Corruption: Why I refused to declare my assets-Jonathan

Corruption: Why I refused to declare my assets-Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has defended his decision shunning entreaties to make his assets public while in office between 2011 and 2015.

Former President Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan at the State House in Abuja

The former president, whose action is captured in the new book, ‘Against the Run of Play: How an incumbent president was defeated’ by Segun Adeniyi, argued that he did not believe that declaring his assets publicly could stem the tide of corruption or degrade the level of terrorism in the country.

Jonathan said: “It is not the President declaring his assets that will end Boko Haram and whether I am criticised from head to toe I will not declare my assets publicly; it is not right; I did not even want to declare my assets as VP but was forced by the then President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

“The law is clear. A public officer should declare his asset, and if there are issues, then the relevant agencies would have a basis to assess whether you have amassed wealth or not.

Pressed further to make public his assets in the spirit of the anti-corruption war and moral basis, the book quotes Jonathan as saying, “I don’t give a damn about it.

The law is clear about it and so, making it public is not issue and I will not play into the hands of people. I have nothing to hide.

“I declared under Yar Ádua because he did it, but it is not proper; it is not the president declaring assets that will change the country,” he insisted.

The book noted, “By refusing to make public his assets declaration, Jonathan easily played into the hands of the opposition that had started to define him as a corrupt leader.

“That characterisation hounded him throughout his tenure and would become a major campaign point in 2015.

“But if there was any corruption scandal that did incalculable damage to the credibility of his government, it was the mismanagement of the fuel subsidy funds,” the book noted.

It went further: “And with that, critical stakeholders, including organised labour unions and civil society groups-responded with anger and condemnation, vowing to challenge the Federal Government by calling for a nationwide strike.”

North Korea’s Kim is ‘a pretty smart cookie’, says Trump

North Korea’s Kim is ‘a pretty smart cookie’, says Trump

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

US President Donald Trump offered some backhanded praise for North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, calling him “a pretty smart cookie” in a television interview that aired Sunday.

Trump’s almost admiring remarks came amid soaring tensions with North Korea over its missile and nuclear programs, with an alarmed Washington looking to China for help in reining in Kim.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Trump said he had “no idea” whether Kim was sane or not, but said the North Korean leader had faced a formidable challenge in taking over the country at a reported age of 27 after his father’s death in 2011.

“He’s dealing with obviously very tough people, in particular the generals and others. And at a very young age, he was able to assume power,” Trump said in the interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“A lot of people, I’m sure, tried to take that power away, whether it was his uncle or anybody else. And he was able to do it.

“So obviously, he’s a pretty smart cookie,” he said.

“But we have a situation that we just cannot let — we cannot let what’s been going on for a long period of years continue,” Trump added.

North Korea has kept the West on edge for weeks over signs it may conduct a sixth nuclear test, punctuated by a series of missile tests that have aroused US fears that the regime may be close to developing a ballistic missile capable of hitting the US mainland with a nuclear warhead.

– ‘A chess game’ –

The North, defying mounting US pressure, launched its latest missile test on Saturday, which South Korea said failed.

Trump refused comment on whether the United States had anything to do with the missile test failure.

“It is a chess game. I just don’t want people to know what my thinking is. So eventually, he will have a better delivery system. And if that happens, we can’t allow it to happen.”

Hours before the North Korean test, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned of “catastrophic consequences” if the international community does not act more forcefully to sanction Pyongyang.

The United States has deployed a naval strike group to the area led by the carrier USS Carl Vinson, which on Saturday began drilling with the South Korean navy to practice procedures for tracking and intercepting enemy ballistic missiles.

On Sunday, the two allies concluded a massive annual military exercise called “Foal Eagle,” which involved around 20,000 South Korean and 10,000 US troops.

– Betting on China –
If North Korea carries out a nuclear test, Trump told CBS, “I would not be happy.”

“And I can tell you also, I don’t believe that the president of China, who is a very respected man, will be happy either,” Trump said.

Asked if “not happy” signified “military action,” Trump answered: “I don’t know. I mean, we’ll see.”

So far, Trump has placed his biggest bet on getting China to use its leverage to pressure Pyongyang to change its behavior, a strategy that has failed to produce results in the past.

Since meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida April 6-7, Trump has set aside his campaign threats to impose tariffs on Chinese imports and declare Beijing a currency manipulator.

“I think that, frankly, North Korea is maybe more important than trade. Trade is very important. But massive warfare with millions, potentially millions of people being killed? That, as we would say, trumps trade,” he told CBS.

“Now, if China can help us with North Korea and can solve that problem — that’s worth making not as good a trade deal for the United States,” he said.

Details Emerge on Why Oba Akiolu ‘Snubbed’ Ooni in Public

Details Emerge on Why Oba Akiolu ‘Snubbed’ Ooni in Public

Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Aremu Akiolu

Some interesting details on why the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, might have ‘snubbed’ the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, at a public function recently, have emerged days after conflicting reasons were churned out by both the palace and concerned individuals seeking an effective management of the situation.

A source, who is a close friend and business associate of the Ooni, told our reporter last night that the incident involving the two traditional rulers may not be unconnected to past business encounter between the two of them.

The sources told our reporter that there was an unpleasant engagement between the Ooni and Oba Akiolu, before he became the Ife monarch.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

As a businessman and property developer, the source said, Ooni had bought a large expanse of land on the Island for a certain project, a deal said to have been sealed and delivered with those concerned, including all the financial commitments resolved.

Oba Akiolu was said to have gotten wind of the deal later and allegedly stopped the development even when Ooni had invested hugely in it.

But as one with royal upbringing, Ooni was said to have sought audience with the Lagos Oba and pleaded with him, reeling out details of how far he had come with the project.

But the Oba of Lagos, the source further said, declined all entreaties and insisted that for any development to continue on the property, Ooni must pay royalty, which was said to be running into several millions of naira.

“It was a lot of money, that even the Ooni was shocked Oba Akiolu could demand of him,” sources alleged.

Unfortunately, for the Ooni, it was said to be a large sum at that time for him because he had put in so much into the very development and found it difficult to raise the money.

He therefore sought Oba Akiolu’s understanding and pleaded for a reduction, which Akiolu allegedly declined to grant, insisting he either pays the sum or forgets about the development.

Thus, the Ooni, the source said, quickly rallied some of his dependable friends for assistance before he came up with the money. But as fate would have it, a few months after this encounter, Ogunwusi became the Ooni of Ife.

“That is the truth of this bitterness, at least, what we can link this to. The Oba of Lagos hasn’t completely gotten over the emergence of ‘Yeye and against the backdrop of how he treated him…

“We were always at the palace in Idugaran nearly every day, prostrating for Akiolu with ‘Yeye, just for him to relax his stand a bit, but he was adamant as if his sole aim was to jeopardise the project.

‘Yeye was at the palace for many days, only going to beg and plead with the Oba to reduce what he was asking for and not to dissuade him from asking for what was due to him. But all fell on deaf ears.

“’Yeye was forced to raise that money because a lot was at stake. But even if ‘Yeye had not become Ooni, he still has his respect for age and the throne as a child born into royalty, who was also raised with strict adherence to tradition.

I mean, apart from that, ‘Yeye has never had any untoward interaction with Oba Akiolu that would warrant snubbing him in public the way he did.”

Efforts by THISDAY last night to get the palace of the Oba of Lagos to react to the allegation were futile.

Interestingly, the Lagos palace has come out amid the controversy to defend Oba Akiolu, saying the Lagos Oba did not snub the Ooni but only greeted him in line with the old tradition of the state.

One of the White Cap Chiefs, Lateef Aderibigbe Ajose, Opeluwa Onido of Lagos, who spoke on behalf of the palace contended that Oba Akiolu did not ignore the Ooni but that his response to Ooni’s greetings was the standard response and the culturally acclaimed way of greeting by a Lagos monarch.

He said each tribe had its own peculiar way of greetings and that the Oba of Lagos was basically trying to revive the culture and tradition of ancient Lagos with his greetings.

“The sign by Oba Akiolu signifies, ‘inu mi, inu e’, the culture of greeting in Lagos. If Oba Akiolu wanted to ignore, he would have turned his face away from Ooni,” he said.

But before the palace came public with its defence, the story that was in circulation in defence of the Lagos Oba was that he was visually impaired, having been allegedly battling glaucoma for almost 21 years, meaning he probably did not see the Ooni. Akiolu was reported to have publicly admitted this.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Although the Lagos monarch has been seen in recent times being ushered round by someone in public, an indication that he might truly be suffering sight problem, the palace defence has however punctured that narrative.

Meanwhile, Ooni’s palace has dismissed whatever happened at the event, saying he would continue to respect Oba Akiolu, because his main agenda as the Ooni was to foster unity amongst the traditional rulers in the country and South-west in particular.

“Nobody should castigate anybody for doing what he did because of the position he holds and because of his age. Ooni would not stop according his colleagues and every category of people the respect they deserve.

“The Ooni of Ife is not ready to make any official statement over what happened between him and the Oba of Lagos. He still holds Oba Akiolu in high esteem and what happened yesterday will not stop the Ooni from holding him in high esteem,” Ooni’s media office said.

Yet, the second reaction by the Palace of Ooni stated that, “Kabiyesi Ogunwusi is committed to his peace and unity agenda, which he has embarked on since he ascended the throne of his forefathers.

We refrain from reacting officially, with a view to avoiding fanning any ember of discord as Oba Akiolu remains a respected monarch and the Ooni had established a very robust and healthy relationship with him before his installation as Ooni of Ife.”

Oba Akiolu was captured on video snubbing the Ooni at a public function on April 25 and the video has since gone viral.

The 27-second video shows the Ooni as he arrived at the venue of an event, in Lagos, where he first exchanged pleasantries with the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, and they both hugged.

But as the Ooni made to greet Oba Akiolu, who was next on the row to the Obi of Onitsha, he stylishly rebuffed him by waving his hand in a scowl.

The development has since caused a rage amongst the people, all of whom condemned Akiolu’s action.

New revelation has been made about the large number of Fulani men and women who have converted to Christianity.

More than 400 persons of Fulani ethnicity across the country have converted to Christianity, it has been revealed.

Daily Post reports that Rev. Copper Sebok in charge of COCIN Church Panyam, Plateau State, made the disclosure on Sunday at the end of a 3-day conference organised for all Fulani converts of all denominations nationwide.

He urged the converts to preach the gospel of peace to their kindred in order to reduce the prevailing crises in the country.

Sebok said: “The conference is also a re-union service for all Fulani converts regardless of their denominations and to share experiences and encourage one another in the propagation of the gospel of peace.

“It is a concept of COCIN 43 years ago, and to debunk the notion that Fulani’s are nomadic and can’t be reached with the gospel of Christ.’’

In his sermon, the cleric said man must have compassion on the unsaved to draw them to Christ for eternal salvation.

He decried the level of crises in Nigeria which usually resulted to loss of lives and property, adding that Nigerians must embrace peace for the progress and development of the nation.

Rev. Hassan Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the converts, expressed gratitude to God for giving them a new lease of life as Christians.

He disclosed that the conference was an eye opener for them to go and proclaim the gospel not only to their kindred but to all nations.

“We have a total of seven Fulani people ordained Reverends beside other Pastors and Evangelists and we are doing our best to enlighten our brothers and sisters about Christianity”.

He thanked the organizers of the conference and appealed to both Christians and Muslim to continue to pray for the peace of the country.

PDP Governors DISUNITED, As Fayose, Dickon Group Battles Ahead Party Convention

PDP Governors DISUNITED, As Fayose, Dickon Group Battles Ahead Party Convention

Fayose and Dickosn Seriake

The leadership crisis bedeviling the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has become a straight battle between Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson and his Ekiti counterpart, Ayodele Fayose.

Report by the Nation Newspaper detailed that some governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are reviewing their opposition to the planned national convention of the party by the Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the party.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

The governors, The Nation, can now reveal, are calculating that they will be taking a big risk if they fail to be part of the convention for as long as the Court of Appeal’s verdict recognizing Sheriff as chairman has not been reversed.

A new leadership is to be elected at the planned convention.

Some of the governors, it was gathered, are of the opinion that they should join Sheriff in organizing the convention, since the former Governor of Borno State remains the one recognised by law, for now, as the party leader.

But others are opposed to the Governors’ Forum having anything to do with the planned convention, preferring instead to wait for the outcome of the former President Goodluck Jonathan peace initiative.

The opposing governors are said to be angry with Sheriff for walking out on party leaders at the last peace parley in Abuja.

A party source said:”They claim that he (Sheriff) insulted the entire party and the former president with his action on that day and with his subsequent statements in the media and elsewhere. They also feel that for him to announce that he is going on with the convention with or without the other faction is a breach of all agreements earlier reached.

“Also, some of those opposed to Sheriff are still optimistic that the Supreme Court will upturn his judicial victory soon. And when that happens, he will lose all legitimacy to hold a convention for the party. They are impatiently waiting for the Court to make a pronouncement that will finally halt Sheriff and his camp in their bid to foist a new leadership on the party.”

The Nation learnt that the disagreement among the governors over the planned convention is aptly responsible for the inability of the forum to meet lately.

It is feared that calling a meeting of the forum at this time will not be in the best interest of the party and the forum.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, who is also the Chairman of the Forum, is in the vanguard of the opposition to Sheriff and the planned national convention being put together by his team.

Sources said Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State who headed the peace and reconciliation committee set up by ex-President Jonathan believes strongly that the convention, as planned by his reconciliation committee, remains the solution to the crisis within the party.

A source said:”In spite of the seeming collapse of the peace effort put in place by his committee, Dickson is still working hard to get the Governors’ Forum to throw its weight behind the planned national convention. But Fayose, who is the chairman of the Forum, is determined not to be part of the convention as being planned.

“Consequently, the governors are sharply divided over the matter. What we now have are governors who support Dickson’s view as well as those who are aligning with Fayose.

“ While I can tell you more governors want to be part of the convention based on the last court ruling that pronounced Sheriff as the authentic chairman of the party, it is also important to note that Fayose is not the only one opposed to the convention.”

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Speaking on the matter only after pleading for anonymity, a media aide to one of the PDP governors in the Southsouth revealed that his governor is one of those opposed to the Forum’s participation in the convention.

According to him, it is true that some governors are going round trying to mobilise others to support the convention, “Their argument is the need to comply with court rulings.

Well, they are entitled to their opinion but my governor is opposed to such participation. We will have nothing to do with people who insulted the party elders without a second thought.

“And it is also our strong belief that the Supreme Court will remove these impostors from the leadership of our party soon.

We are optimistic and unrelenting in our pursuit of justice in the leadership struggle that has adversely affected the PDP since after the decisive 2015 general elections.”

Lagos Misery N15b Is Jonathan's Campaign Fund - PDP Chieftain Insists, Reveals How Billions Siphoned Through Suspended NIA Boss

Lagos Misery N15b Is Jonathan's Campaign Fund - PDP Chieftain Insists, Reveals How Billions Siphoned Through Suspended NIA Boss

Jonathan buhari and Ikoyi Misery Billions

Mr. Deji Adejayanju has insisted that the N15 billion found in Osborne Tower in Ikoyi, Lagos is no doubt, part of monies pumped into ex-President Goodluck Jonathan 2015 campaign though the suspended National Intelligence Agency Director General, Mr. Ayo Oke.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

News Punch had a few weeks ago reported that Adeyanju Deji, the former PDP New media Director claimed the suspended National Intelligence Agency, Mr. Ayo Oke diverted monies meant for the campaign of Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

Today, he has also insisted the is part of huge fund doled out by President Jonathan through the security agency headed by Oke, fresh report according to Punch Newspaper detailed.

Deji in an interview with Punch Newspaper narrated how the huge fund was actually doled out through the office of the embattled NIA boss. Excerpt below as culled from Punch Newspaper

What is your relationship with the suspended Director General, National Intelligence Agency, Ayodele Oke?

I met him a couple of times during the 2015 presidential campaign. That was all. We don’t have any personal relationship. We only met during the run-up to the election, in the course of the campaign.

So after then, you didn’t meet him again?

No, we didn’t have any dealing with him until after the election when Femi Fani-Kayode called me that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was investigating him.

So he called me to his house; he was supposed to meet a former chief of staff to the president, Brig.-Gen. Jones Arogbofa (retd.), and when I and Fani-Kayode got to his house (Arogbofa’s residence), we met the DG,NIA there and he gave FFK information about how the EFCC was probing him, Nenadi Usman and others.

That was the first time I saw him after the election. We met at the same house again where the DG offered FFK $1m, that he should secretly return the money to the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu and that Magu would not proceed with his investigation.

He said Magu would forget about the case and FFK may not be charged to court. FFK, I and the former COS were all there. FFK didn’t collect the money.

Why would Oke offer FFK money to bribe Magu?

The incident occurred few weeks before FFK was arrested. I can’t remember the date precisely, but it happened two weeks or so before FFK was arrested. Oke got wind of the fact that the EFCC was investigating FFK, so he alerted him about it. But FFK knew before then that he was being investigated.

I think he offered the money because he was involved at the various levels of campaign funding. He was involved in the disbursement of campaign funds, this I know because I was tactically involved in the campaign.

There are some things I won’t want to disclose now for strategic reasons.

Do you think the over $43m that was recovered in Lagos was part of the campaign funds?

It may or may not be, but investigations would reveal whether it was part of the funds. But I know that the NIA DG had campaign funds.

How much was given to him?

I wouldn’t know the exact amount, but I know he was given campaign funds because I was involved in the campaign.

Were other security chiefs given campaign funds?

Many people were given campaign funds, though I wouldn’t know about other security chiefs, but I am sure about the DG, NIA. I know one or two instances when he disbursed money.

Who did he disburse money to?

I won’t want to go into that. I am so sure that campaign funds were given to him. I don’t believe in the stories in the dailies that the money was meant for a particular covert operation, I don’t believe it. Oke had a reasonable amount of campaign funds in his custody.

Do you think he utilised the money for election or he diverted it?

He diverted it. He diverted most of the money. I do not know the source of the money that was discovered in Ikoyi because I was not there when he was hiding it. I obviously can’t know from where he took the money or when he hid it.

But I know  that he had access to campaign funds and he was very close to Adamu Mu’azu, the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, and the apartment where the money was found used to belong to him.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan alleged in a new book, ‘Against the Run of Play’ by Olusegun Adeniyi, that Mu’azu worked against him. Do you believe this?

I used to work with Mu’azu. I would say I believe it partially in the sense that maybe he did not do enough to make Jonathan win. But he delivered his local government for Jonathan despite the fact that Buhari won and Jonathan lost the election in Bauchi State.

When people are saying Mu’azu worked against the former president, I do not have enough facts to support that, but I am of the opinion that he did not do enough to ensure Jonathan’s re-election.

Do you know anything about Folashade Oke, wife of DG, NIA?

No, I have never met her, I don’t know her.

There were reports that PDP campaign materials were found in the apartment, does this suggest that the seized money was part of campaign funds?

Like I told you earlier, it is possible that the money was part of campaign funds. I knew because I was part of the campaign and I know that many people diverted money meant for campaign.

That’s one of the reasons we lost the election.  So many people betrayed the former president. Jonathan also confirmed it in the Segun Adeniyi book.

I believe that people would understand some of these issues. Some people diverted money that was raised for the campaign and squandered it. This was money raised for the campaign. The one we solicited from other sources were also diverted.

Can you identify some of the people who did this?

Many people alleged that the former chairman diverted campaign funds that were given to him and other monies raised by the party. Many states complained that they never got money.

Even the Ekiti State chapter of the party complained that they never got any money for campaign.

Those are some of the reasons why the PDP lost the election and Jonathan was defeated. If we must do a re-appraisal, we must speak the truth and put the record straight.

So many people have said he diverted funds, so people who should have received funds said they did not get it, which means maybe he actually worked against the interest of the party. You never can tell sometimes; political interest changes.

Those who wanted Jonathan out had their reasons and they had many friends in and out of government who gave out documents from the Presidential Villa to them. The only person who can betray you is your friend.

Did state governors also divert funds?

I am not sure, I don’t have any information on them.

Do you have record of those that leaked classified documents?

Those are things I cannot delve into for certain reasons.

But you know them?

I know some of them, but I cannot delve into it at the moment. They were in the Villa; they were the people Jonathan trusted with his life. They were the ones who were leaking documents to the opposition.  At a time, they even recorded the former president’s meetings and gave it out to the opposition. It was that bad. Jonathan was betrayed by the people he trusted.

How British-Nigerian Anthony Joshua Emerges Heavyweight World Champion

How British-Nigerian Anthony Joshua Emerges Heavyweight World Champion

British professional boxer Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua has emerged victorious from the biggest post-war bout held on British soil by knocking out Wladimir Klitschko in front of a 90,000 people.

The two titans squared off at Wembley Stadium watched on by the cream of Hollywood’s A-list.

The Ukrainian was also sent crashing to the floor in the fifth round and twice more in the pivotal 11th as the 27-year-old British fighter took his record to 19 wins in 19 fights.

The British fighter was floored in the sixth round but fought back to drop the Ukrainian with dramatic late onslaught in the eleventh.

Klitschko returned to his feet for the third time in the bout but referee David Fields waved the fight off with the former champion unable to defend himself.

“What can I say? 19-0, three and a half years in the game. As I said, I’m not perfect but I’m trying and if you don’t take part you’re going to fail,” said Joshua. “As boxing states, you leave your ego at the door and you respect your opponent. So a massive shout out to Wladimir Klitschko.” Tributes were quickly paid to both men.

“How much heart did @Klitschko show in this fight? Gotta respect it. Hold ur head high brother! #joshuaklitschko,” tweeted Britain’s Lennox Lewis, a former world heavyweight champion sitting ringside.

US legend Sugar Ray Leonard added also on Twitter: “Such an amazing fight with 2 great fighters. Lot of heart by both fighters. A lot of questions answered by @anthonyfjoshua #JoshuaKlitchsko.”

I'll RESIGN If... - Saraki Vows

I'll RESIGN If... - Saraki Vows

Bukola Saraki

The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Saraki, has vowed to resign if the 2017 Budget of the National Assembly does not come with a lineby- line outline.

Saraki stated his position on his Twitter handle.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

He tweeted: “The line by line of the National Assembly budget, a key part of the #opennass is a done deal. Will be laid with 2017 budget.”

The National Assembly has come under pressure over its failure to, like other arms and agencies of government, reveal the details of its Budget.

Though the National Assembly said it has been doing this in the last five years or thereabouts, Nigerians are not convinced about the claim.

It was in this regard that some followers of Saraki raised the issue on his Twitter handle.

But Saraki said the details for the 2017 Budget of the National Assembly is a done deal.

Answering another question on the threat to resign, Saraki said it would not come to that.

He tweeted: “Resignation won’t be necessary. #Opennass is a done deal. You can start counting down. Electronic record of attendance also on the way.”

Ghen Ghen! Goodluck Jonathan Finally Reacts to Segun Adeniyi's Book, 'Against The Run Of Play'

Goodluck Jonathan

Nigeria's immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan, has reacted to a new book written about events that occurred during the last presidential election.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has reacted to the much talked about ‘Against the Run of Play’ written by Segun Adeniyi, Chairman of the editorial board of ThisDay newspapers.

Airing his opinion on the content of the book, Goodluck Jonathan said “I have just read Segun Adeniyi’s new book, ‘Against the Run of Play’ which has so far enjoyed tremendous reviews in the media.

“My take on it is that the book as presented contains many distorted claims on the 2015 Presidential election by many of the respondents.
“There will obviously be more books like that on this subject by concerned Nigerians. However, I believe that at the right time, the main characters in the elections including myself will come out with a true account of what transpired either in major interviews or books”

Ghen Ghen! Goodluck Jonathan Finally Reacts to Segun Adeniyi's Book, 'Against The Run Of Play'

The author had revealed that the idea for the book germinated when he decided to research into why it is difficult for incumbent presidents to lose elections in Africa.

He had also stated that events that culminated in the defeat of President Jonathan, made it clear to him that while a credible opposition platform that the All Progressives Congress (APC) represented helped, it was not the main reason why the election went the way it did.

So, he decided to interrogate the factors that led to that unprecedented electoral outcome in the country.

I make no apologies for treading on toes - Obasanjo

I make no apologies for treading on toes - Obasanjo

Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that he will not apologise for treading on anybody’s toes during his reign as president of the country between 1999 and 2007.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Obasanjo said he did what he had to do and had no regrets.

The elder statesman spoke in Lagos on Friday during a reception organised by his close associates to celebrate his 80th birthday.

“I make no apologies for treading on anybody’s toes. If anybody put their toes on my path, I will tread on them,” Obasanjo said.

He attributed Nigeria’s woes to inconsistencies in government policies.

Obasanjo said the failure of successive leaders to consolidate on the achievements of their predecessors had made governance look like an impossible task.

Obasanjo recalled that during one of his visits to Singapore, he asked the country’s former Prime Minister, Harry Lee Kuan Yew, the secrets of the Asian country’s success.

The former president said, “He (Yew) simply told me their secret was that they did a few things right and continued to do them right. We keep lamenting as if Nigeria is impossible to run or get things rights.

“I think that during my tenure as president, we did quite a few things right but our failure to continue to do what we have done right is the problem.

“One of the things we got right was the Universal Basic Education. We said Nigerians had no reason not to have at least nine years of education.

“On primary healthcare, we did things right because we realised that if we provided basic care for malaria treatment, we would reduce infant and maternal mortality.

“On anti-corruption, I think we got it right. But did we continue to get things right?”

Speaking earlier at the occasion, two former governors, Gbenga Daniel (Ogun State) and Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun State) had claimed that Obasanjo trod on their toes during his administration.

“In fact, Baba almost crushed my toes. But Baba is a great man who cares for the nation and wants things to be done the right way,” Daniel said, with Oyinlola expressing the same sentiment.

A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu, in his remarks, praised the former president for his leadership achievements in the country, adding that Obasanjo contributed immensely to his personal career.

“Things really happened during that period and there were a couple of difficult moments because 99 per cent of the people we arrested were Peoples Democratic Party members.

“He (Obasanjo) exercised self-restraint; he refused to interfere with the day-to-day running of the EFCC. Obasanjo is a living proof that hard work does not kill. I wish he would never retire. You can’t afford to retire.”

Similarly, a former Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe, while praising Obasanjo during the event, described the ex-president as “a bad man” who pushed everyone in his team to work hard.

“Baba is a bad man; even though he was the oldest in the team, he worked very hard and expected others to do as well. I told him I did not have as much strength as he would expect, Baba retorted, ‘Ole, ole!’ (lazybones; thief!).”

Buhari will probably win 2019 election, says Kachikwu

Buhari will probably win 2019 election, says Kachikwu

Ibeh Kachikwu, minister of petroleum resources, says President Muhammadu Buhari will probably win the 2019 presidential election.

Kachickwu said this while responding to a question from CNN anchor, Richard Quest, who has been in Nigeria.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Speaking on the diversification of Nigeria’s economy, the minister said the effort of the government in this regard was realistic, and that results would be evident in the next five or seven years.

“It is realistic. Five or seven years. Petroleum led us into this problem; it has to lead us out,” he said in response to a question from Quest.

On how far the current reforms in the petroleum sector are at the moment, Kachikwu said, “about 50 percent”.

Quest asked: “Is it likely, because within another year your president or the party will be fighting in an election, and pretty much you are already in an election mode?”, and Kachikwu responded: “Those of us in government are focused on getting work done; the president is probably going to win the election anyway.”

How Ribadu vowed to arrest Tafa Balogun in my office – Obasanjo

How Ribadu vowed to arrest Tafa Balogun in my office – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, at the weekend, spoke on the removal of former Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun, from office.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Obasanjo said he asked Tafa Balogun to tender his resignation letter after former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, threatened to arrest him during a face-off at the presidential villa.

Obasanjo said two independent security reports indicted the former police boss of massive corruption.

He spoke at the 80th birthday dinner organised in his honour by his former appointees under the aegis of “Political Children of Obasanjo” in Lagos.

Obasajo recalled that the first report by the Department of State Service (DSS) revealed that Balogun was looting police funds.

He said he immediately summoned Tafa Balogun to the State House and warned him about the indicting reports of his activities.

Obj, as fondly called, said Balogun denied all allegations and continued to steal money.

The former president added that few months later, another report by the EFCC detailed corrupt activities of the former IG.

“I called him and said, Tafa, why do you have to destroy your name and career even though you will forever enjoy your privilege and salary as a former IGP for life?”

“On a particular day, Balogun was at the villa to see me; Ribadu, was also around and threatened to arrest him over the report.

“I had a hunch that Nuhu may leak the report to the press as he was close to them. I immediately called Balogun to give his letter of resignation. I told him if I don’t get the letter in 30 minutes, I will dismiss you.”

Obasanjo recounted that while he asked the EFCC not to arrest Tafa in the villa, Ribadu told the ex-IG to his face that he would arrest him outside.

Obasanjo, however, expressed his joy seeing the gathering of his former “boys”, and asked those whom he stepped on their toes while working with them speak so that he could apologise.

“I will apologize if it is true, but if not, I will step on it further and even hard.”

In attendance were Akin Osuntokun, Dr. Doyin Okupe, Tonye Cole, Nuhu Ribadu, Uba Sani, Osita Chidoka, former governor of Osun State, Prince Oyinlola Olagunsoye; former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Senator Kola Bajomo, former Head of Service, Malam Yayale Ahmed, among many others.

Speaking, Okupe told the former president: “History is going to be positive on you for what you have done for Nigeria and Africa.”

Ribadu praised Obasanjo and added: “I would not have been what I am today without Baba”.

Bolaji Akinyemi: Under no circumstances should report of NIA probe be made public

Bolaji Akinyemi: Under no circumstances should report of NIA probe be made public

Bolaji Akinyemi, former minister of external affairs, says the report of the probe of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) must not be made public for security reasons.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the elder statesman highlighted what he considered some mistakes made by President Muhammadu Buhari while setting up a panel to investigate the monies recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Ayo Oke, director-general of NIA, who was suspended after the discovery, had said the money belong to his agency.

After suspending Oke on April 19, Buhari set up a three-man committee led by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, to investigate the allegations about the monies.

But Akinyemi believes that Buhari should have appointed someone with a history or experience in the operations of NIA as part of the panel.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

“When Ambassador Ayo Oke stepped forward to claim it on the part of the National Intelligence Agency, (NIA), alarm bells started to ring in my ears. It is one of the sacred traditions of the external intelligence trade to admit nothing and to deny nothing,” Akinyemi said.

“A saving grace emerged when the president set up the Osinbajo panel to untangle the web over the millions of dollars. But the president inadvertently made a mistake.

“He did not appoint anyone with a history of external intelligence experience into the panel. External Intelligence operations do not belong to the same security genre as domestic security forces such as the SSS, EFCC and the police.

“External intelligence officers, otherwise called spies, do not operate under the same operational penalties as domestic intelligence officers.

“Under no circumstances should the report of the panel in as far as it relates to the activities of the NIA be made public and no more leaks from the panel.”

Akinyemi said the exposure of the agency to the public could pose a serious threat to officers of the agency, noting that, “ normally, foreign intelligence activities are shrouded in secrecy, and not in the glare of publicity.”

He also faulted the move of the house of representatives the issue, highlighting the security implications.

“What has motivated me at this late stage to issue this release is the news that the house of representatives has now decided to institute its own inquiry to this peculiar mess. This is a dangerous move,” he said.

“The ultimate penalty for a foreign spy in most countries is death. Countries go to incredible lengths to hide the identities of their agents both domestic and foreign and their operations. No receipts get issued. Budgets are called black budgets because they are never publicly acknowledged.

“Now, the whole saga has made us a laughing stock in the world. Nigerian agents strewn all across Africa are now in dread of being exposed. Recruiting agents in future in Africa is going to be difficult out of fear of future exposure.

“Under no circumstances should the national assembly be allowed to conduct hearings into the NIA affair. The Osinbajo panel Report could be shared secretly with the president of the senate and the speaker of the house.

“Should any NIA officer be found culpable, he or she should be quietly eased out. Putting a foreign intelligence officer on trial in an open court is going to be disastrous to external national security interests.

“If there is no provision to put an intelligence officer on trial in a secret and special court, an executive bill should be sent to the national assembly to make provision for such.

“Under no circumstances should one security agency be allowed to move against another security agency especially one dealing with foreign intelligence, without the express permission of the president or in his absence the acting president. This should be without any publicity or fanfare.”

Akinyemi, a professor of political science and an expert in international affairs, law and diplomacy, served as a minister under the military administration of Ibrahim Babangida.

China deports U.S. citizen convicted of espionage

China deports U.S. citizen convicted of espionage

China has deported a U.S. citizen who was convicted of espionage after being held without trial for two years, removing a source of friction between Washington and Beijing.

Sandy Phan-Gillis was arrested in March 2015 while about to leave mainland China for the Chinese-ruled, former Portuguese colony of Macau.

A court on Tuesday ordered her deportation after sentencing her to three-and-a-half years in prison for espionage.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

She left China on Friday from the southern city of Guangzhou and arrived in Los Angeles on the same day, her husband said in a statement.

The Chinese government has not released details of the charges against Phan-Gillis.

Her lawyer said he could not reveal details of the case because it involved “state secrets”.

Her husband, Jeff Gillis, said China had accused Phan-Gillis of visiting the country twice on spy missions in 1996.

She was also accused of working with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to capture two Chinese spies in the U.S. and turn them into double agents.

The deportation came at a time of waning China-U.S. relations after U.S. President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Florida in early April.

In an interview Trump had called Xi a “good man” and praised him for his efforts to press North Korea to give up its development of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.

Negotiations to secure the release of Phan-Gillis intensified when Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited Beijing in March, according to the San Francisco-based Dui Hua Foundation.

“Sandy is overjoyed to be reunited with friends and family, and sends out her thanks to the many people who worked tirelessly for her release,” Gillis said (Reuters/NAN)

JUST IN: Fresh Revelation On Ikoyi Misery N15b EXPOSED, Buhari's NSA Involvement, How NIA Boss Tried To Play Smart

JUST IN: Fresh Revelation On Ikoyi Misery N15b EXPOSED, Buhari's NSA Involvement, How NIA Boss Tried To Play Smart

Fresh Revelation On Ikoyi N15b EXPOSED, Buhari's NSA Involvement

The Presidency has debunked the claim by the suspended Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ayo Oke, that the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, was aware of the N43.4m stashed away at a private apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos.

A government official told journalists on Saturday that in the first instance, "Oke did not brief the NSA at all about the existence of such funds-$289M- or the projects they were meant for when the Buhari administration took office in May 2015, even though the money had been released in March the same year.

The official stated: 'The NSA office only got its first knowledge of the existence of such funds during the work of the presidential committee that audited the Defense Equipment Procurement in the Armed Forces. The Committee had observed certain payments from the CBN to the NIA and raised questions drawing the attention of the NSA.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

'When the suspended DG of the NIA discovered that that Committee was raising questions and to forestall the NSA from "blowing the cover," he then gave his first report to the NSA on the existence of such funds and warned that the Committee's job does not cover the activities or the spendings of the NIA.

"The Presidential Committee on Audit of Defense Equipment Procurement, in the course of its assignment came across information that the NIA received a huge sum of money in early 2015 from the former President.

Based on this the NSA carried out a preliminary investigation during which the NIA claimed the money was released for some projects aimed at commencing the Agency's 30th anniversary. This was in January 2017."

'Subsequently, a team was constituted" to ascertain the situation. The first suspicion of a potential abuse was noticed at this stage, according to sources, especially considering the amount of money involved and the purposes stated.

"This was how the NSA and the Presidency learnt of the existence of such funds. We were not told by anyone in NIA until the Committee saw something, and raised a red flag.

However, when the embattled NIA top spy was now compelled to explain what was happening, "he still did not inform anyone in the Federal Government or presidency that he kept $43m of the said funds in cash at a private apartment anywhere in Lagos or any part of the country."

"This is the issue: the NSA was not told that NIA had this lump cash stashed away in the place it was eventually discovered by EFCC. In any case, extant rules are clear that such monies ought only to be placed in the NIA headquarters or in CBN vaults.

'There are also instances where CBN actually paid out some of the funds directly to some NIA contractors, raising questions why the suspended NIA needed to put aside such huge cash in a private apartment.

'The projects for which the former President approved the funds totaling $289m included two in Lagos whose cost were put at about $28m, which is way less than the $43m cash found in the Ikoyi apartment.

Sources explained further that as at January this year, funds for the Lagos projects had actually been released to the tune of $18m, meaning only about $10m was left to be paid four months ago, before $43m was found in the Lagos apartment recently.

"So let us even assume that the NIA DG wanted to keep funds in Lagos for the Lagos based projects, he did not need that much for the total of the Lagos projects at all.

And apart from that it is completely untenable to stash away agency money in a private apartment instead of keeping it with the CBN or inside the NIA head office where the money would be well-secured and its disbursement well protected. "

IG of Police wants to kill me – Wike

IG of Police wants to kill me – Wike

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has claimed that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, is after his life.

Wike stated this while speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Saturday.

The Governor said that the IG of Police, directed his crack team to invade his house in Asokoro, Abuja on Friday, supposedly acting on information from a whistle-blower.

“I want to reiterate, the Inspector-General of Police is after my life,” he said.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

Wike said the raid was a plot, to plant firearms, cash and other incriminating exhibits in his Abuja home.

“All attempts are being made so that they will go and plant either AK-47 or $1m in the governor’s house. They can even plant costly wrist watches as a propaganda tool.

“I said I have to let Nigerians know that this is not the way to go about in a democracy. Rather, this is an attempt to truncate democracy. That someone differs on issues does not mean you have to go after the person’s life,” he added.

Wike also dared the police to come to his home in Rivers to conduct their search, instead of his Abuja residence.

“Nigerians should be aware that should they raid my house in Abuja and claim they found anything, it is incorrect.

“I have not been going to Abuja, but I will be in Abuja to wait for them to see how they plan to plant guns in my house,” Wike said.

My Thoughts on Nigeria – Osita Chidoka

My Thoughts on Nigeria – Osita Chidoka

At independence, our leaders failed to define the qualities of an exceptional country so diverse yet so similar that other African countries can discern a Nigerian no matter the ethnic origin.

The emphasis was on replacing the colonial masters and enjoying the benefits of a distributional and extractive governance philosophy primarily designed to enrich the home government of the colonialist.

In adopting that philosophy without the administrative competence of the colonial administration, it was only a matter of time before the vacuous organizing principle of the new state led to Africa’s worst pogrom and civil war.

For More:Visit Us at Uju Ayalogu's Blog

The end of the civil war offered an opportunity for the winning coalition to redefine the organizing principle of the Nigerian state and propose new ideals upon which, a state exceptional in its combination of three strong and many other small ethnic groups that had overcome a civil war, can be founded.

Yet again we missed it. Administration after Administration we have failed to build a modern Nigeria based on ideals that derive from our essence and quest for nationhood.

Today, confronted by a dire economic situation; antagonised by separatist agitations and religion inspired terror; and challenged by weakening subnational governments and global hostility another opportunity presents itself to redefine the essence of the Nigerian State.

This redefinition is not all about restructuring (if we can agree on the definition) but may include it, it is not all about governance structure and distributional formula, though it may be an aftermath, it is principally about a union freely founded on ideals of respect for individual rights, freedom to achieve individual potential and respect for multi-cultural, multi-ethnic union that allows for unity in diversity indeed.

The Nigerian state so redefined and freely subscribed to by a majority would definitely endure and overcome all the challenges that plague any nation so constructed.

PDP crisis: Makarfi, others should form another party – Maidugu

PDP crisis: Makarfi, others should form another party – Maidugu

Barr. Bashir Maidugu, National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has admonished Senator Ahmed Makarfi, and others fighting the national chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, to form another party.

He said this in reaction to demand that since Sheriff seemed to be at loggerheads with some top party members, including governors, he should leave the party and form another platform.

Reacting, Maidugu said nothing like that will happen.

“He should leave the PDP when he’s the national chairman declared by the Court of Appeal? How can he leave the PDP?

“Those who do not want him should go and form another party, we don’t have any problem with that. We’re right now operating from Wadata Plaza (party national headquarters),” he told Daily Trust.

Asked if Sheriff really meant well for the PDP, the legal practitioner said the former governor or Borno State wouldn’t have accepted the Governor Seriake Dickson’s report if he was working against the party.

“It is those who do not mean well for the PDP that are trying to sabotage the Appeal Court judgement. They are trying to sabotage our judiciary and think they own it.

“They went to the Supreme Court and keep telling people that they are going to get judgement there as if the Supreme Court is their house boy or it belongs to them. No, it is the Supreme Court of Nigeria”, he said.
