New Telegraph Outstanding Performance Award: Dignitaries gather today to honour Obiano

Chief Willie Obiano

All is set for an evening of honour for Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, as he receives today the New Telegraph Award for Outstanding Governor of the Year 2016.

The governor will receive the award at a ceremony billed for Civic Centre, Lagos. A former Minister of Finance, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu, is to preside over the ceremony. Obiano has said the award will encourage him to work harder to spread the dividends of democracy to all parts of the state.

The governor, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Strategic Communications and Legislative Matters, Prince Oliver Okpala, had said the award, which comes from a newspaper like the New Telegraph, that has added value to the journalism profession, was a delight to him and his administration.

According to the governor, the award is a clear testimony to the fact that people are seeing and appreciating the efforts of his administration to better the welfare of the people. Obiano said he would harness the potential of the state to improve the economic fortunes of Anambrarians.

He thanked New Telegraph Newspapers for finding him worthy for the award. He also called on the management and staff of New Telegraph to continue with their drive of publishing a newspaper of superior value through balanced reporting, fairness, accuracy and objectivity.

Earlier at the weekend, Obiano’s predecessor, Mr. Peter Obi, had described the choice of his successor as the recipient of the 2016 New Telegraph Outstanding Performance Award as a wise decision.

Obi, in a statement, said the award was a testament to Obiano’s stewardship in the last two years since he started steering the ship of the state.

According to Obi, the award will also encourage the governor to focus more on touching the lives of the people.

“The New Telegraph Award for Governor Obiano is a welcome one because it is recognition of what the governor has achieved. And when a man is commended, he is encouraged to do more.

This award will spur the governor to do more for Anambra,” Obi said.

Today’s event where Obiano will receive the award is expected to be attended by top government officials, political bigwigs, captains of industry and commerce, bank chiefs and prominent indigenes of Anambra State, among others. Notable fashion designer, Mudi and Nollywood stars, including Yul Edochie, Okey Bakassi, Stephanie Okereke and Kalu Ikeagwu are among dignitaries expected to grace the presentation of the award to Obiano.

Besides Edochie, Bakassi, Okereke and Ikeagwu, other film stars to grace the occasion include Ebube Nwagbo, Arinze Okonkwo and Princess Chineke. Obiano has been receiving plaudits since New Telegraph announced him winner of the award, which Managing Director and Editor- in-Chief of New Telegraph Newspapers, Mrs. Funke Egbemode, said was informed by the efforts of the governor to rewrite history of the state, especially in the areas of security, infrastructure and business innovations.

Among those who have lauded Obiano for winning the awards are: former Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Inter Party Affairs, Senator Ben Ndii Obi; former National Chairman, All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh; National Treasurer, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Okeke Ogene and transporter and former President General, Onitsha Market Traders Association (OMATA), Chief
