Yet Again, The Dollar Crashes; Loses N25 Against The Naira In 24hrs

The Dollar

The naira continued to regain strength and appreciate in value in the parallel market on Tuesday as it was sold for N425 to a dollar.

However, it was N450 to a dollar at the close of transactions on Monday.

A survey carried out by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday at the Bureau De Change (BDC) market in Abuja revealed that BDC operators bought at the rate of N415 and sold at N425.

The BDC operators bought the Pound Sterling at N500 and sold at N510, while the Euro was bought for N420 and sold for N425.

For the inter-bank rate, the dollar exchanged for N331.6, Euro 335.75, while the pound exchanged for N394.25

Some of the BDC operators told NAN that the provision of forex by the CBN to the commercial banks was responsible for the appreciation of the naira in the market.

Mr Sani Ahmed, one of the operators told NAN that the best way to crash the high rate in the market was the continuous injection of liquidity into the market.

According to him, the appreciation of the naira is a good development for the BDC operators and other investors who require forex for their businesses.

“Now that the naira is appreciating, we make more profit because if you buy at the lower rate, you sell and make gain.

“When the cost of dollar is high, we make little profit; but when it is low, we make more profit because we buy more to sell.”

He, however, said that there was the challenge of accessing the forex from the commercial banks because of the stringent measures stipulated by the deposit money banks to obtain the forex.

“If someone applies for forex from the banks, it takes time and the process is frustrating; sometimes, they make additional demands before they issue forex to you,” Ahmed said.

Experts have, however, expressed concern about the sustainability of the measures by the apex bank.

An economic expert, Prof. Uche Uwaleke, admitted that a complete currency float was capable of unifying rates and reducing round tripping and speculative activities in the market.

He, however, said that such a measure could be suicidal for an import-dependent economy that derived much of its forex inflow from a single commodity.

He, therefore, recommended coordinated fiscal policies designed to encourage import substitution and enhance competitiveness of local production to help reverse the downward trend in the value of naira.

“Government should fast track efforts to improve the ease of doing business and the state of infrastructure in order to attract foreign investments to develop multiple streams of earning foreign exchange.

“It is only when the supply of forex is guaranteed from diversified sources that the issue of market-determined value of the naira can be tabled for consideration,” Uwalake said. (NAN)

Fayose blasts Obasanjo

Fayose blasts Obasanjo

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has asked former President Olusegun Obasanjo to stop making provocative statements that could distract and discourage Nigerians from fixing the economy.

The governor was reacting to a statement credited to Obasanjo in which he said his generation had failed the nation.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Fayose, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, said Obasanjo’s sanctimonious self-righteousness was misleading, self-serving and discomfiting, and not what the country needed at this time.

He advised Obasanjo to speak for himself rather than making a generalised statement.

“There is much suffering in the land. The people are hungry. Yet, one of those responsible for this unsavoury state of affairs relishes in adding insult to the people’s injury. He makes statements that are not only reckless but also untrue.

“Obasanjo, truly, has failed this country many times over but not all members of his generation failed this country. There are shinning lights in that generation that have served the nation well.

“How about Emeka Anyaoku, Wole Soyinka, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Prof. Ayodele Awojobi? The list is endless and they are to be found in all the nooks and crannies of this country who belong in the same generation as Obasanjo and who have done this country proud,” he said.

Fayose, however, lamented that Obasanjo wasted all the golden opportunities that he had to make this country great, first as a military Head of State and later as a two-term civilian president.

“It is too late in the day for him to now cry over other countries that have passed Nigeria by. This is mere crocodile tears when we realise that no other Nigerian leader had the opportunities that Obasanjo had to make this country great but he bungled them all.

“He should speak for himself and not rope his entire generation into his misadventure in governance. Here is a man who neither recognised nor encouraged any star except himself. He must shoot them down or disparage them.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

“For him, Obafemi Awolowo was not patriotic; MKO Abiola was not the messiah Nigeria needed; Tinubu was a rascal; Jonathan was not good; and President Muhammadu Buhari did not understand economics. Only Obasanjo is good. Only Obasanjo fought and won the civil war. Only Obasanjo understands everything – from economics to military to foreign affairs.

“Yet, this is the same Obasanjo that laid the foundation for corruption in this country with his ill-fated third-term misadventure when billions of Naira was used to bribe National Assembly members. This is the same Obasanjo that turned EFCC under Nuhu Ribadu into his private army to harass political opponents.

“Under this same Obasanjo, eight civilian governors were illegally and unceremoniously removed from office through kangaroo impeachment. Minority members of the Houses of Assembly were empowered to override the majority members. Under Obasanjo, our elections were “wuru-wuru” and “mago-mago” and we were the laughing stock of the international community.

“This same Obasanjo, who came back from prison a pauper, ask him how much he is worth today and how he made the money? The launching of his Presidential Library, which he is preparing to commission soon, attracted donations that ran into billions of Naira while he was in office. Only God knows how many more billions the commissioning will garner this time around.”

I lost my fiance 2 months to our wedding, fell in love with our bestman‎ – Allwell ademola

I lost my fiance 2 months to our wedding, fell in love with our bestman‎ – Allwell ademola

Nigerian renowned actress, filmmaker, director and musician, Allwell ademola has disclosed how she lost her husband-to-be within 2 months to their wedding.

According to her, thereafter, she started a new relationship with the man who would have been their bestman.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

She revealed that the relationship with her husband’s friend did not last more than 8 months.

Ademola was speaking in an interview with the Vanguard, where she explained why she was yet single.

She said, “I would have been married some years back, I lost my man two months to our wedding.

“He was shot by armed robbers and I mourned him for two years. After then, I went into another relationship with my best friend who was supposed to be our best man.

“[He was my friend and he later became my man’s friend.] I later realised I didn’t know him well enough after we dated for eight months.

“That was another heart break. Having suffered two heartbreaks , I decided to take it easy and fell in love with my job. For now, I am fine without a man.”

When asked how her sex life has been since she was not in a relationship, she said she has been so busy to think about sex.

She added, “Sex for me has to do with my mind. If I was in a relationship, I could be very active sexually but since I am not in a relationship, what could bring the thought of sex into my mind?

“Even when I was in a relationship, I forget about sex when I am very busy. However, because I am human and the urge comes, what I do is call some friends and we hang out together.

“Thank God, there is also sex toy. Sex toy will not break one’s heart or impregnate one. But that doesn’t mean that I use sex toy, I am telling you the options available.”

Why I will never criticize Buhari’s government – Reuben Abati

Why I will never criticize Buhari’s government – Reuben Abati

Ex-Presidential Spokesman, Reuben Abati, has said that he will never criticize President Muhammadu Buhari no matter the number of policy mistakes the federal government makes under his leadership.

Abati, who said this in Lagos during a chat with the media, maintained that President Buhari had good intentions for Nigeria and sincerely wants to leave good legacies behind him.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

He, however, said that running the federal government of Nigeria was filled with difficulties that were amplified by the rising expectations of the people.

He said that critics should understand that all the rising expectations of the people may not be immediately met and some may not be met at all.

“But, since government is a continuum, progress will be made from one administration to another.

“I’m not going to sit here and criticize President Buhari’s government, because if you go into the arena, you will see it is difficult.

“I can say categorically that it is not easy to run a country, and even more difficult to run a government in Nigeria.

“Every President has good intentions that is one of the things I discovered working with politicians. Politicians want to do well. They want to be liked. They enjoy public attention and they like to win elections.

“So no president will get to the top in Nigeria or anywhere and his intention will be to offend the people or to be remembered negatively. Once they become president, the first thing they begin to think about is legacy.

How will they be remembered? That is the highest office in the land there is nothing after that. So when they get there they would want to leave a legacy that they would be remembered for. I have seen that either by interacting with a seating president or a past president.

“And you see our democracy is evolving – you keep learning things. I think one of the early articles I wrote after I left office talks about the lessons we have been learning. Since 1999.and we will continue to learn these lessons in different direction.

“One of the issues with democracy in Nigeria is the issue of rising expectations. People have very high expectations. A government comes in after a while people will start criticizing the government. People immediately react to what they see. It is called optics in government.

“But at the end of the day, all of those expectations may not be immediately met. All of those expectations may not be met. But from one government to the other, we have been seeing that there is progress since 1999. That is something to be cheerful about”, he stated.

Ban on okada, keke will affect Nigeria’s economy – Amaechi

Ban on okada, keke will affect Nigeria’s economy – Amaechi

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that motorcycles and tricycles should not be banned nationwide because doing so would affect the nation’s economy negatively.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Amaechi said this on Tuesday in Abuja at the celebration of the national day of Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairers and Riders Association of Nigeria.

The minister advised state governments not to ban commercial cyclists but train them to reduce their recklessness on the road and ensure strict compliance with rules and regulations.

He said, “I don’t think we should ban Okada because if we do, it will affect the economy; they only need to be trained to obey rules and regulations.

“The issue of security, safety and regulation should be dealt with at the state level; state governments should train Okada riders.”

He urged the operators avoid recklessness and obey traffic rules and regulations in order to reduce the rate of accidents.

According to him, commercial cyclists play vital roles in the transportation sector, especially in transporting agricultural produce where roads are not easily accessible.

He said, “We know you play a vital role in the economy: Not all buses, taxis can access our roads for agricultural purposes; a lot of Nigerians depend on you because your services are cheap.

“The economy cannot only grow through white collar jobs; everybody doesn’t need to depend on government and what you have done is to be self-employed to feed yourselves.”

Shehu Babangida, National President of ACOMORAN, said that the day was an annual event designed to celebrate the informal sector in Nigeria.

He said the association’s 12 million membership had massively reduced the rate of unemployment and criminality in the country by engaging vulnerable youths.

The ACOMORAN president thanked the minister and former Zamfara governor, Senator Sani Yerima, as well as other dignitaries, for gracing the occasion.

She had served Ban Ki-moon, the immediate past UN secretary-general, as under-secretary-general and special adviser on post-2015 development planning.

Mohammed was instrumental in bringing about the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, including the sustainable development goals.

Before joining the UN, she worked for three successive administrations in Nigeria, serving as special adviser on millennium development goals.

She provided advice on issues including poverty, public sector reform and sustainable development, and coordinating poverty reduction interventions.

Soludo, Utomi demand immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu

Chukwuma Soludo, ex-Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, and Patrick Utomi, a professor of economics, have called for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

The thought leaders under the aegis of ‘Nzuko Umunna’, a pan-Igbo group, also called for the release of his colleagues who are in jail.

They declared that Nigeria was more divided now than before.

Delivering the statement of the group in Abuja on Tuesday, Soludo condemned the killing of IPOB members in the south-east.

Amnesty International had put the number of pro-Biafra protesters killed by security agents at 150.

He also called for an investigation of the killings.

“We are a delegation of Nzuko Umunna, a pan-Igbo group,‎” he said.

‎”We visited Nnamdi Kanu to hear his own point of view as well as share our own point of view with him.

“We believe that Nigeria has the potential to be great, and like most countries has its own challenges.

“Nigeria has never been more divided than now. Most discerning patriots have come to the conclusion that Nigeria has currently structured is destined to be a failed state‎.

“It is our considered view that most of the agitation is in response to a looting elite. We do not condone violence.

“We note that in 2015 Nigerians voted for change. As the ruling party, the APC has it duty to deliver to the Nigerian people.

“So far APC seems to have abandoned its cardinal duty to Nigeria.

‎”We are in a state of emergency at all levels.

‎”We demand the urgent release of Nnamdi Kanu, and his colleagues as part of the process of engineering a new Nigeria.

“No citizen of Nigeria deserves the treatment that is being meted to Nnamdi Kanu and his colleagues‎. Nnamdi Kanu is not above the law, and he should not be put below the law.”

The local airport in Edo State, known as ‘Benin Airport’ is to be renamed ‘Oba Erediauwa Airport,’ Daily Post is reporting.

This was sequel to a motion moved on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, by the Senator representing Edo South, Mathew Urhoghide and seconded by Senator Jeremiah Oseni (Plateau South).

Senator Urhoghide took his time to read the biography and achievements of the late Oba, stressing that, he was also instrumental to the creation of Edo State from the then Bendel State, “the role which necessarily made him the father of Edo State.”

The Senate, therefore, resolved to immortalize the late Monarch, by renaming the federal airport to ‘Oba Erediauwa Airport,’ Benin city.

The Lawmakers also urged relevant Ministry, Department or Agency, vested with the duty of effecting the resolution of the motion, to do so, “in the earliest possible time”.

I will soon expose those behind the collapse of Synagogue Church – Fani-Kayode

I will soon expose those behind the collapse of Synagogue Church – Fani-Kayode

Former Minister of Aviation and Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said he will soon reveal shocking details surrounding the collapsed of the Synagogue Church Of Nation, SCOAN, building which occurred in 2014.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Recall that the former Minister visited the founder and General Overseer of the church, Prophet Temitope Joshua, and had described him as a true and great man of God.

Fani-Kayode, who claimed he was conducting a research to unravel what brought the church guests house down, said the target of the perpetrators was Pastor Joshua and his successes.

He said, “The truth about the mysterious plane that hovered over Prophet TB Joshua’s Church before it collapsed and killed 126 people will soon be out.

“I’m still doing the research before writing and it is blowing my mind. One thing is clear- the plane brought down the building and the target was TB Joshua and his great success.

“This was an evil and cruel act and I intend to expose those that were behind it,” he said on his twitter handle, @realFFK, on Tuesday.

On 12 September 2014, a guesthouse located within the Church premises around Ikotun-Egbe area of Lagos State collapsed completely to the ground, killing 126 people in the process.

Prophet TB Joshua had cried out that a strange aircraft “hovered” above the building shortly before it fell.

Residents tie ‘Juju’ to electric pole to prevent officials from disconnecting them [PHOTOS]

Residents of a community in Oyo State have tied a local charm “juju” on their electric pole to scare off officials of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company from disconnecting their electricity cable.

This could be due to their inability to pay the estimated bills they get from officials of the electricity distribution companies.

The angry residents tied the local ‘Juju’ to a pole to deter the officials of the company from climbing the pole and disconnecting them.

Reacting to the development on the official twitter handle, @IBEDC_NG, where they also posted the image, the IBEDC believes residents were only doing that to avoid paying their electricity bills.

IBEDC wrote, “Some Nigerians will do anything to avoid paying bills. As seen in Oyo state.

OIL PRICE CRASH: We're SHOCKED At Buhari's Magic Wand That Survived Nigeria, Many Nations Are Down - OPEC Boss, Barkindo

OIL PRICE CRASH: We're SHOCKED At Buhari's Magic Wand That Survived Nigeria, Many Nations Are Down - OPEC Boss, Barkindo

Mr. Mohammed Barkindo, Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, has expressed shock that Nigeria survival as a nation during oil price crash regime was a miracle. He, however, said the worst days for Nigeria due to the low price of crude oil were over.

Barkindo said Nigeria’s ability to weather the storms of the low price of crude oil was a miracle.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, Barkindo said confidence was returning to the Nigerian petroleum industry, due largely to the major macro-economic decisions taken last year by OPEC and non-OPEC member countries.

He said: “We have gone through the worst energy cycle in recent memory. Some of us, who have been around for a quite a while, have witnessed all these five cycles and it is a consensus in terms of the gravity of these cycles, prices have crashed by over 80 per cent from the fall of 2014 to January 2016.

“How you survived as a government as an institution under this great industry remains a miracle. I have visited all other countries and I have seen how they are struggling.

“But you have weathered the storm. I think the worst is behind us, thanks to your (Nigeria’s) leadership in the run up to the historic agreement of last year, beginning with the Algiers Accord on September 20.” Barkindo commended the giant strides the country has made within this troubling period in the global petroleum industry.

“I have been visiting many countries over this period, and I have seen firsthand how they have been struggling. However, here, I think probably we have not sold our achievements effectively, widely and efficiently,” he noted.

He applauded the effort of the country in addressing the lingering issue of Joint Venture Cash Call, stating that over the years, previous administrations had battled to address the issues without success.

“Many of my colleagues that we served together would testify that government after government, we had battled with this issue continuously without solutions.

“But the day I got the information that you have been able to overcome this issue that has beleaguered this industry as well as government, I think you made my day and those of participants in the industry who know the battle of previous governments over the issue.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

“The approach has been innovative, the solution is very practical. You are clearing an overhang of debt that is too high, yet maintaining the level of production and also focusing on an incremental growth that would continue to sustain not only the industry but also the domestic economy.”

He lamented that due to the crash in the price of crude oil, Nigeria as well as other OPEC member countries have lost about $1 trillion since the crash,  in terms of deferred projects and outright cancellations across the supply chain, upstream, midstream, downstream.

He said: “This is the greatest threat that is facing future supply —the security of supply. Our industry is capital intensive; we make consistent investments in order not only to maintain current production, but also to take care of reserves that would produce as well as secure security of future supply.”

Also speaking, Kachikwu commended Barkindo for the giant strides he had taken at OPEC since his assumption of office, stating that in the past, OPEC had lost its credibility, but Barkindo had helped restored it.

A passenger on the flight said passengers suspected the plane, with flight number VL 2102, was faulty before takeoff, but they were assured by the pilot and the crew that all was well.

A few minutes after take-off, the plane had to return to the Lagos Airport due to the problem.

Speaking with Premium Times, a passenger, Oladejo Olowu, said: “They want to kill over 100 passengers with their faulty plane”

The plane was scheduled to get to Abuja before a final journey to Yola, Adamawa State.

The Medview incident happened a day after a Boeing 737 aircraft belonging to Air Peace on Monday suffered a burst tyre while preparing for take-off at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

The incident occurred at about 11a.m. forcing the pilot to abort the flight.

PDP Crisis: Makarfi will lose at Supreme Court, North will break in 2019 – Primate Ayodele prophesies

PDP Crisis: Makarfi will lose at Supreme Court, North will break in 2019 – Primate Ayodele prophesies

Founder and General Overseer of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Babatunde Elijah Ayodele, has predicted that ousted Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ahmed Makarfi will not get justice at the Supreme Court.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Ayodele’s prophecy is coming at the heels of Makarfi’s decision to challenge the Port Harcourt Appeal Court ruling  which affirmed former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic Chairman of the party.

Addressing journalists, the INRI founder also alleged that the seat of the Presidency is cursed, adding that the curse started since the era of Tafawa Balewa.

The clergyman warned that if the curse is not reversed, more misfortunes will befall anyone who occupies the seat.

Ayodele predicted the return of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar back to the fold of the PDP.

He said, “The Lord told me that there is a need to act on the presidency because, like I told you some months ago, there is a curse on the seat of the president since the time of Tafawa Balewa, and if this is not reversed, there is no one who will not have one misfortune or another. The people in power should take note.

“Fridays and Sundays should be dedicated to prayers for the Villa and this is the role of all religious leaders in the country.

“2019 will break northern Nigeria and the All Progressives Congress. Makarfi will not get justice at the Supreme Court while Atiku will return to the PDP and most of the people there who want to contest will not get a ticket. The former vice president may not achieve his mission there because Sheriff has a mission.

“I see a new party, a kind of strong alliance is coming; it is neither PDP nor APC.”

A woman has pleaded guilty and begged for forgiveness after she admitted to severing her husband's manhood while he was sleeping.

The woman identified as Angel Mutuku was charged before a Mombasa court on Monday, where she admitted causing bodily harm contrary to section 251 of the penal code. The prosecution revealed that Mutuku assaulted her husband Stephen Ochieng Oyuga in Magongo area of Kenya on February 16, according to Nairobi Wire.

Mr. Oyuga is currently admitted at Bomu Medical Centre, where he is receiving treatment. According to Changamwe police statement, trouble started at 5:30 am, when the wife slapped her husband in the back, accusing him of sleeping for too long.

“The complaint was asleep at around 05:30 hrs when his wife slapped him on the back and started accusing him of sleeping for too long,” reads the police statement in part.

The angry husband reiterated by slapping her back, for ‘waking him roughly’.

Ms Mutuku then went to the kitchen and came back with a small kitchen knife which she used to commit the deed. She then left the house for her place of work, leaving her husband writhing in pain.

According to the report, she also called Oyuga’s brother to take him to hospital.

The trial magistrate directed that she be detained until Wednesday when prosecution is expected to read facts of the case and possibly prefer fresh charges against her.

Buhari will be back in 3 months; I have names of next Nigeria’s Presidents – Primate Ayodele

Founder and General Overseer of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Babatunde Elijah Ayodele, said he has been shown by God where the next President of the country will come from, adding that they are neither from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, nor the All Progressives Congress, APC.

He added that President Muhammadu Buhari will return in 2 to three months but that his return will not make any difference as the country, according to him, will continue to shake.

The Prophet said Buhari’s health condition will not allow him do anything reasonable for Nigeria, adding that if Buhari dies, Nigeria’s democracy will face serious threat.

Primate Ayodele told reporters yesterday, “As a Christian, I am taking the prayer for President Buhari’s health to the Sultan’s palace in Sokoto because his death will cause troubles to Nigeria’s democracy.

“When the president returns, his government will continue to fluctuate, this is almost certain. Buhari has a good vision for this country, but his health condition is his bane.

“He will be back in approximately three months.

“At the moment, Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo is doing really well and can do better but will have a lot of challenges because there will be a lot of political games that will be played with the position. The right people to do it will be held to ransom.

“Right now, the Lord has given me some names of people that will take Nigeria forward, but I am not revealing them just yet. Those jostling now are not even part of them. Let us pray that we do not disintegrate as a nation.

“The Lord told me that there is a need to act on the presidency because, like I told you some months ago, there is a curse on the seat of the president since the time of Tafawa Balewa, and if this is not reversed, there is no one who will not have one misfortune or another. MMM: UNIOSUN to expel 4,000 students for investing in Ponzi scheme

MMM: UNIOSUN to expel 4,000 students for investing in Ponzi scheme

Management of the University of Osun, UNIOSUN, has threatened to expel over 4,000 students for allegedly using their school fees to “invest” in popular Ponzi scheme, Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox, MMM and other purpose.

A statement issued by the acting registrar of the institution, Gafar Shitu disclosed that the affected students are owing fees amounting to over N2bn.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

According to the statement, “Over 4000 students of Osun State University may lose their studentship for failing to pay their school fees before the expiration of February 28, 2017, deadline set by the university management.

“No fewer than 400 parents/guardians of the defaulting students have called the University help lines to report that they had long given money to their children/wards.

“The university Senate at its meeting of January 26, 2017, after observing that a large number of students had refused to turn up in spite of ceaseless appeals, decided that the students’ portal be reopened longer into the 12th week of resumption against the four weeks stipulated in the University regulations.

“The decision of the University Senate, which was adequately communicated to all the students on February 2, 2017, was to afford more students the opportunity to pay their fees with effect from 17th to 24th February 2017, a date which was later extended until February 28, 2017.

“On 16 February 2017, some students embarked on a protest against the enforcement of extant rules and regulations regarding fee payment and registration.

“Investigations show that over 90 percent of the protesters had not registered for between two and 11 semesters, and were thus using the stipulated late registration penalty of N10, 000 as a smokescreen for their years of defaulting in fee payment and registration.”

Benue, Cross River top list of commercial sex workers in Abuja

Acting true to the warning by the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, the Social Development Secretariat (SDS) swooped on some flash points and joints recently and effected the arrest of 55 suspected commercial sex workers.

A breakdown of those arrested shows that out of the 55, Benue State topped the list with 18, while Cross River came second with 13 followed by Nasarawa and Kaduna states which recorded eight each.

Our correspondent gathered that the operation which was carried out between the hours of 1.00 am to 5.00 am recently.

Speaking to our correspondent on the development, the Acting Secretary of Social Development Secretariat (SDS), Mrs. Adebola Elegbede decried the high rate of commercial sex workers in the Federal Capital Territory, stressing that there is no wonder FCT is rated highest in Nigeria with HIV/AIDs prevalence.

Elegbede who called on women of easy virtue to engage themselves in meaningful ventures also used the occasion to pledge the readiness of the FCT Administration to train repentant commercial sex workers in various entrepreneurial skills.

She, however, warned that a mobile court has been set up to prosecute those who are not willing to change from their old habit, just as she called on the men folk to stop patronising commercial sex workers in their own interest.

She said the raid were carried out around Mabushi, Garki and Wuse 11 where 55 suspected commercial sex workers were arrested. She also said that they hae been handed over to the mobile courts for trial.

Elegbede, however, expressed regret that some residents under the guise of human rights activists are supporting the nefarious activities of commercial sex workers in the FCT.

One of the suspected commercial sex workers who volunteered her name as Alice Ajon claimed that she was driven by the current economic reality to engage in prostitution, adding that she was a staff of one of the hospitality outlets in Abuja before her sudden retrenchment.

Another who refused to disclose her name claimed that she is a victim of circumstance, adding that she was stranded at one of the bus stops in Wuse 11 when the team accosted her.

Nigerian politicians fond of fighting to win election – Nnamani

Nigerian politicians fond of fighting to win election – Nnamani

The chairman, Presidential Committee on Constitution and Electoral Reform, Senator Ken Nnamani has stated that most Nigerian politicians are fond of fighting to win elections.

According to him, elections in the country had become a do or die affair that once a candidate loses, he must head for court.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

He said the ongoing reforms in the electoral system would ensure that winners of elections don’t assume office until petitions against them were determined.

Speaking in Enugu, during a public hearing, Nnamani noted that the measure would discourage attempts by politicians to win at all costs.

“We want to come up with a new system whereby no one can be sworn into office if there are election petitions hanging on his neck.

“Politicians are fond of fighting to win and saying, ‘let us go to court,” he said.

The former Senate President said it was sad that prosecution of election cases had become costlier than campaigns.

“Experience has shown that majority of the cases in our courts are either pre-election or post-election matters and we want to find a way out of this,” he said.

He said ‎the prevailing circumstances, where elections were won in courtrooms was discouraging.

“We want to ensure that, after a candidate has spent time to campaign and is given the mandate by the electorate, such mandates will not be dropped at the court, by way of losing the case,” he said.

2019 Presidency: Don’t take Obasanjo serious, he’s looking for ‘relevance’ – Fayose warns Igbos

2019 Presidency: Don’t take Obasanjo serious, he’s looking for ‘relevance’ – Fayose warns Igbos

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has advised people of the South-East against taking serious the words of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s regarding Presidency.

Recall that Obasanjo had recently advocated for an Igbo President in 2019.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Obasanjo had said, “Irrespective of the thinking of the people ahead of 2019, I personally think that South-East should have a go at the Presidency too.”

But Fayose in his reaction said the Ibogun-born politician, who had ruled Nigeria both as a Military Head of State and civilian President was only looking for relevance.

Speaking with The Sun, the fiery governor said, “Do you ever take Obasanjo serious? I don’t take him serious. By his nature, Obasanjo wants relevance at all times. We have worked with him and used to be his foot soldiers. I know him more than anybody in this country.

“He just talks, so that he would remain relevant. Do you see any other former President in the country running his mouth like his? If it is not the fact that he has a voice as a former head of state, where is Obasanjo’s constituency? Who are his followers?

“How many votes can Obasanjo win in his ward? We must say the truth and we must face the truth. Let’s give it to him, as a leader in this country, whoever has governed this country before would remain our leader, but he must equally recall and admit that he is becoming more fairly negative than working towards national building.”

Okogie defends high tuition in faith-based varsities

The Archbishop Emeritus of Lagos, Cardinal Anthony Okogie, has given reasons why tuition fees in faith-based universities are higher than those of public institutions in Nigeria.

Okogie was reacting to claims that fees charged by faith based varsities were not affordable to most Nigerians.

The cleric spoke during the second matriculation ceremony of the Augustine University in Ilara, Lagos State.

He explained that the current economic situation in the country created more challenges for private varsities.

According to him, the desire of faith-based universities to provide quality education requires a lot of funds.

He said, “Education is not too costly in faith-based institutions. Tell me what is cheap in the country now?  Education is not cheap anywhere in the world.”

The guest speaker at the event, Prof. Joseph Omoregbe, noted that partial education was harmful to the individual and the society.

The retired professor of philosophy at the University of Lagos spoke on the topic, “Educating the human person –A conceptual analysis.” He said, “Education is the development of the three faculties of an individual. They include the intellect, the memory and the will.

A holistic education process must aim at developing these three faculties in order to make an individual an educated, morally upright person.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof.  Steve Afolami, urged the Federal Government to extend scholarship from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to private and faith-based varsities. This, he said, would be helpful, even if the private institutions would have to compete for it.

I’m still Assemblies of God General Superintendent – Paul Emeka

I’m still Assemblies of God General Superintendent – Paul Emeka

A new chapter has opened on the three-year-old crisis rocking the Assemblies of God Nigeria as Rev. Prof. Paul Emeka has declared that he remains the ‘authentic General Superintendent’ of the church.

The media was awash with reports last week that the Supreme Court had ratified his suspension by the General Executive Committee of the Church.

However, he declared on Monday that no judgment of the Supreme Court removed him from
office.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

He said: “There is no judgement of the Supreme court that removed me as the General Superintendent of the church. The reports being paraded is part of the effort by the traducers to take the church by all means and that is why, as the judgment of the court was being delivered, they were already planting stories and dragging the church property.

“The judgment of the Supreme Court has never said I am not the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Nigeria and it has not said my opponent Chidi, is the General Superintendent. That t was not the issue.

“What we are fighting for is not for me to regain my position. What we are fighting for is part of the church they took by force, the property of the church they took by force. But you see they now went further to start encroaching on my position”.

Given further clarification on the judgment which was struck out by the court, Emeka said he had gone to the apex court to challenge to decision of the Court of Appeal which had earlier nullified the ruling of the Enugu High Court, which in 2014 restored him to office as the General Superintendent of the church.

“However, instead of going into the merit of the matter, the Supreme Court had last Friday, struck it out on the ground that the service of the court process on Chidi was not properly done in accordance with the order of the High Court; that the procedure adopted in filing the case was not the appropriate procedure.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

“When a case is struck out, they are telling you to go back and re-file, put it properly and normal procedure. We are going back to the High Court. The case was not dismissed. The issue of removal of Emeka has not been decided.

The court has not heard it. When they heard at the High court, the court gave judgment and the other party appealed not against the decision of the high court, they appealed on ground of procedure that they were not served. There is no order of court anywhere announcing a new General Superintendent for the church”, he stated.

He stated that it was wrong for the faction opposed to his leadership of the church to start taking laws into their hands by “attempting to seize property and claims of legitimacy”.

Emeka stated that the ruling of the apex Court had amounted to the
partial culmination of the three years old crisis, stressing that at least it agreed that he had the right to appeal his “kangaroo suspension as well as the unjust gathering where the action was taken without giving him fair hearing.”

On the sealing of the national secretariat of the church, he said it was part of the effort by the police to ensure there was no break in law and order, alleging that some members loyal to his opponent had attempted to possess forceful the place.

He appealed to his members to remain calm, assuring that the matter would soon be sorted out as he was heading to the High Court to refile the matter.

Ogbeh, who was reacting to issues and questions on herdsmen attacks raised at the a Federal Government organized Town Hall meeting in Umuahia, said “I sincerely apologize to those whose crops were destroyed by the herdsmen.

In a few months you will see the result”. Earlier, the Minister expressed disappointment that successive Abia State Governments allowed the legacy of late Dr. Michael Okpara, former Premiere of Eastern Nigeria built in the area of agriculture, particularly palm produce, to fade away.

Other ministers who spoke at the meeting anchored by Information Minister, Lai Mohammed, include Labour and Productivity Minister, Dr. Chris Ngige; Investment Minister, Okechukwu Enelama, and Minister of State, Solid Minerals, Alhaji Abubakar Buhari Bawa.

Ngige in his contribution said that the Buhari administration had not abandoned the zone and named many dilapidated Federal roads where intensive works were going on even as he urged Governor Ikpeazu to do Federal roads in his State and tender bills for refund, insisting that the Federal would refund such money if the job was well done.

The above was a quote credited to a governor over various crises plaguing the party and plot to form a new party as battered image of the People Democratic Party, PDP no longer a haven as 2019 draws nearer.

According to New Telegraph, governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have concluded plans to dump the party and float a new political party, irrespective of the outcome of the appeal filed by the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee, before the Supreme Court.

The caretaker committee had, last week, filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the ruling of the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt division, which reinstated Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as National Chairman.

PDP governors are on the side of Makarfi in the leadership crisis that has factionalised the party since the May 21, 2016 National Convention.

Seven out of the 10 PDP governors are in their first term in office. A highly placed member of the party confided in New Telegraph that none of the governors would like to seek second term in office on the platform of the party.

“PDP is associated with corruption and most of the party members are no longer comfortable with the name. Discussions have reached an advanced level, even before the Court of Appeal judgement, to float an entirely new political party,” one of the governors told New Telegraph at the weekend.

Adopting a new name for the party had generated heated debates at the several sittings of the Professor Jerry Gana-led Strategy Review and Interparty Affairs Committee empanelled by the National Caretaker Committee.

A member of the 115-member committee disclosed that: “Some people say PDP’s name is so bad that we can’t win elections, that the name should be changed. But the consensus is that we should retain that name.

It is the general opinion that the name remains solid even under APC.” The committee, according to the member, recommended only a slight change in the party’s slogan while the name is still retained.

Another member of the committee also revealed that formation of a new party is an option if the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government continues to frustrate the PDP’s revival through the courts.

The report of the committee was yet to be submitted to the organs of the party to make their own inputs before the February 17 Court of Appeal judgement, which reinstated Sheriff as PDP National Chairman.

According to the governor, none of the PDP governors was planning to defect to APC as was being speculated. Rather, he said, they were unanimous in floating a new political party and impose it on the PDP structure, as a platform to contest the 2019 general elections.

“We are aware of the antics of APC and we do not want it to continue to hold us down. We are working towards forming a new party; we have been discussing that.

“Nigerians don’t want to hear the PDP name again, and we don’t want to go into an election with a party that has bad image,” he added.
Another governor told New Telegraph that the option before the party is to either float entirely new political party or take over the existing one and change its name.

“If Makarfi wins at the Supreme Court, we will still rebrand the PDP. But in the event he loses, it makes the job much easier.

We are considering the option of floating a new party or take over one of the fringe parties,” the governor said.

Even Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose spoke confidently that the platform he would use to prosecute the 2018 governorship election would not be a problem, in the event that the PDP structure continues to remain with Sheriff. “On the issue of platform, be assured that nothing will go wrong. Don’t worry about me.

The election is just 20 months away, let us keep our fingers crossed. Be assured that my election is an election that heaven is celebrating already,” Fayose said immediately after the Court of Appeal judgement.

Fayose had said immediately after the Ondo State governorship election last year that he was considering prosecuting the 2018 Ekiti State governorship election on a different platform. “Sheriff and his faction had worked against PDP in Edo and Ondo states.

He disgraced the former Ondo State governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and ensured that the person he chose as his successor, Hon. Eyitayo Jegede, lost to the APC candidate,” the Ekiti helmsman said.
After Mimiko, the next target is believed to be Fayose, who is one of the governors who are against him.

The former Borno State governor had claimed that some of the PDP governors are with him, but former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Abdullahi Jalo, said none of the governors is with him.

Jalo said there are several options before the PDP under Makarfi, which, he said includes formation of a new party.

“If we are moving, we are moving en masse,” he said. “PDP is aware that APC will block any move by its members to register a new political party, hence the plan to use pseudonym and then tell its members to join.

That is only if the appeal before the Supreme Court fails. “But in the event that the appeal succeeds, the party will apply to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a change of name,” the source disclosed.

However, spokesperson for the caretaker committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said there is no such plan to form another political party.
“There is nothing like that. Everybody is talking about it, but that is not the situation. What I can tell you is that we don’t have such plan to form any party,” Adeyeye told New Telegraph.

When asked what option is left for the party if the appeal fails at the Supreme Court, he answered: “Let’s wait for the appeal; we will cross the bridge when we get there.”
