China deports U.S. citizen convicted of espionage

China deports U.S. citizen convicted of espionage

China has deported a U.S. citizen who was convicted of espionage after being held without trial for two years, removing a source of friction between Washington and Beijing.

Sandy Phan-Gillis was arrested in March 2015 while about to leave mainland China for the Chinese-ruled, former Portuguese colony of Macau.

A court on Tuesday ordered her deportation after sentencing her to three-and-a-half years in prison for espionage.

She left China on Friday from the southern city of Guangzhou and arrived in Los Angeles on the same day, her husband said in a statement.

The Chinese government has not released details of the charges against Phan-Gillis.

Her lawyer said he could not reveal details of the case because it involved “state secrets”.

Her husband, Jeff Gillis, said China had accused Phan-Gillis of visiting the country twice on spy missions in 1996.

She was also accused of working with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to capture two Chinese spies in the U.S. and turn them into double agents.

The deportation came at a time of waning China-U.S. relations after U.S. President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Florida in early April.

In an interview Trump had called Xi a “good man” and praised him for his efforts to press North Korea to give up its development of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.

Negotiations to secure the release of Phan-Gillis intensified when Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited Beijing in March, according to the San Francisco-based Dui Hua Foundation.

“Sandy is overjoyed to be reunited with friends and family, and sends out her thanks to the many people who worked tirelessly for her release,” Gillis said (Reuters/NAN)

JUST IN: Fresh Revelation On Ikoyi Misery N15b EXPOSED, Buhari's NSA Involvement, How NIA Boss Tried To Play Smart

JUST IN: Fresh Revelation On Ikoyi Misery N15b EXPOSED, Buhari's NSA Involvement, How NIA Boss Tried To Play Smart

Fresh Revelation On Ikoyi N15b EXPOSED, Buhari's NSA Involvement

The Presidency has debunked the claim by the suspended Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ayo Oke, that the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, was aware of the N43.4m stashed away at a private apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos.

A government official told journalists on Saturday that in the first instance, "Oke did not brief the NSA at all about the existence of such funds-$289M- or the projects they were meant for when the Buhari administration took office in May 2015, even though the money had been released in March the same year.

The official stated: 'The NSA office only got its first knowledge of the existence of such funds during the work of the presidential committee that audited the Defense Equipment Procurement in the Armed Forces. The Committee had observed certain payments from the CBN to the NIA and raised questions drawing the attention of the NSA.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

'When the suspended DG of the NIA discovered that that Committee was raising questions and to forestall the NSA from "blowing the cover," he then gave his first report to the NSA on the existence of such funds and warned that the Committee's job does not cover the activities or the spendings of the NIA.

"The Presidential Committee on Audit of Defense Equipment Procurement, in the course of its assignment came across information that the NIA received a huge sum of money in early 2015 from the former President.

Based on this the NSA carried out a preliminary investigation during which the NIA claimed the money was released for some projects aimed at commencing the Agency's 30th anniversary. This was in January 2017."

'Subsequently, a team was constituted" to ascertain the situation. The first suspicion of a potential abuse was noticed at this stage, according to sources, especially considering the amount of money involved and the purposes stated.

"This was how the NSA and the Presidency learnt of the existence of such funds. We were not told by anyone in NIA until the Committee saw something, and raised a red flag.

However, when the embattled NIA top spy was now compelled to explain what was happening, "he still did not inform anyone in the Federal Government or presidency that he kept $43m of the said funds in cash at a private apartment anywhere in Lagos or any part of the country."

"This is the issue: the NSA was not told that NIA had this lump cash stashed away in the place it was eventually discovered by EFCC. In any case, extant rules are clear that such monies ought only to be placed in the NIA headquarters or in CBN vaults.

'There are also instances where CBN actually paid out some of the funds directly to some NIA contractors, raising questions why the suspended NIA needed to put aside such huge cash in a private apartment.

'The projects for which the former President approved the funds totaling $289m included two in Lagos whose cost were put at about $28m, which is way less than the $43m cash found in the Ikoyi apartment.

Sources explained further that as at January this year, funds for the Lagos projects had actually been released to the tune of $18m, meaning only about $10m was left to be paid four months ago, before $43m was found in the Lagos apartment recently.

"So let us even assume that the NIA DG wanted to keep funds in Lagos for the Lagos based projects, he did not need that much for the total of the Lagos projects at all.

And apart from that it is completely untenable to stash away agency money in a private apartment instead of keeping it with the CBN or inside the NIA head office where the money would be well-secured and its disbursement well protected. "

IG of Police wants to kill me – Wike

IG of Police wants to kill me – Wike

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has claimed that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, is after his life.

Wike stated this while speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Saturday.

The Governor said that the IG of Police, directed his crack team to invade his house in Asokoro, Abuja on Friday, supposedly acting on information from a whistle-blower.

“I want to reiterate, the Inspector-General of Police is after my life,” he said.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Wike said the raid was a plot, to plant firearms, cash and other incriminating exhibits in his Abuja home.

“All attempts are being made so that they will go and plant either AK-47 or $1m in the governor’s house. They can even plant costly wrist watches as a propaganda tool.

“I said I have to let Nigerians know that this is not the way to go about in a democracy. Rather, this is an attempt to truncate democracy. That someone differs on issues does not mean you have to go after the person’s life,” he added.

Wike also dared the police to come to his home in Rivers to conduct their search, instead of his Abuja residence.

“Nigerians should be aware that should they raid my house in Abuja and claim they found anything, it is incorrect.

“I have not been going to Abuja, but I will be in Abuja to wait for them to see how they plan to plant guns in my house,” Wike said.

My Thoughts on Nigeria – Osita Chidoka

My Thoughts on Nigeria – Osita Chidoka

At independence, our leaders failed to define the qualities of an exceptional country so diverse yet so similar that other African countries can discern a Nigerian no matter the ethnic origin.

The emphasis was on replacing the colonial masters and enjoying the benefits of a distributional and extractive governance philosophy primarily designed to enrich the home government of the colonialist.

In adopting that philosophy without the administrative competence of the colonial administration, it was only a matter of time before the vacuous organizing principle of the new state led to Africa’s worst pogrom and civil war.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

The end of the civil war offered an opportunity for the winning coalition to redefine the organizing principle of the Nigerian state and propose new ideals upon which, a state exceptional in its combination of three strong and many other small ethnic groups that had overcome a civil war, can be founded.

Yet again we missed it. Administration after Administration we have failed to build a modern Nigeria based on ideals that derive from our essence and quest for nationhood.

Today, confronted by a dire economic situation; antagonised by separatist agitations and religion inspired terror; and challenged by weakening subnational governments and global hostility another opportunity presents itself to redefine the essence of the Nigerian State.

This redefinition is not all about restructuring (if we can agree on the definition) but may include it, it is not all about governance structure and distributional formula, though it may be an aftermath, it is principally about a union freely founded on ideals of respect for individual rights, freedom to achieve individual potential and respect for multi-cultural, multi-ethnic union that allows for unity in diversity indeed.

The Nigerian state so redefined and freely subscribed to by a majority would definitely endure and overcome all the challenges that plague any nation so constructed.

PDP crisis: Makarfi, others should form another party – Maidugu

PDP crisis: Makarfi, others should form another party – Maidugu

Barr. Bashir Maidugu, National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has admonished Senator Ahmed Makarfi, and others fighting the national chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, to form another party.

He said this in reaction to demand that since Sheriff seemed to be at loggerheads with some top party members, including governors, he should leave the party and form another platform.

Reacting, Maidugu said nothing like that will happen.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

“He should leave the PDP when he’s the national chairman declared by the Court of Appeal? How can he leave the PDP?

“Those who do not want him should go and form another party, we don’t have any problem with that. We’re right now operating from Wadata Plaza (party national headquarters),” he told Daily Trust.

Asked if Sheriff really meant well for the PDP, the legal practitioner said the former governor or Borno State wouldn’t have accepted the Governor Seriake Dickson’s report if he was working against the party.

“It is those who do not mean well for the PDP that are trying to sabotage the Appeal Court judgement. They are trying to sabotage our judiciary and think they own it.

“They went to the Supreme Court and keep telling people that they are going to get judgement there as if the Supreme Court is their house boy or it belongs to them. No, it is the Supreme Court of Nigeria”, he said.

Before Another Yar’Adua Happens

Before Another Yar’Adua Happens

At 74 Muhammadu Buhari is the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces. He came to power in May 2015 after winning a landmark presidential poll of the same year. He was subsequently sworn into office on the 29th May.

After three failed attempts to democratically capture power at the apex he finally made it to Aso Rock Villa through the opposition All Progressives Congress in a blaze of glory.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Nigeria then needed desperately a change at the centre and Nigerians wanted same given the rampaging uncontrollable corruption and the growing insurgency in the north-east spearheaded by Boko Haram.

Millions of Nigerians felt that a Buhari presidency would stabilise the polity and win the war against both corruption and Boko Haram. Today, two years on, very few are disappointed with Buhari as he has done very well fighting the two monsters.

Buhari, from all indications, is a good man, a man of honour and high integrity. His credibility has never waned over the years. He is patriotic, determined and hard-working.

And he genuinely wanted to reposition Nigeria for the greatness that has eluded her for decades. His quest for accountability in our public affairs and his drive for a better economic environment that attracts foreign investments are areas of note.

While the nation could be said to be experiencing certain economic challenges leading to recession no one doubts his desire to make things better. He may not be an economist but assembling a good economic team could help in tackling the economic worries of the average Nigerians.

A strong man of strong vision and strong will, Buhari came into office at a terrible time in our national history when Boko Haram terrorists up north were busy seizing villages and towns and openly challenging Abuja for a fight!

At a challenging moment in time when corruption had almost ‘killed’ the Nigerian dream under the defeated ex-President Goodluck Jonathan. The war against the Islamist militia has paid dividends as Shekau and his drugged boys had beaten a hasty retreat.

Besides, the war against corruption has netted in billions of Naira and millions of Dollars taking in rogues and leading to a better/safer economic atmosphere.

Buhari may be old but not too old to preside over our national affairs. After all, he is not the oldest Head of State in Africa where you have the likes of Obiang Mbasogo, Yoweri Museveni, Alassane Ouattara, Alpha Conde and Robert Mugabe still leading their respective countries.

But there are real and imaginary anxieties over the state of health of the Nigerian leader.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

After staying in London for close to two months recently for health reasons Buhari seems to be embattled health-wise. And he is not communicating enough with Nigerians over this matter. His handlers are not doing better either!

When Buhari (ably assisted by the late Gen. Tunde Idiagbon) first came to power via a popular putsch in late December 1983 I was still in the primary school in the village somewhere in Ihiala town in Anambra state — barely ten years old!

As one of the Buharists in the Diaspora, our rigid belief in the capacity of the Daura-born retired General to deliver has never wavered even when he was still in the opposition wilderness.

We are not withdrawing this support for whatever reason — his martial antecedents notwithstanding. A former benevolent dictator could be a repentant democrat!

Like many Buharists everywhere I was seriously concerned when I recently read a report online that was as troubling as it was pitiful.

A notable columnist and convener of Every Nigerian Do Something (ENDS), Dr Perry Brimah, has raised the alarm over President Buhari’s health status and described him as “no more than skin and bone” and “dying” inside the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Declaring that Buhari is “chronically ill” and in need of urgent rest and medication, Brimah decried what he termed “the wickedness of the selfish cabal that forces him (Buhari) to remain locked up, ‘dying’ in Aso Rock instead of receiving best therapy”.

In a statement, he had issued he contended that: “there can be no denying how chronically ill President Buhari looks when he seldom does appear in public. The last time was last week Friday when Kaduna state governor Nasir el-Rufai came visiting….the videos of Buhari walking for Friday prayers bring tears to eyes.

His asthenic figure now no more than skin-and-bones as he sat down for the Jummah service was heart-wrenching….how can a people be so cold they expose a grandfather to this type of extreme stress and deprive him of his needed rest and medical expert attention by tasking him to lead the world’s most complex nation?”

The Convener of ENDS continued: “Have we as a people lost our humanity that we continue to task Buhari like this and not campaign for him to be relieved of our burden and rest towards recovery?

…It is insane to continue to deprive him and the nation by locking him up and burdening him with a challenge too heavy for even a strong young man to bear talk-less an old man who just returned from a 49-day leave in which he received blood transfusions and unknown cocktails of serious medications…

For those of us in the medical profession, we recognise the President’s loss of hair on his head and facial hair as well as his reported blood transfusions as possible evidence of cancer chemotherapy.”

While condemning the cabal hiding Buhari from the people, the wickedness of the selfish cabal that forces him to remain locked up, ‘dying’ in Aso Rock instead of receiving best therapy he concluded that “It’s time for Nigerians to demand full disclosure of the true state of health of President Buhari and immediate best options for him to be allowed to rest and recover instead of being locked up to literally die under the weight of Nigeria”.

Of course, the declaration of Dr Brimah is a true affirmation against the backdrop of the last rare image of the President attending the Friday prayers in the mosque in the Villa. The picture delivered an incontrovertible message of a dying leader whose fate is found more in the hands of Almighty Allah.

President Buhari was looking gaunt, emaciated; very much like a Somalian victim of famine or war! A President of the richest nation in Africa, a nation of the richest black man in the world looking like that is shameful and disgraceful.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Though he has never been on the fat side but we have seen a better slim radiant President, tall in his nature and gracious in his septuagenarian status. Today he looks beaten by the sickness that is ravaging his system.

And for reporting the generalised anxiety trailing Buhari’s indisposition in his widely-read national newspaper the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the President, Bashir Abubakar, had had The PUNCH State House correspondent, Olalekan Adetayo, expelled from the Villa.

Bashir Abubakar may be aspiring to be another Major Hamza Al-Mustapha during the late Gen. Abacha’s tyranny but he must be educated that what he did unilaterally amounted to a gross abuse of power and grievous attempt to stifle the freedom of speech and expression which the constitution guarantees. It is never the duty of the CSO to ‘arrest’, prosecute or judge journalists no matter their professional ‘offence’.

Abubakar must be sanctioned or sacked outright to demonstrate that he had usurped power and over-reached himself. He cannot claim to love Buhari more than the rest of us do! He cannot play God by wishing the President’s condition away! Nigerians deserve to know why Mr President is incommunicado and confined to his bedroom for weeks running!

Nigeria has had a recent history of presidential infirmity and even mortality. During the years of the Locust of the late ‘Khalifa’ from Kano Nigerians were kept in the dark as to what kept Sani Abacha indoors — delegating power and authority to killers like Al-Mustapha and Sergent Rogers.

We were ‘delivered’ when an Indian imported prostitute fed Abacha his last apple here on earth! The crude dictator was taken out and the liberated nation heaved a sigh of collective relief upon his committal to mother earth!

The only difference one could cite here is that Abacha was never elected by anyone, so demanding for accountability or probity was almost a taboo!

And just less than a decade ago we lost another sitting President to a debilitating ailment. The late President Umaru Yar’Adua was nursing a terminal ailment which was carefully concealed. But when he succumbed to the grim reaper we discovered that the Katsina former Governor and university lecturer had been suffering from the incurable Churg-Stauss Syndrome!

A cabal led by his wife, Turai, had done everything within its power to mask the President’s condition until the ultimate leveller brought the inconvenient truth to the public domain. When Yar’Adua died the nation was thrown into a political uncertainty which took the time to resolve constitutionally.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Before another Yar’Adua happens before our very eyes, therefore, necessitating another “doctrine of necessity” we hold that the President must be patriotic and democratic enough to know when the time is up. And the alleged cabal holding him hostage apparently and shielding him from the public view should do the needful by releasing their ‘executive captive’.

Of course, the nation cannot afford yet another acrimonious divisive political consequences akin to the Yar’Adua scenario. While we sincerely wish the President prompt recuperation from whatever malaise ailing him we make bold to declare unequivocally that throwing in the towel appears to be the right thing to do under the present destabilising circumstances.

There is, indeed, life after power! Ruling Nigeria by proxy and failing to attend weekly FEC meetings are signs of how things have degenerated. It cannot be considered a mark of statesmanship for a leader to want to die in office.

Playing Museveni, Mbasogo or Mugabe (despite the ubiquitous politico-economic muddle) is a demonstration of insensitivity; of political weakness and not strength.

Mr President, resignation, in our reckoning, remains a better option faced with the current speculations arising from the grave illness afflicting you whose state or condition we know not. Declare yourself incapacitated, Buhari, and quietly retire. Tomorrow may be too late to contemplate this honourable exit.

Unbelievable! Man Reportedly Kicked Off Flight for Needing to Use the Toilet

Unbelievable! Man Reportedly Kicked Off Flight for Needing to Use the Toilet

An airline has attracted controversy to itself after it picked one of the most unreasonable reasons to kick a passenger out of it's plane.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

A man trying to get home to see his wife and kids has been kicked off a plane after urgently needing to use the bathroom.

Kimi Hamilton was travelling from Atlanta to Milwaukee on a Delta Air Lines plane when he urgently needed to use the toilet as take-off proceedings were underway.

In fellow passenger Krista Rosolino's view, Hamilton's removal from the April 18 flight was an outrage and so was everyone else's forced exit from the plane when it returned to the gate in Atlanta. She took to social media to defend a man she didn't know.

The Delta Air Lines quick-take on this incident is that federal law requires passengers to comply with crew instructions or run the risk of being seen as a security threat.

"Our flight crews are extensively trained to ensure the safety and security of all customers," Delta said Wednesday in a statement. "It is imperative that passengers comply with crew instructions during all phases of flight, especially at the critical points of takeoff and landing."

It is the latest in a number of airplane incidents which have occurred in recent weeks.

Jonathan: There are false reports out there, I’ll soon give the true account of 2015 poll

Jonathan: There are false reports out there, I’ll soon give the true account of 2015 poll

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says he will give a personal account of what happened in the 2015 presidential election soon.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Jonathan said this in a series of tweets on Saturday.

In ‘Against the Run of Play’, a book which chronicles how Jonathan lost the 2015 election, written by Segun Adeniyi, the former president blamed former US President Barack Obama for his electoral defeat.

But in the book,  some of the former president’s allies such as David Mark, former senate president, and Babangida Aliyu, former Niger state governor, put the blame for his loss on him and his wife, Patience.

However, Jonathan said the accounts of what transpired in the election by some respondents in the book were false.

Below are his tweets.

(1) I have just read Segun Adeniyi’s new book, ‘Against the Run of Play’ which has so far enjoyed tremendous reviews in the media.

— Goodluck E. Jonathan (@GEJonathan) April 29, 2017

(2) My take on it is that the book as presented contains many distorted claims on the 2015 Presidential election by many of the respondents

— Goodluck E. Jonathan (@GEJonathan) April 29, 2017

(3) There will obviously be more books like that on this subject by concerned Nigerians.

— Goodluck E. Jonathan (@GEJonathan) April 29, 2017

(4) However, I believe that at the right time, the main characters in the elections including myself

— Goodluck E. Jonathan (@GEJonathan) April 29, 2017

(5) will come out with a true account of what transpired either in major interviews or books.

— Goodluck E. Jonathan (@GEJonathan) April 29, 2017

Why President Buhari Must Resign Now - Shehu Sani Blows Hot

Why President Buhari Must Resign Now - Shehu Sani Blows Hot

President Muhammadu Buhari

A top Nigerian politician has joined several Nigerians to call on president Muhammadu Buhari to resign from his exalted position.

Abdulmumini Shehu Sani, the Chairman of the Katsina State Chapter of National Conscience Party, NCP, and a resident of Katsina State has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign and attend to his health issues.

Speaking in the state, Sani said Buhari cannot hold Nigerians to ransom with his health condition as there were other people better positioned to lead Nigeria.

He noted that those playing with the health condition of the President were only bent on destroying the nation and the President himself.

According to Sani, “In whatever situation of life, health matters and you cannot lead without proper health. You cannot be a dictator or mentor without proper and adequate health. And you cannot think and do the right thing without health.

“Let’s look at Nigeria as a whole that comprises over 180 million people, inasmuch as the leader (Buhari) is incapable based on his health status, let us follow the rule of law constitutionally for him to resign.

“His incapacitation cannot take us anywhere. It is better for him to resign. I can call him my father because he was a school mate to my late father, Shehu Sani, at the Government College, Katsina. But the truth is the Nigerian constitution should not be manipulated to favour one person.

“If we want to be fair to ourselves, he should resign, he is not the only one that can lead Nigeria to the right direction. Let him resign and go back to his family so that he can receive proper medications so that he will be free from the burden of tension from Nigerians and recover.”

When asked if he is envious of his former record label mate success, the singer responded that he had always believe that the ‘pana’ crooner will succeed in life.

“I am so happy for Tekno and his success and I am not surprised. At a point, we were all together and this is a young guy that works very hard. He worked every night and when we woke up in the morning, he would still be working.

So, I am not surprised that he has finally made it. I believe this is just the beginning and there are many more things to come his way. When he came to Triple MG, he sprayed his hair gold and anytime I wanted to call him, I referred to him as golden boy. I am very happy he is doing great things.’

How would I be envious of somebody that Ubi Franklin and I raised from our platform? We used our platform to promote him and I cannot be envious of him; there is no need for that. People would always try to say negative things but we are very fine.” he said.

FRSC rescues trafficked children, impounds vehicle

The Federal Road Safety Corps has impounded a vehicle used in child trafficking and rescued 17 of the trafficked children in Kaduna State.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

The operatives were to arrest the vehicle for overloading and broken windscreen, only to discover that the occupants of the vehicle were suspected child traffickers with some 17 minors.

In a statement released by the Corps’ Head Media Relations and Strategy, Mr. Bisi Kazeem, he said the vehicle, a Ford Galaxy model with registration number LMU 76 XA, grey color, was travelling from Kano to an undisclosed location on Thursday, April 27, around 1155hrs, when the patrol team asked the driver of the said vehicle to stop.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

The driver, however, refused to stop, which led to a chase towards Dutsenma junction, where he was forced to as the traffic light turned red. He was arrested, the vehicle impounded and taken to the FRSC base at No 12 Ahmadu Bello Way, Kaduna.

The operatives counted 17 minors and 3 adults (a driver, a woman and one other person), totalling 20 persons in the vehicle. This raised the team lead’s suspicion.

According to the Corps’ Sector Head of Operations in Kaduna who interviewed the driver, he could not convince the officers about their movement and the destination of the children.

Kazeem stated that the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, who got a report on the situation immediately directed that the case be reported to the Comptroller of Immigration, Kaduna State, who immediately deployed his personnel to take away the Vehicle and its occupants for further investigation at their Command.

The matter was subsequently transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for further investigation and necessary action.

To this end, Oyeyemi who approved of the release of the vehicle to NAPTIP to serve as an exhibit on their request, used the opportunity to stress the need for constant inter-agency collaboration to foster security of lives and properties in the Country.

US, UK give conditions for peace over North Korea

US, UK give conditions for peace over North Korea

The US and UK as well as their allies have given conditions for peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict over North Korea’s nuclear threats.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

The two countries gave the conditions at a high-level meeting on North Korea, attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 15-Member UN Security Council on Friday in New York.

This was just as North Korea reportedly launched another missile test on Friday as a Security Council’s meeting chaired by the U.S. got underway at the UN.

The high-level meeting was chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to end the country’s Presidency of the Council for the Month of April 2017.

Tillerson said: “For the past 20 years, well-intentioned diplomatic efforts to halt these programs have failed.

“It is only by first dismantling them that there can be peace, stability, and economic prosperity for all of Northeast Asia.

“With each successive detonation and missile test, North Korea pushes Northeast Asia and the world closer to instability and broader conflict.

“The threat of a North Korean nuclear attack on Seoul, or Tokyo, is real.

“And it is likely only a matter of time before North Korea develops the capability to strike the U.S. mainland.

“Indeed, the DPRK has repeatedly claimed it plans to conduct such a strike.

“Given that rhetoric, the United States cannot idly stand by. Nor can other members of this council who are within striking distance of North Korean missiles”.

The U.S. envoy warned that there was no reason to think that North Korea would change its behaviour under the current multilateral sanctions framework.

“For too long, the international community has been reactive in addressing North Korea. Those days must come to an end.

“Failing to act now on the most pressing security issue in the world may bring catastrophic consequences.

“We have said this before and it bears repeating: the policy of strategic patience is over. Additional patience will only mean acceptance of a nuclear North Korea.

“The more we bid our time, the sooner we will run out of it,” Tillerson warned.

He added: “Lastly, as we have said before, all options for responding to future provocation must remain on the table.

“Diplomatic and financial levers of power will be backed up by a willingness to counteract North Korean aggression with military action if necessary”.

On its part, the UK, through Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, called for a change of approach by the Security Council, towards North Korea.

“This Council must be united in its demand that the present course cannot continue and Britain is proud today to have joined its allies to lead the enforcement of sanctions and seek a peaceful solution.

“We urge other partners with direct influence on North Korea to use their leverage to the full, with the aim of easing tensions and ensuring compliance with the expressed will of the UN.”

The UK called on Russia and China and other Member States to use whatever influence they possess to restrain North Korea and guide its leaders towards a peaceful settlement.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

“Britain stands alongside our allies in making clear that North Korea must obey the UN and halt its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes, disarming in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.

“Only then can this Council be assured of the peace and security of the region – and only then can the people of North Korea have the chance of a better future.

“But the catastrophic effects of a North Korean nuclear strike outweigh any economic benefits.

“We must be willing to face the hard truths and make hard choices right now to prevent disastrous outcomes in the future.

“For years, North Korea has been dictating the terms of its dangerous course of action; it is time for us to retake control of the situation,” Johnson said.

Other members of the Security Council that supported U.S. and UK included Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Italy, Sweden and Ukraine.

What Buhari should learn from Obasanjo — Soyinka

What Buhari should learn from Obasanjo — Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, on Friday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to emulate some of the leadership qualities of one of his predecessors, Olusegun Obasanjo, in tackling the herdsmen menace across the country.

While fielding questions during an open forum he tagged ‘Terms of Enslavement I: Holy Cows, Green Gods, and Law of Karma,’ Mr. Soyinka said Nigerians have been overloaded with problems arising due to leadership deficit.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

“When I talk about the absence of leadership effect, let me give you an instance, when we started the Road Safety (also known as the Federal Road Safety Commission) movement and we began to clash with the military,” said Mr. Soyinka.

“The military at the time were the greatest killers on the road; they killed one another, they killed themselves, they killed civilians, and if you argue with them on the road you were given the ‘mud’ treatment or leap-frogging. And we took them up.”

Mr. Soyinka said the first stream of recruits into the FRSC were those who believed in the philosophy and the purpose of the organization.

“They were taught not to fear any soldier, and they fought the soldiers very often. I have trophies which were seized from soldiers in my house till today,” he said.

“And Obasanjo was the Head of State when Road Safety began on a national scale. We met one day and he said, ‘Hmmm, Wole, I hear you are fighting my men on the road, if they kill you, don’t come and complain o.’

“But he also did something, you know he’s not my favourite person but I always like to give credit where credit is due; Obasanjo also sent notices around to the military and said, ‘We set up, we encouraged, and we are backing this Road safety group…. From now, you fight any Road Safety on the street, when they are done with you, whatever the result is, you then come back and you eat military punishment.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

“And the assault on Road safety – you know there was the volunteer as well as the uniformed – the assault virtually died on the road. Before that, it was a culture of assaults, they so despised the Road Safety…. anybody touching them, stopping them, disciplining them on the road is an anathema.

Obasanjo stopped the assault. Make sure you print that so he can read it and see that I don’t hate him altogether. So that is what is lacking here.

“We have an ex-military leader, all he has to do, at least the first step even before convening any national summit… Pass the word round that any soldier seen molseting a civilian or any herdsman who attacks any civilian will be disciplined in such a way that he will wish he were a farmer.”

UK to Jonathan: We didn’t aid Buhari to defeat you

UK to Jonathan: We didn’t aid Buhari to defeat you

British Government

THE British Government has washed off its hands over allegation by former President Goodluck Jonathan that its former Prime Minister, David Cameron, connived with other world leaders to edge him out office.

Jonathan in a new book launched on Friday, accused Cameron, former United States President, Barak Obama and other world leaders of aiding his rival, Muhammadu Buhari to win the last general election.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

But in a quick reaction, the British Government in a statement issued by its High Commission in Nigeria and signed by the Press and Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Joe Abuku, said that the election was a Nigerian project and that the British Government did not interfere with the polls in any way.

It said, “Prior to the 2015 elections in Nigeria, the UK engaged with Nigerian political parties and their leaders to urge them to run a fair, non violent campaign and allow Nigerian voters to decide who their future political leadership would be.

We congratulated President Jonathan on having handed over power peacefully in 2015 having lost the Nigerian Presidential elections.

“The elections were a credit to the Nigerian people and a truly historic moment for Nigerian democracy. This process further strengthened Nigeria’s democratic tradition.

“The UK welcomes the assessment of independent observers, including the EU, that Nigeria’s elections were largely peaceful and conducted in accordance with recognised international democratic norms, and that there was no evidence of systemic manipulation of the process,” the UK government said.

In a new book presented to the public in Lagos yesterday, former President Goodluck Jonathan said he lost the 2015 elections to local and international conspiracies. He named the United States, Britain, and France as the conspirators.

He blamed it all on former United States President Barack Obama, ex-British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Hollande for aiding President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory.

Dr Jonathan also said he was disappointed by the conduct of the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, in the weeks preceding the elections.

He said he conceded defeat to avoid bloodshed in view of a similar experience after the 2011 poll.

He said: “President Barack Obama and his officials made it very clear to me by their actions that they wanted a change of government in Nigeria and we’re ready to do anything to achieve that purpose. They even brought some naval ships into the Gulf of Guinea in the days preceding the election.

“I got on well with Prime Minister David Cameron but at some point, I noticed that the Americans were putting pressure on him and he had to join them against me. But I didn’t realise how far President Obama was prepared to go to remove me until France caved into the pressure from America.

“But weeks to the election, he had also joined the Americans in supporting the opposition against me.

Asked of Obama’s grouse against him, Jonathan added: “There was this blanket accusation that my body language was supporting corruption, a line invented by the opposition but which the media and civil society bought into and helped to project to the world.

That was the same thing I kept hearing from the Americans without specific allegations.”

Revealed: Inside the Sordid Tale Of Mutual Infidelity and Financial Crisis That Crashed Mercy Aigbe's Marriage

Revealed: Inside the Sordid Tale Of Mutual Infidelity and Financial Crisis That Crashed Mercy Aigbe's Marriage

Mercy Aigbe and Lanre Gentry on their wedding day in 2013.

New details have emerged on the situations that led to the recent crash of Mercy Aigbe's 7-year-old marriage.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Nigerians have been left totally startled by the sudden crash of 38-year-old actress, Mercy Aigbe's marriage to 50-year-old husband, Lanre Gentry.

Drama began when on Friday, April 28, she published a cryptic post on her Instagram page, calling for Nigerians to ‘say no’ to domestic violence.

Observers wondered if she was suffering the same fate as millions of Nigerian women who were stuck in abusive marriages.

About the same time, her hotelier husband, shared a now deleted post that said ‘Say no to promiscuous women.’ It didn’t take long for fans to deduce that something was wrong. By the end of the day, two photos of the actress badly bruised and battered surfaced online.

According to an exclusive report by NET, it has been revealed that the Aigbe-Gentry marriage was a toxic mix of mutual infidelity, lies, and pretence that was eventually broken by a financial crisis that worsened an already bad situation.

A source close to the family (who chose not to be named for obvious reasons) disclosed details of the tempestuous marriage.

‘The marriage was destined to break’, the source said. ‘Mercy Aigbe has been promiscuous all through the marriage and this has caused a strain between them since the beginning.

‘Some of us have always  known that this would happen someday. A married woman cannot be sleeping about like that. A lot of people thought that after she remarried, she would have calmed down.’

When pressed on that point, the source further disclosed that Mercy Aigbe has always maintained amorous relationships with other men for financial favours while she was married to Gentry.

‘Where do you think she gets all her money from, movies? How much do Nigerian actresses make for their movie roles? If you compare it with their luxurious lifestyle, you’ll see that it doesn’t add up.’

‘Let me give you an example: for someone who likes to travel as much as she does, each trip she takes outside the country takes nothing less than N3million. Take a look at her Instagram posts. She always flies business class.

The cheapest amount you can get a business class ticket to Dubai is N900,000. Don’t you see the pictures she posts online? Mr Gentry simply does not have the funds to foot that bill multiple times a year.’

The source went on to say that notable politicians who are said to have Nollywood actresses on their payroll for various sexual adventures have Mercy Aigbe on speed dial. ‘These are the people that help Mercy maintain the facade of being an A-lister’.

However, it is not as if Lanre Gentry himself was a victimised husband who was played by his wife. The self-styled ‘Asiwaju’ has also been a philanderer whose life of indiscretion was well known to his wife.

Even before he got married to Mercy, his penchant for pretty young things was well known and became constant source of worry to his wife. His Oregun hotel, Laveronique was a rendezvous of sorts for his flirtations.

But Mercy, who had once been married and has an 18-year-old daughter from that relationship along with a six-year-old son with Gentry, turned a blind eye and busied herself by spending the money she got from him as well as what she got from her lovers.

Unfortunately for him, the current economic downturn has taken a toll on his business and he is not as buoyant as he used to be few years ago.

Mercy Aigbe and her husband

The NET reports that according to the well placed source, ‘The man has a hotel where Lagos-based actors and actresses use to shoot their movies, but the business was mismanaged and nobody goes there anymore.

‘As of now, he doesn’t have any business going on for him. How many wide-mouthed actresses can live with that type of hopelessness? The situation has gotten so bad that now Mercy can openly cavort with the politicians that have been on her case since. I’m sure that in no time, her shop in Omole will be shifted to Lekki as she has always dreamed of.’

The last straw that broke the camel’s back for the couple was a combination of Mercy’s sudden boldness and her husband’s latest fling with a very close associate of hers. Opemititi, as the Covenant University graduate is called, was very close to Mercy.

She had been said to have taken the younger woman under her wings, even introducing her to some ‘sugar daddies’ that flushed her with cash that she left her bank job for a flimsy interior decor business that had little or no structure.

Mercy had trusted her so much because of the secrets they both shared it is was shocking to her that this person could betray her by sleeping with her husband.

Consequently, she cut Opemititi off from her in the last one month and decided to duke it out with her husband.
The issues eventually overheated and spilled into a fight that many couples could have overlooked.

Gentry asked Aigbe to cook a special meal for him and his friends. She refused to do so and her husband pounced on her as he had reportedly done in the past.

But by now, Mercy Aigbe had had enough and fought back bitterly, lashing out from all the pain and anger of several years. Unsurprisingly, his strength was incomparable to hers and he beat her to a pulp.

For Mercy, that was one beating too many and she began divorce proceedings when she was strong enough to leave a private hospital where she had been receiving treatment.

For a couple who had made such a big show of being endlessly in love with each other, their sad end was enabled by a long period of resentment caused by both parties’ infidelity to the other.

Eventually, Instagram posts were not enough to save the marriage, and instead became where the Aigbe-Gentrys ended their seven-year nuptials.

For now, the actress is holed up in a Magodo apartment while her husband is exploring his options in a divorce proceeding, seeing that of all the three women that have children for him, Mercy is the only one who he married and might lose all he has worked for should the case go in her favour.

‘The two other women who have children for Lanre are currently laughing at him because as things stand now, he’s the biggest loser,‘ the source concluded.

5 Historical Facts Badagry Kindom Not A Subject Under Oba of Lagos, By Sewhude Akande

5 Historical Facts Badagry Kindom Not A Subject Under Oba of Lagos, By Sewhude Akande

Oba Akran of Badagry and Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu

Contrary to claim from quarters, who do not know history or being economical with the truth and fact that Badagry kingdom was, and is, controlled by the Oba of Lagos: a historian and the Publisher of CityMood Magazine, Mr. Abolaji Sewhude Akande has outlined 5 historical facts that depict otherwise.

Below are the facts:

1. Oba Akinsemoyin,  Oba Adele and Oba Akitoye of Lagos took refuge in Badagry in 1725, 1820 and 1845 respectively. How could they have possibly taken refuge in an area controlled by their competitors on the throne?

2. Badagry has some of the most ancient thrones in the whole of Lagos State. Thrones such as the Akran of Badagry, Alapa of Apa, Onilogbo of Ilogbo-Eremi amongst others which pre-date the monarchy in Lagos Island.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

3. The Akran title was established in 1560 while Prince Ado was crowned the first king of Lagos Island in 1630

4. Lagos did not have any influence or lordship over Badagry. In fact, Badagry's fine monarchy influenced things in Lagos, after Lagos kings who took refuge in Badagry along with Badagry elites who accompanied them back, such as the Suenu of Lagos introduced the White Cap (Kremes) to Lagos chiefs along with other cultural rites.

Have you not wondered the meaning of Kremes in Yoruba or even Benin? It has none - it's indigenous to the people of Badagry.

5. Badagry ceded its territory to the British and not to the Lagos monarchy. For ease of administration, the British annexed Badagry into Lagos Colony in 1863 without subjugating its people or monarchy to the Oba of Lagos. As it will be easier for them to administer the hinterland from there.

THE UNTOLD: How Patience Jonathan Fell Husband's Reign In 2015

THE UNTOLD: How Patience Jonathan Fell Husband's Reign In 2015

Patience Jonathan

Key players in the 2015 elections say the conduct of ex-First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, contributed significantly to the defeat of her husband, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, at the polls.

Former Senate President David Mark; ex-governor of Mrs. Jonathan’s home state of Rivers, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi; House of Representatives Speaker at the time, Hon.Aminu Tambuwal and Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima all blamed her for allegedly creating enemies for Jonathan.

Alleged acidic political comments by the ex-First Lady in the run-up to the elections are cited as part of the misconducts that caused resentment against Jonathan.

Her mismanagement of the abduction of Chibok girls is also believed to have cost the ex-President a major electoral loss in Borno in particular and the North-East in general.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Also, Dame Patience Jonathan’s persistent insults on Buhari, the North, others cost Jonathan second term ticket.

The 2012 Wikileaks report indicated that the ex-First Lady has “a more forceful personality than him and that he has little or no control over her.”

These were the highlights of some of the key players in the 2015 general elections.

The affected leaders include a former President of the Senate, Sen. David Mark, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, ex-Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima and ex-Governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu

Their revelations are contained in a new book, “Against The Run of Play” written by the Chairman of THISDAY Editorial Board, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi.

The book was launched in Lagos yesterday.

Tambuwal, who is now the governor of Sokoto State, said Patience created a crisis of confidence between him and Jonathan which forced his defection from PDP to APC.

He said he was at the wheel, driving himself to a friend’s house on an April night in 2012 when his mobile phone rang.

He said although the woman at the other end of the line from the caller ID was very well known to him, the caller had handed her mobile handset to another female who was the ex-First Lady.

The ex-First Lady wasted no time in tongue-lashing Tambuwal.

She said: “You this Hausa boy, you want to bring down the government of my husband; you want to disgrace him out of power? Una no fit! God no go allow you.”

For about five minutes, Mrs. Jonathan allegedly railed against Tambuwal, who was accused of harbouring a sinister agenda against the Federal Government and the President.

Asked whether he said anything in reply while the vituperation lasted, Tambuwal said, “What do you want me to say to the wife of the President? I just kept quiet and allowed her to vent her anger on me. After a while, she paused, and I asked, ‘Are you done, Ma? Thank you very much’ – and I dropped the call.”

Although Mrs. Jonathan had called in respect of a resolution by the House of Representatives to probe the fuel subsidy scam, her resentment against Tambuwal appeared more personal.

By some accounts, Tambuwal wanted to work with the President, and went as far as approaching the Senate President to be his guarantor in the early days, a role Mark was happy to play.

“I took him and Emeka (Ihedioha) to the President for a meeting where they gave assurances that they would cooperate and work with the government. But there was always a concern from the Jonathan camp that Tambuwal was an ambitious politician,” Mark added.

Mark said the First Lady kept alleging that Tambuwal had presidential aspirations and for that reason, could not be relied upon to support her husband.

The former Senate President shared his own insight on the First Lady’s suspicion.

He added: “I guess she had the same fear about me even when she never said it to my face. She once accosted Senator Joy Emordi to say, ‘Joy, I hear you are the manager of David Mark Presidential Campaign Organization’, which was a baseless accusation.

“I had to meet the President to clarify issues with him. So, I would say it was President Jonathan and his wife who radicalised Tambuwal and turned him into a political foe.”

Mark said although he raised the alarm about the imminent defeat of Jonathan, his voice was drowned by sycophants around Jonathan.

“I saw it and at different times, I pointed out to him and the party that the projections being made by some people around the president about what the voting pattern in the north would be were wrong,” Mr. Mark said.

“I could see the conspiracy and the gang-up building up in the north against the aspiration of Jonathan but my voice was drowned out by those who took it for granted that a sitting president, and one from PDP, could not lose.

“Some people were deceiving the president with the kind of false scenarios they were painting for him.

“The VP could see the conspiracy but I don’t know how much influence he had on the campaign. Why Jonathan couldn’t see it until it was too late is what I find difficult to understand.”

Amaechi speaking on his strained relationship with Jonathan and Patience said: “I am happy President Jonathan told you about my problem with his wife but he apparently did not tell you the whole story. The question you should ask yourself is, why should a Governor have problem with the wife of the President?

“The simple answer is that I could not surrender my mandate to a woman in Abuja, even if such a person was wife of the President. Also, I could not possibly grant questionable demands that would make me betray my oath of office. I won’t say more than that for now since I am also writing my memoir, but that basically was my sin with Dame Patience Jonathan.”

The problem between Amaechi and the presidency was triggered by the conduct of Dame Patience Jonathan during a two-day visit to Rivers State on 9th August 2010 when the ex-First Lady engaged the sitting governor in open altercation in Okrika, her home town.

While Amaechi was explaining plans to demolish some structures in Okrika Dame Patience Jonathan snatched the microphone from him and shouted, “Listen, you must listen to me!”

“I want you to get me clear: I am from Okrika, I know the problems of my people. So, I know what I am talking (about). I do not want us to go into crisis.

“ We are preaching peace and we must maintain peace at any time. But what I am telling you is that you always say you must demolish. That word ‘must’ you use is not good. It is by pleading. You appeal to the owners of the compound because they will not go into exile. Land is a serious issue.”

By the time she was done, the First Lady had whipped up sentiment within the community against Amaechi’s plan.

The author said: “From that day, the battle-line was drawn between the two. Mrs. Jonathan had made it clear that she would not tolerate a governor from her state who would not bow. And it was not in Amaechi’s nature to be easily muzzled.

“Compounding the problem was the loss by Rivers State of 46 oil wells to Abia State and the ceding of five oil wells in Soku to Bayelsa State. Amaechi believed his state was being punished for his political stance, most of which arose as a result of his chairmanship of the NGF. He took the battle public and raised the stakes.”

“At every opportunity, Amaechi spoke about the way the presidency was working against the interest of the people of Rivers State, all because of a personal disagreement with him.

Amaechi said: “46 oil wells belonging to Rivers State have just been given to Abia State. Soku is a Kalabari town in Rivers State. 71 oil wells in Abonnema (headquarters of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State) would have been given to Bayelsa State on the same Monday the Kalabari people went to Abuja to protest.”

He added that, “There is rumour that they are emasculating me because of 2015. It is unfortunate. For now, I have no plan for 2015. If they are taking Rivers oil wells because of 2015, they should leave us alone.”

Amaechi also said he had issues with Jonathan on Independent Power Projects(IPPs), the oil wells in Soku, and the management of Federation Account.

Amaechi related that in a private session he had with Jonathan on the need for states to manage their Independent Power Projects(IPPs) the President not only reassured that the request by Rivers State would be granted, he asked the governor to write to Abuja on the issue and the letter was sent.

He said: “At that period, I had no problem with Jonathan as I was fully behind his aspiration to be president; the impression created was that he would treat my request after the 2011 election. But the moment he won the election, he wrote to turn down my request. That was bad faith.

“It was as if I was talking to the Governor of Bayelsa State rather than the President of Nigeria. He made it clear to me that protecting whatever he considered to be in the interest of Bayelsa was more important to him than doing the right thing for all the states in Nigeria, including Rivers where he spent most of his life. At that point, I knew there was no way we could work together.”

“If in one year, you took about N300 billion from the federation account to pay for subsidy and the next year, you are taking almost two trillion naira for the same thing when the fundamentals had not changed, then serious questions should be asked. And as NGF Chairman, it was my responsibility to ask those questions and Jonathan took it personal.”

China bans Allah, Muhammad, other Islamic names

China bans Allah, Muhammad, other Islamic names

- China has banned Islamic names

- Muhammad, Jihad and Islam are among at least 29 names now banned

- If a parent chooses one of the barred names, the child will be denied government benefits

Authorities in western China are prohibiting parents from naming their children Islamic names in the latest effort to dilute the influence of religion on life in the ethnic Uighur minority heartland.

“Muhammad,” ”Jihad” and “Islam” are among at least 29 names now banned in the heavily Muslim region, according to a list distributed by overseas Uighur activists.

If a parent chooses one of the barred names, the child will be denied government benefits, Fox reports.

The names listed on the government document disseminated by Uighur groups include several related to historic religious or political figures and some place names.

“Imam,” ”Hajj,” ”Turknaz,” ”Azhar” and “Wahhab” are on the list, as are “Saddam,” ”Arafat,” Medina” and “Cairo.”Judgment calls about which names are deemed to be “overly religious” will be made by local government officials, according to Radio Free Asia, the U.S.-funded radio service which first reported the naming directive.

An official at a county-level public security office said some names were banned because they had a “religious background.” It is unclear how widespread the ban is or whether it is tightly enforced. The official refused to identify herself, as is common with Chinese officials.

The naming restrictions are part of a broader government effort to secularize Xinjiang, which is home to roughly 10 million Uighurs, a Turkic people who mostly follow Sunni Islam.

Top officials including Xinjiang’s Communist Party chief have publicly said that radical Islamic thought has infiltrated the region from Central Asia, protracting a bloody, years long insurgency that has claimed hundreds of lives.

Government-linked scholars and high-ranking officials, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, have urged local governments to better assimilate their Muslim minorities into the majority Han Chinese culture, and many ethnic policy hard-liners have decried a trend of so-called “Arabization” affecting China’s 21 million Muslims.

Aside from the prohibition on Islamic names, local Xinjiang officials have, at times, strongly discouraged or prohibited Islamic veils, while government-linked commentators have called for bans of mosques with domes or other Middle Eastern architectural styles.

Uighur activists and human rights groups say that radical thought had never gained widespread traction, but restrictions on religious expression are fueling a cycle of radicalization and violence.

For instance, “Mehmet,” the widely seen Turkic version of “Muhammad,” is considered “mainstream” in Xinjiang and would likely be permitted, RFA reported.

Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the overseas World Uighur Congress activist group, called the naming directive a policy bearing a “hostile attitude” toward Uighurs.

“Han parents choosing Western names are considered trendy but Uighurs have to accept Chinese regulations or else be accused of being separatists or terrorists,” Raxit said.
