Health Minister recommends partnership with private sector to revive hospitals

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, has called for the involvement of the private corporations and individuals in reviving the nation’s health sector.

He said Nigeria would have to partner interested private and corporate business owners as well as philanthropists in the society if it would become a huge and dependable health tourism destination like India and other advanced countries.

The university don said the measure became necessary in order to give Nigerians quality healthcare delivery through improved facilities, as well as discourage Nigerians from travelling abroad for medical treatment.

He spoke in Ikere Ekiti on Saturday during the Commissioning of Iyaafin Bosede Olanipekun Special Amenity Ward donated by Wole Olanipekun for Ikere Specialists Hospital.

The minister described the health sector as an area through which the welfare of the citizenry could be enhanced, noting that there was need for improved medical facilities in the Nigerian hospitals.

“The government has no option in view of this economic recession which hindered it from providing basic medical facilities than to appeal to corporate organizations to play their corporate responsibilities and individuals to play their patriotic roles to rebuild the health sector,” Mr. Adewole noted.

“The menace of increasing accidents on our roads, terrorism, robbery, poverty and outbreak of diseases have increased the health needs of the people and there is need for injection of improved personnel and complementary facilities to be able to meet their needs.

“So, allowing public-private partnership will make up for the gap in infrastructural deficit in the health sector. With this, Nigeria can be built into a health tourism destination.

“So, we are appealing to Chief Olanipekun to help sensitize people of his calibre and above on the need to donate to health sector. This will be for the benefits of all.”

The Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, while commissioning the multi-million naira medical facility, praised the donor and disclosed that the gesture would help in strengthening the secondary health sector in the State.

Mr. Olanipekun, who said the gesture was in memory of his late mother, promised to build a modern diagnostic centre in the hospital before the expiration of Mr. Fayose’s administration.
