet that crashed this morning, killing all 224 people on board.

The harrowing photos were released by the office of Egyptian Prime Minister Sharif Ismail, who visited the crash site in the Sinai Peninsula.

They show the destroyed interior of the Irish-owned aircraft, which split apart upon impact, killing 192 adults, 25 children and seven crew members.

It comes as officials have recovered the Airbus A321's black box, which is now being examined by experts to determine the cause of the disaster.

The Islamic State group affiliate in Egypt has claimed it downed the aircraft, but has not said how it might have done so.

Cairo and Moscow, however, have denied any possible terrorism link in the incident, one of the deadliest Airbus crashes in the past decade.

This evening, the prime minister's office said: 'The black box was recovered from the tail of the plane and has been sent to be analysed by experts.'

It added that more than 45 ambulances have been dispatched to the crash site, with rescuers having recovered 129 victims' bodies so far.

The jet, which was leased by a Russian airline and carrying package holiday passengers back to St Peterburg in northern Russia, plummeted to the ground less than 25 minutes after it took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik. It crashed in the Hassana area, south of Arish, officials said.

Burger King have launched a bid to become the first fast food chain to sell alcohol in its UK restaurants.

The restaurant chain wants to sell plastic bottles of American beer to be drunk on the premises from this month.

It has applied for drinks licences at four UK branches - Newcastle-under-Lyme, Blackpool, Hull and Bury St Edmunds - from 10am to 11pm seven days a week.

Burger King have applied for a licence to sell alcohol with their food. If the licence is granted they would become the first UK fast food restaurant to serve booze
If the licence is granted Burger King could apply for more licences nationwide.

A spokeswoman for the company in Britain said: 'We're just catching up with the rest of the world really.'

Meanwhile, rivals McDonald's said serving alcoholic drinks was not something customers had asked for.

A message on the fast food restaurant read: 'We develop our menu based on what our customers tell us they like and want from a visit to McDonald's.

'Although a number of European McDonald's markets serve alcoholic beverages as part of their menu, this is not something that we have experienced customer demand for or something that fits with the family-friendly focus of our restaurants in the UK.'

The cancer grenade: How tiny bubbles carrying drugs in the blood can blast tumours

The cancer grenade: How tiny bubbles carrying drugs in the blood can blast tumours

Scientists have created 'drug grenades' armed with heat sensitive triggers
Microscopic bubbles loaded with drugs are injected into the drug stream
When they reach the tumour the bubbles explode targeting the tumour
Treatment could reduce debilitating side effects caused by chemotherapy
By Ben Spencer Medical Correspondent For The Daily Mail

Scientists have developed drug ‘grenades’ armed with heat sensitive triggers which promise to revolutionise the war on cancer.

The breakthrough means the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy could be reduced and cheap medication made more effective.

Experts at Manchester University have developed tiny ‘grenades’ – microscopic bubbles which are loaded with lifesaving drugs and then injected into the bloodstream. When the bubbles – called liposomes – reach a tumour they explode, delivering chemotherapy drugs exactly where they are needed.

The cancer grenade: How tiny bubbles carrying drugs in the blood can blast tumours

The technology has the potential to transform the lives of countless patients. Sending medication directly to a tumour would make it far more effective.

And because the entire blood stream is not being flooded with the drug, the usual gruelling side effects of chemotherapy would be vastly reduced.

There would be less nausea and hair loss, and a lower risk of infection.

Scientists have for years been trying to come up with better ways to deliver chemotherapy.

A glass of Coke could be an unlikely new weapon against cancer.

Tests have shown it boosts the amount of medicine absorbed into the blood when patients swallow cancer pills.

Researchers at Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands discovered the drink’s benefits when they tested it on patients taking lung tumour pill Tarceva.

They believe the same effects are likely to be seen in a dozen other drugs for breast cancer, kidney cancer and leukaemia.

A 250ml glass of regular Coca-Cola increased drug absorption by an average of 40 per cent. Other cola brands are likely to work just as well.
Teams around the world are working on ‘nanotechnology’ methods such as this to carry drugs safely through the body.

But while several have come up with microscopic capsules to carry drugs through the blood stream, few have worked out how to get them to release the medication in exactly the right place.

The Manchester team solved this problem by developing tiny heat-sensitive capsules made of cell membrane. The bubbles are stable at a normal 37C blood temperature but when temperatures rise by 5C they burst, releasing the drugs.

To achieve this the tumour is heated to 42C, either by a hot pad or warm water bath if the cancer is near the surface, or via a long hot needle if it is deep in the body.

The Manchester academics, who will present their results at the National Cancer Research Institute Cancer Conference, which starts today in Liverpool, have shown their technology works in mice.

Several other teams are carrying out nanotechnology clinical trials on humans, using slightly different delivery techniques.

But Manchester University’s Professor Kostas Kostarelos said these methods are flawed as the liposomes burst too early, releasing the drugs in the wrong place.

The breakthrough means the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy could be reduced and cheap medication made more effective (file picture)
His team are convinced their heat-sensitive liposomes hold huge potential as they hold the drugs safely until they reach just the right temperature.

Professor Kostarelos added: ‘Once they reach a “hotspot” of warmed-up cancer cells, the pin is effectively pulled and the drugs are released.’

If the Manchester team are successful, and the work is still at an early stage, doctors could make better use of cheap existing drugs by more effectively delivering them to the right part of the body.

Serious Gobe!! 144 Virgins To Organise Birthday Party For Olumba Olumba Obu In Calabar

144 virgins from the Olumba Obu`s fold are warming up to organize a lavish banquet for their father in the lord, Leader Olumba Olumba Obu, to mark his birthday which comes up in November.

Speaking to journalists on the theme for this year`s birthday activity, which a close source to Olumba Obu, said would be centered on “World Peace” at the Headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star in Calabar.

Chairman Planning Committee, Dr. Goodnews Brownson, said that this year father’s birthday celebration is earmarked to impact much on the less privileged like orphans and prison inmates, and award scholarships to indigent and intelligent students to pursue undergraduate programmes at the nation`s tertiary institutions.

Brother Goodnews maintained that Obu`s birthday marking would attract dignitaries from the Nigeria`s entertainment industry like Nollywood stars, captains of industries, business tycoons, academic icons and religious adherents from various denominations.

According to him, top on the agenda would be welfare visitations which had been packaged to bring succour to under privileged people, adding that Olumba would use the opportunity to consolidate on his support to orphanages and prisons, including scholarship awards to indigent people.

The Planning Committee Chairman enumerated Obu`s strides to include establishment of orphanage called Mother Theresa`s Home (The Redeemed Home) where he is catering for over one hundred children and Brotherhood colleges in Nigeria including some economic ventures to support them.

Dr. Goodnews maintained that the event will create a platform for friends and associates of Olumba Obu to dine with the father.

PDP’s Olisa Metuh untrainable, out of control — Lai Mohammed

PDP’s Olisa Metuh untrainable, out of control — Lai Mohammed

Lai Mohammed

The All Progressives Congress on Saturday said the resort to ‘crude’ personal attacks by the spokesperson of the PDP, Olisa Metuh,‎ in his latest statement is a clear vindication of the party’s (APC’s) stand that the PDP should urgently rebrand or go into extinction.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party said with a “combustible and out-of-control spokesman like Metuh, there is no way the PDP will survive in opposition”

”Metuh has shown, time and again, that he lacks the temperament, presence of mind, sobriety, analytical mind, decency in the use of language and panache needed for anyone to be the face of any organisation, not to talk of a political party.

”It was the realization of this obvious fact that ‎made us to offer to provide the excitable Metuh a crash course on how to function as an opposition spokesman. Unfortunately, it is too late now as he seems to have become totally untrainable.

”Instead of reacting to our sincere advice to his party to urgently rebrand or go down, Metuh chose to unleash his vitriolic tongue on the APC spokesman, just as he has done to the judiciary and many agencies of government in recent times.

”In what is surely a looming tragedy for the PDP, a spokesman who helped write the party into opposition is now poised to further write it into extinction,” ‎it said.

The APC insisted that the PDP should stop wailing and insulting the judiciary over the electoral tragedy‎ which it brought upon itself by engaging in mindless rigging and violence in the last general elections.

”The doomed opposition should also immediately stop its failed strategy of trying to distract the Buhari Administration, which is busy cleaning up the mess left behind by the 16 years of locust of the sinking ‘PDP,” the party said.

Obafunwa, embattled LASU VC bows out of office

Angry workers celebrate his exist, ask for acting VC

The tenure of Prof John Obafunwa, the embattled Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU) ended today amidst jubilations by the angry staff of the institution.

Prof Obafunwa was appointed the 7th Vice Chancellor of LASU by the immediate past governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola on November 1, 2011.

Obafunwa who came third in the selection exercise was the choice of few LASU union leaders who ensured the governor picked him ahead of the first and second Professors.
The four staff unions began week-long activities to celebrate his exit which include prayer and fasting and would end with Independence Day and funfair on Monday, November 1.

Within a year, Prof Obafunwa experienced  violent students protest in January 2013 and was rescued and smuggled out in disguise by the police to escape the wrath of the angry students over the closure of the registration portal.

His administration settled down after the protest and Obafunwa was able to hold two convocations uninterrupted but the third one was marred by a violent protest by the four staff unions over unmet demands and arrest of their members.

On November 2014, in what appeared to kick start his second term ambition, the VC rolled out the drum to celebrate 3rd year of his administration. But the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) faulted the achievements and credited some of it to the former VC, Prof Lateef Hussien.

According to the VC, on assumption of office, his administration set out and has continued to pursue without distraction, a strong mission on the LASU project, meant to reposition the university for excellence and re-package its academic programmes for the purpose of fulfilling the contemporary academic needs and challenges of the 21st Century and producing graduates that are employable and also as employers of labour.

In the 48-page document titled ‘’1095 days in office’’, the VC said his administration worked tirelessly at ensuring prompt response to students matters, scholarships and bursary, regular matriculation exercise for newly admitted students, staff and students identification cards, review of students handbook, LASUSU e-voting system, management interactive session with students while on accreditation, he disclosed that relevant bodies accredited its professional courses.

On establishment, resuscitation and repackaging of academic programmes, he said some rested courses were repacked which include, LASU External System, LASU Foundation, open and distance learning institute, pre-degree science programme, internal part-time programme.

Other achievements are staff promotion, prompt payment of salaries, production of 56 doctorate degrees, provision of loan to staff, payment of 17 months arrears of salary increment, resuscitation of TETFUND, renovation of staff quarters, robust welfare package, promotion of sports and recreational activities, improved internet services, beautification of LASU, hosting of Governor Fashola’s 2,200 days in office.

On March 16, 2015 Prof Obafunwa was chased out of the campus by the workers, he has not used his office till date. He has been operating from his personal office at the Lagos State University College of Medicine.

The two large banners were placed at the Main gate along the Badagry Expressway and the Iba Expressway of the university and every day the date is changed by an unknown person to reflect the number of days remaining for Prof Obafunwa’s tenure to end.

At a briefing as part of activities to mark his exit on Tuesday, the four staff unions appealed to the governing council to appoint an acting VC to replace Obafunwa whose tenure ended Saturday, October 31 to avert a vacuum in the administration of LASU.

Nigerian Public Calls For All Ministers To Publicly Declare Assets Before Taking Oath Of Office

Nigerian Public Calls For All Ministers To Publicly Declare Assets Before Taking Oath Of Office

Ministers nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari SaharaReporters Media
This sentiment was inspired by President Buhari’s promise to disclose his own assets. The President also remarked that this action would lead to further accountability of governmental officials including his ministers.

Numerous leaders of non-governmental groups have pointed to President Buhari’s campaign promises as the justification for the public’s call for accountability.

According to the Nigerian Constitution the declaration of assets is optional, and not a legal requirement.  However, many of the NGO leaders speaking with the media stressed that it was morally necessary for the ministers to do so.

It will be recalled that over the past few weeks SaharaReporters has written exposes on various ministers in-waiting, including Mr. Rotimi Amaechi and Mr. Anthony Anwukah, detailing charges of corruption and financial malfeasance.

In the case of Mr. Amaechi, he was successfully screened by the Nigerian Senate despite the protestations of Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions Committee.  The Committee had earlier issued a report recommending that Mr. Amaechi’s screening be halted, until the Court of Appeals could issue a ruling on alleged wrongdoing during his tenure as Rivers State Governor.

Speaking to Punch Newspaper Mr. Alhaji Olola Kasumu, the president of Afonja Descendants Union (ADU), stressed that President Buhari’s entire anti-corruption effort could be derailed if the ministers did not declare their assets.

He went on to say, “It is part of the campaign promises of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that its appointees and elected officials will publicly declare their assets. The much needed change will be elusive if they do not declare their assets publicly.”

Lamar Odom: Begging For Drugs in Hospital?

Lamar Odom: Begging For Drugs in Hospital?

Prior to the overdose that nearly cost him his life earlier this month, Lamar Odom had struggled with substance for years.

Now that he's on the mend, Khloe Kardashian has agreed to give their marriage a second chance on the condition that Odom never use drugs again. Now, it looks like Lamar might already be doing his best to break that promise.

There's been good news and bad news regarding Odom's condition today, as it was confirmed this morning that Odom is off of dialysis, out of the ICU, and able to communicate with hospital staff.

The bad news is that according to Radar Online, Odom's improved communication abilities have led to some troubling requests from doctors:

“Lamar was moved out of ICU earlier this week because of the progress that has been made. He is no longer on dialysis," says one insider.

"But there are concerns because Lamar has been asking for copious amounts of pain medication, including Oxycontin.

“It’s a dilemma for the doctors because the pain has to be treated. But with Lamar’s history of substance abuse, they are trying to give him other pain medications that aren’t as powerful. However, Lamar complains that it’s not strong enough.”

Opiates were among the drugs found in Lamar's system after his overdose, so it's not surprising that doctors are hesitant to prescribe Odom anything that could land him back at square one in terms of his addiction.

Adding to the medical staff's concerns are the reports that Odom was visited by his drug dealer earlier this week.

Nigerian journalist threatened for alleging rape at a boys' school

Nigerian journalist threatened for alleging rape at a boys' school

Abuja, Nigeria, October 30, 2015--A radio journalist told the Committee to Protect Journalists on Thursday that he had been threatened by three men after he reported on the alleged rape of students in a boys' school in Nigeria's northern city of Kano.

"The threat against Nasir Salisu Zango is a threat to the public's right to know what is happening in society," said Peter Nkanga, CPJ's West Africa representative. "CPJ calls on Nigerian authorities to ensure Zango's safety and apprehend the individuals behind the threats."

Nasir Salisu Zango, a reporter for the privately owned station Freedom Radio and Hausa correspondent for the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, told CPJ that three men dressed in civilian clothes who claimed to be police officers came to his house early Thursday morning and asked him to stop reporting on the alleged rape of school boys in Hassan Ibrahim Gwarzo Secondary School.

The men said he would face consequences if he did not stop, but did not elaborate.

Magaji Musa Majia, police spokesman in Kano State, told CPJ he was not aware of the allegation that police were involved in the threats against Zango because no official complaint on the case had been filed to the police.

On Wednesday night and again early Thursday morning, Freedom Radio broadcast a Hausa-language program, called "Inda Ranka" which included an interview Zango conducted with a 13-year-old boy who had been admitted to a hospital after allegedly being raped.

The boy said that at night unknown male individuals forcefully and repeatedly had sex with new students in the school.

Zango also interviewed the boy's mother, who said that school authorities were preventing several other boys from seeking medical attention outside the school because they were trying to conceal the crime.

The Kano State government ordered the school to be closed today and began conducting an investigation into the allegations, according to news reports.

Mallam Bashir, the school's principal, told CPJ he was aware of Zango's report about the school and that police were investigating. Ibrahim Ayagi, the school's proprietor, denied to CPJ that students were sexually abused or prevented from seeking medical attention.

He said he would seek legal action against the radio station for spreading falsehood about the school

Local journalists told CPJ that Zango's life could be in danger for reporting on the alleged rapes, the topic of which was taboo. Zango told CPJ he was not intimidated by the threats and that he was doing a follow-up to his first report.

KANO, Nigeria (AP) -- Nigerian officials have ordered a boarding school closed and police are investigating a boy's allegations of brutal and repeated sexual assault.

Authorities in Nigeria's northern Kano city acted late Friday after a nurse refused to treat the child unless police were informed because of the gravity of his injuries, his mother told the Freedom Radio station.

She said her 11-year-old son complained his bottom was so sore he could not walk. She said the child told her he had been repeatedly raped in his dorm at night by an unknown person. Journalist Nasir Zango, who interviewed her, said he has since received death threats.

Officials of the Hassan Ibrahim Gwarzo College declined comment. Kano state set up a commission of inquiry and police confirmed they also are investigating.

PDP Attacks Lai Mohammed Again

PDP Attacks Lai Mohammed Again

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has again come against Lai Mohammed, the spokesman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing him as “a quarrelsome and misguided individual”.

It also said that APC spokesman, who was approved as minister, will end up as a minister without portfolio in President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The PDP named him “completely unfit” to hold a responsible national office in a democratic cabinet.

Olisa Metuh, party’s national publicity secretary, in a statement issued on October 31, Saturday, said that the stubborn nature, resort to personal attacks and uncouth description of a rival political party by the APC spokesperson while answering to critical matters were indicative of his background, pedigree, upbringing and emptiness as a low life.

The party further urged Mohammed to “shed his offensive narcissist tendencies even in his desperation not to end up being a minister without a portfolio”.

The opposition party admonished APC spokesman that “having been a beneficiary of the benevolence and forgiving spirit of the senate president, one would expect him now to be mature, decent, civil and more organised in his responses to public comments”.

Ministers To Watch In Buhari's Cabinet

The ministerial screening of President Muhammadu Buhari’s nominees for his cabinet has come and gone, but the memories of the widely televised event will linger on for a while.

The 8th Senate has completed the screening of Buhari’s nominees and approved them as ministers but their portfolios still remain a mystery.

Meanwhile, The BBC has listed seven interesting characters in Buhari’s cabinet that we should look out for. Read below (edited slightly):

Ministers To Watch In Buhari's Cabinet

1. Babatunde Fashola
It is not surprising that Fashola made the list. His achievements during his tenure as governor of Lagos state – Nigeria’s commercial capital – makes him a good asset. He is credited with bringing an element of order to the chaotic city through massive infrastructure development that included demolishing illegal structures to pave the way for new road projects.  As a senior lawyer and experienced administrator, it won’t be surprising if he is asked to head the justice ministry. The president has promised to root out corruption and bribery allegations that tainted the image of Nigeria’s judicial system.

Ministers To Watch In Buhari's Cabinet

2. Dr Ibe Kachikwu:
The former Exxon Mobil executive vice-chairman was appointed by President Buhari in August to head the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), an organisation vital to Africa’s largest economy but notorious for corruption and mismanagement. Many analysts believe his appointment has started to yield results. It is surprising that he has now been asked to join the cabinet and is very likely to be appointed a minister in the oil ministry. This means a new NNPC head may have to be appointed. Even though the president has said he will oversee the ministry himself, most of the work and reforms he plans to carry out will be handled by Kachikwu. It will be interesting to see how he will help Buhari clean up the oil sector and recover the mind-boggling sums he said had been stolen.

3. Amina Mohammed:
She is a well-known technocrat within and outside Nigeria. She has more than 30 years of experience in the field of development, including as Nigeria’s presidential adviser on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). She was credited with designing and developing several government projects aimed at reducing poverty. Before joining the cabinet, Ms Mohammed was the Special Adviser to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on post-2015 development planning. Her eloquence and globally-exposed experience in development and management could be an asset to the government if correctly exploited.

4. Rotimi Amaechi:
He is the most controversial of all the appointees even though his inclusion did not come as surprise. As President Buhari’s campaign director, many Nigerians see Amaechi’s appointment as pay-back for the role he played in the president’s victory during the election. However, his choice has been heavily criticised after he was indicted by Rivers state’s panel of inquiry for allegedly enriching himself during his eight-year tenure as the state’s governor. He denied all the allegations and said they were politically motivated. He also took the commission to court. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) tried to block his appointment but the ruling party used its majority to get him through.

5. Abdurrahman Dambazau:
As Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff between 2008 and 2010, he led a successful campaign against militant Islamist group Boko Haram. After he was sacked, the militants regrouped in 2011. Since then, thousands of people have been killed and the insurgency has spread to neighbouring countries. Tackling the group is one of Buhari’s top priorities, so it will be interesting to see how Dambazzau will tackle the conflict now, assuming he is asked to head the ministry of defence as expected.

6. Kemi Adeosun:
She is an economist and financial expert who was educated and worked in the UK before going back to Nigeria to serve as a commissioner of finance in the south-western state of Ogun. Many expect her to be posted to the finance ministry. During her presentation to the Senate, she said funds allocated for various projects are being diverted and identified ways to stop this happening. She also said the country cannot afford to continue spending 78% of its budget on paying civil servants’ salaries and other ongoing costs. It will be interesting to see how the financial markets, investors and ordinary Nigerians will react to her appointment and whether she will be able to transform the country’s struggling economy.

7. Chief Audu Ogbeh:
As a veteran politician with four decades of experience, Ogbeh, 68, is known to be independent-minded and self-willed and has served in several previous governments. Many remember him for his public row with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2005, when he was chairman of the then PDP. He was forced to resign from the position after accusing Obasanjo of interfering in party affairs. Ogbeh is an experienced farmer who is expected to be appointed to lead the vital agriculture ministry. Nigeria has a vast tracts of land that analysts say, if used properly, could create jobs for the country’s army of unemployed youths and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on oil. Nigerians will be hoping that he is able to bring this theory to reality.

Wizkid Attacks Nigerian Bloggers on Twitter, Calls them Dumb

Wizkid Attacks Nigerian Bloggers on Twitter, Calls them Dumb

Star Boy Entertainment singer, Wizkid is in the eye of the storm again. This time, some students of the American University of Nigeria in Adamawa, accused him of failing to honour an invitation to perform in their school, even after he had been paid the sum of N8.9m.

One of the students with the name @Mr Tawiti went on Twitter to attack Wizkid in a series of tweets. He accused Wizzy of failing to show up at their school, after he had allegedly been paid N7m as artiste’s charge, N1.2m for Logistics, as well as feeding and accommodation for ten people who were supposed to come with the ‘Pakurumo’ singer.

@Mr Tawiti also stated that Olamide had initially turned down their offer, claiming that he can’t afford to come to the North for just N4m. However, Wizkid, in his characteristic manner, did not take it lying low, as he also took to his Twitter handle with guns blazing towards bloggers. He wrote, ‘Even when you’re trying to be lowkey and keep it cool, they still try to spread false rumours.

I love my fans in the north. Love to you and yours…so anyone can get a Twitter account and tweet something crazy about you and the dumb ass bloggers will share the story without confirmation? I just wanna (sic) make music, perform to my amazing fans and live my life low key! No bad vibes!!’

It should be recalled that this isn’t the first time Wizkid will be having this type of issue with students. In 2013, some students of the University of Lagos had dragged him to the police on the allegation that they paid him for a show, but he refused to perform. Wizkid later stated that it was a case of mistaken identity as the person who the students communicated with about the show wasn’t a member of his team.

Meanwhile, efforts to contact Wizkid and his team proved abortive as at the time of filing this report, even as the student maintained that Wizkid was actually paid the said sum of N8.9m after long negotiations.

City News gathered that the deceased, a newspaper vendor, simply identified as Mama Favor, was carrying the baby on her back as she dashed to across the ever-busy expressway when a hit-and-run driver knocked her down.

A witness said the baby was flung into a gutter by the roadside while the mother  lay lifeless on the centre of the road.

The witness who faulted the deceased for not making use of the pedestrian bridge, said she was still lying unconscious on the road and about three other cars ran over her before her body was evacuated.

He said the driver ran away while the mangled corpse was moved away by NEMA officials and police officers who arrived the scene almost immediately, adding that the baby was rescued alive.

‘Nigerians should cultivate habit of writing wills’

‘Nigerians should cultivate habit of writing wills’

Director Business Development of ARM Pension, Mr. Abisola Onigbogi, has stressed the need for Nigerians to cultivate the habit of writing their wills.

Onigbogi, who gave the advice at a front desk customer forum organised by the company, said the development was necessary to avoid crises among the family after the contributor dies.

“If you die without a will your beneficiary will have a difficult time accessing the benefit, if there is no will in place we have little control and that is what we are passing across to our customers,” he stated.
The company’s director, Mrs. Kemi Oluwasina said pension desk officers’ customer forum is the best way to relate with customers.

She noted that the pension industry was highly regulated which was important to have the right information that would help contributors personally.

“This is as an industry where we have pension money growing daily, as at today we have over N5 trillion in the industry in assets belonging to over 6 million Nigerians, it is important to protect those assets because we don’t want to have worked all this years and the money in the case of demise goes to the hands of the wrong person,” Oluwasina said.

Kogi election; Immigration warns foreigners

Kogi election; Immigration warns foreigners

The Nigeria Immigration Service in Kogi on Saturday cautioned immigrants against taking part in the Nov. 21 governorship election.

The NIS Controller in the state, Mr Baba Zakari, made this known when he addressed representatives of Ghanaian and Nigeriene nationals resident in Kogi.

Zakari urged them to steer clear of the polling centres and units on the Election Day, saying that immigrants had no right to vote in any government-organised elections in the country.

Giving further clarifications, the Controller said that though nationals of ECOWAS countries who had genuine travel documents could reside in any part of the country to carry out their legitimate businesses, they had no voting rights.

“You have no right to take part in any elections in this country. If any of you has registered, it is illegal and you should not take part in the election because Immigration officials will be at all the polls,’’ he warned.

He added that violators would be promptly apprehended and arraigned accordingly, adding that all the registered political parties in the state had at a meeting with the Police Command pledged to promote free and fair election.

“The parties were told not to mobilise non-nationals to vote for them.

On calls to give temporary travel documents to illegal immigrants to check their activities in the country, Zakari said his office had no authority to issue any resident permit other than relevant travel documents.

He explained that any immigrant that had no passport or ECOWAS travel document if arrested would be deported immediately.

Responding on behalf of the foreigners, the President of Ghana Community in the state, Mr Edwin Ansah, pledged that they would not violate the law.

Ansah, however, urged the service to take measures to check the influx of illegal immigrants who come into the country through illegal routes.

He recalled that a Ghanaian who dealt in herbal drugs duped someone to the tune of N1.5 million and he (the President) was arrested.

An alternative measure he said was for the service to give temporary documents to illegal immigrants so as to regulate their activities.

Court convicts 95 sanitation offenders

Court convicts 95 sanitation offenders

Two Mobile Courts sitting in Benin on Saturday convicted 95 people for various sanitation offences in the state monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

Chief Magistrate Ihenyen Aigbediofe convicted 60 people at Kilometre 6, while Magistrate Osamudiamen Afe, convicted 35 people at Oredo.

While some were convicted for not participating in the exercise, the others were convicted for wandering and obstructing sanitation officials from discharging their duties.

The presiding Magistrates sentenced the accused persons to various terms of imprisonment or an option of fines of between N5,000 and N7,000, respectively.

The Chief Prosecution, Mr Pius Oiwoh, advised the people to always obey sanitation laws to avoid conviction.

Mr Yusuf Osagie, the Chairman of the Edo State Committee on Environment, described cleanliness as next to godliness

Osagie said the punishment would serve as a deterrent to others who deliberately violate sanitation law, adding that the offences contravened the Edo State Sanitation law.

He advised churches to close from their prayer programmes early before the commencement of the exercise.

“They call me baba go slow, but I will go slow and steady” – Buhari replies critics

“They call me baba go slow, but I will go slow and steady” – Buhari replies critics

Those in the habit of criticizing President Muhammadu Buhari may be expending energy on a futile exercise as he has vowed not to lose sleep over criticisms that may come his way.

Noting that he wants to be remembered as a president who fought corruption to a standstill, he promised to remain resolute in wagging the anti-corruption war.

Speaking during a press conference after the India-Africa Summit, which took place in New Delhi, Buhari called on Nigerians, who are not corruptly enriching themselves with public funds, not to be afraid of the fight against corruption, adding that they should rather encourage him to get whoever had compromised his position and the trust given to him.

The President, whose government has security, economy and the fight against corruption main focus and is regularly bashed for the pace of his government, said “They call me baba go slow, but I will go slow and steady”.

On Racism, he said it is the state of mind of people, individuals which a nation state cannot absolutely control. So I don’t think people should be preoccupied if somebody says ‘get away you black man’ or whatever,” said Buhari.

Wooing investors, the President assured Indians and the international community of his administration’s commitment to sustaining efforts aimed at making Nigeria an envy of all.

He urged them to avail themselves of the conducive environment that would be created for investments to thrive.

Following the confirmation of his ministerial nominees, the President disclosed that he would prune down the number of ministries so as to be able to pay salaries.

Police Investigate Killing Of Nigeria’s Tennis Star, Mc-Cleod

The Lagos State Police command has began investigation on how one of Nigeria’s celebrated tennis stars, Beauty McLeod, was allegedly killed by a policeman at Victoria Island, Lagos.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE)- based tennis star was reportedly killed last week by a trigger-happy policeman after an altercation between them along Balarabe Musa Street, Victoria Island.

Mc-Cleod who had lodged in a hotel in the area with her daughter, was said to have engaged in a heated argument with the policeman before the incident happened.

A source said that the deceased, who was shot on the leg by the policeman, was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was rejected. Mc-Cleod later died at Saint Nicholas Hospital, where she was finally admitted.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Joe Offor, stated that the policeman had been detained while investigation has commenced on the matter. Offor noted that the policeman is attached to Mountain Troop Police.

“The policeman shot a woman and she died. The policeman has been detained at Moroko Police Station,” he said.

On what transpired between the policeman and Mc-Cleod, Offor said: “We only have the policeman’s version, but the woman is dead. We can’t get to hear her side of the story. But investigations are ongoing and we have started talking to eyewitnesses.

“The story we have, however, is that the policeman and the woman live in the same compound in Victoria Island. They had been having issues.

The policeman told us they had another quarrel and that the woman attempted to disposses him of his gun. During the struggle, the gun exploded. The woman was hit. She later died.”

Fire Breaks Out At Nightclub, Leaves 27 Dead

Fire Breaks Out At Nightclub, Leaves 27 Dead

According to BBC, twenty-seven people, most of whom were teenagers and young people, have been killed after fire broke out at a nightclub in Bucharest.

The fire is believed to have been caused by fireworks that were let off inside the club. The blaze took hold at the Colectiv club on Friday night, causing a stampede for the exit.

Emergency response chief Raed Arafat said 155 people were being treated in hospitals in the Romanian capital.

“The only information we have is that fireworks were used in the club and after that the tragedy happened. Of course, this is under investigation,” Mr Arafat told the BBC.

The pyrotechnics were reportedly part of a show by a heavy metal band.

Witnesses said a spark on the stage ignited some of the polystyrene decor. A pillar and the club’s ceiling caught fire and there was an explosion and heavy smoke, they added

.“People were fainting, they were fainting from the smoke. It was total chaos, people were trampling on each other,” Victor Ionescu, who was at the club, told local TV station Antena 3.

Up to 400 people may have been inside the club, which was hosting a free rock concert.
Local journalist Sorin Bogdan told the BBC the club was in a converted former factory with two small exit doors, only one of which was possible to open initially.

A witness quoted by Romania’s state news agency said terrified concert-goers had to break the second door down to escape. Many of those being treated in hospital were suffering from smoke inhalation and severe burns, Mr Arafat said.

At least 25 people were reported to be in serious condition at the Municipal Hospital. Staff at another hospital said most of the people they treated were teenagers aged between 14 and 16.

Prime Minister, Victor Ponta said he was cutting short a visit to Mexico to return to Bucharest.
Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis wrote on his Facebook page that he was “deeply grieved by the tragic events that happened this evening in downtown.”

He added: “It is a very sad day for all of us, for our nation and for me personally.”

Chinese Billionaire Business Tycoon Arrested for Bank Robbery

Chinese Billionaire Business Tycoon Arrested for Bank Robbery

53-year-old powerful Chinese billionaire identified as Shi, has confessed to robbing a bank 16 years ago and using the money to start up his massive property business empire now worth billions.

According to the People’s Daily Online, the tycoon was arrested last week in central China’s Zhumadian city for a crime he committed in December 1999.

At that time, five armed suspects broke into a bank in the city of Zhengzhou, injuring two clerks and walking away with 2.8 million yuan (£290,000) in cash.

On the morning of October 21, more than 80 undercover police investigators rushed to the Zhumadian, Henan province, and arrested five suspects including billionaire Shi.

Shi is said to be well known in Zhumadian for being an extremely powerful and successful property tycoon. He runs a number of businesses including industrial real estates, development and trade companies, and leisure farms. All earning him a fortune.

As well as property, he has billions invested in local businesses and often hosts regular charity events. All of this has influenced the community he lives in, and after he was arrested, he admitted to breaking into the bank with four armed suspects and stealing the money 16 years ago.

Vital clue: Investigator holds the hammer that became a key part in solving the 16 year-old case
Shi told police that before the robbery in the early 1990’s, he was not satisfied with his income as a construction worker, so he gathered a group of guys who were working as painters for a secret job.

Then for three months leading up to the raid they hatched a plan to rob the bank which included a well-designed escape route. The whole process which involved the suspects dressed as business men took just five minutes.

It was a case that shocked the whole country as there have been no arrests since it took place in 1999. Many of the investigators working on the case are now retired but they never gave up. From a list of 158 suspects they eventually narrowed it down to five.

16 years later the Zhengzhou City Public Security Bureau held a press conference to confirm the mystery of the 1999 bank robbery had successfully been solved.

At the conference Police Inspector Ba Xizheng said: ‘With the modernization of criminal technology, after tireless efforts, investigators and technical personnel on-site finally found a breakthrough that led us to Zhumadian.’

A vital piece of evidence in the investigation was a hammer that was used to break the bullet proof glass during the raid.

The police managed to track down its manufacturer which led them to a market in Zhengzhou where they were sold. 24 had been bought in the time leading up to the robbery.
