Mideast Crisis: Palestine Wants U.S. To Clarify Position

Palestine expects the U.S. to clarify its position on a solution to the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict as all the statements made by Washington so far lack clarity, Palestinian Ambassador to Turkey Faed Mustafa said.

President Donald Trump’s adviser Jared Kushner said on Monday that the U.S. administration might not have anything “unique” to offer to settle the crisis.

Kushner’s statement, which he allegedly made while speaking to a group of congressional interns.

Mustafa told Sputnik:“all these months the American administration was listening to our demands and we explained everything to them.

“Until now we have not received from them any clear plan about their coming actions … We also have heard from Trump himself that he would do everything to find historical resolutions for this conflict.

“So, the United States is sending unclear messages. We think that it is time for the American administration to clarify their position.”

In May, Trump visited Israel as part of his first official overseas trip in a bid to promote peace between Israelis and Palestinians and contribute to agreements between the two sides.

On June 21, Kushner and Trump’s Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during a trip to Jerusalem and Ramallah.

Kushner’s objective was to reaffirm the White House’s commitment to the goal of a lasting peace deal between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The most recent round of peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians were initiated by the United States in mid-2013 but ended in an impasse almost in 2014.

The international community considers that the ongoing conflict must be resolved on the basis of the two-state solution formula, which prescribes the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

The international community also supports a sovereign Palestinian state and its coexistence with Israel within the borders set prior to the Six Day War in 1967, when Israel seized the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Golan Heights and the Sinai Peninsula.
