A former gubernatorial candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the 2011 elections in Abia state, Prince Paul Ikonne, has cautioned a former governor of the state, Orji Uzor Kalu, to guide his utterances and conducts.

Ikonne who addressed a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, July 5, stated that the utterances and activities of Kalu are affecting the APC's electoral chances in the state.

We gathered that Kalu had boasted at a recent event in the state, that he brought development to all nook and crannies of the state while presided over its affairs.

Kalu was the governor of the state from 1999 to 2007.

Ikonne said: “What we need now in Abia is not confusion. What we need now in Abia is not distraction. What we need is not to scare people away from joining the party.

“We need men and women of integrity and honour that will help us build the party, but it is unfortunate that the former governor who knows how he governed Abia and Abians know he governed Abia has been going about saying things that are not.”

He described Kalu's statement as disappointing, adding that, “if Abia is backward, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu laid the foundation and has taken Abia sixteen years backward.”

He advised the former governor to stop making some such statements publicly, stressing that he should be in a sober mood.

“He should embark on a mission to reconcile with virtually with everybody, because 95.5% of Abians are not happy with the way he handled the state and the foundation he laid in Abia state,” he added.

Last year, Ikonne dismissed Kalu's defection to the APC, stressing that the former governor joined the party to cause confusion.

He further said the former governor has nothing to offer the APC politically.
