Group blasts IG of police over statement on Benue attack

- An NGO has called fr the police IG, Ibrahim Idris to be sacked

- The group described IGP Idris' statement on the Benue killings as irresponsible

- It claimed that no investigation was done before the IGP's claim that the Benue crisis is a communal clash and not herdsmen invasion

A group, the Global Peace and Life Rescue Initiative (GOPRI) has called for the immediate termination of the appointment of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, over his statement on the killings in Benue state.

Recall that there were earlier reports that the IGP refered to the attack in Benue state as a communal clash between communities and not herdsmen attacks as widely believed.

The statement by the IGP has since raised dust among the youths of the state who considered his words as "irresponsible", "unprofessional" and "misleading".

The executive director of GOPRI, Mr Melvin Ejeh, while addressing the youths in North Central said the group disagree with the IGP's conclusion.

He said: “We were shocked when we heard the statement emanating from the IGP himself and wondered what the future holds for the country with Idris as our IGP. This is an indication of the biased route the investigation into the unprovoked killings will take.

“The statement is capable of causing serious breach of peace and a threat to National security if nothing is done by the Commander in Chief. The people of Benue state and the entire middle belt might regard this statement as the presidency’s official position.

“While we as a group are not trying to conclude that the attackers were Fulani herdsmen since investigations are still on going and because we are respecters of laws and due process, we find the statement of the IGP as too sudden, hasty and disturbing, suggesting that investigations into the gruesome murder of innocent Nigerians in Benue state can never be fair under Idris kpotun as IGP.

The IGP should bury his head in shame now that the leader of Miyetti Allah cattle Breeders in Benue State admitted openly that the Fulani attacks on the state were in retaliation for alleged stealing of their cows."

We previously reported that Garus Gololo, a leader of Miyetti Allah cattle breeders in Benue state said the attack on some communities in the state, which led to the killings of innocent Nigerians, was in retaliation for alleged stealing of their cows.

Gololo told BBC News Pidgin that trouble started when some people attacked Fulani herdsmen who were relocating with their cows from Benue state.

He said as they were relocating over 1000 of their cows were stolen at Nengere.
