It is mandatory for every citizen and legal resident of Nigeria to enrol for the National Identification Number (NIN).

The process is the same whether you choose the self-service or you require an assisted service and it is FREE.
The National Identification Number (NIN) is a set of numbers given to Nigerian citizens upon the recording of an individual’s demographic data and capture of the ten (10) fingerprints, head-to-shoulder facial picture and digital signature, which are all used to cross-check existing data in the National Identity Database to confirm that there is no previous entry of the same data.
Once this (de-duplication) process is completed the data is then stored with a unique NIN that was assigned to it. The NIN once issued to a person cannot be used again, (that is, it cannot be issued to another person even if the previous owner is dead). The NIN ties all records about a person in the database and is used to check the identity verified.
1. Visit the NIMC website: http://www.nimc.gov.ng/ to access the Enrollment Form
2. Fill the Enrollment Form online with all your details and print out a summary sheet with a 2D Barcode and Registration Identification Number.
3. Go to the enrollment center, where an enrollment officer scans the barcode to pull up your information from the database. List of NIMC enrollment centers
4. You should verify and confirm the enrollment data on the system.
5. Your headshot photograph, fingerprints and signature would then be captured.
6. Submit your supporting documents for scanning.
7. Your enrollment is acknowledged where two slips would be given to you. (a) Transaction Slip (b) NIN Slip indicating completion of enrollment.
7 .Supporting Documents
You are required to bring along any of the following as a proof of your identity for your enrollment.
1. Old National ID card.
2. Valid Driver’s license.
3. Valid International passport.
4. Voter’s ID card.
5. Govt. staff ID card.
6. State of origin certificate.
7. Birth certificate/declaration of age
Eligibility
Individuals from 16 years and above and legal citizens of Nigeria are eligible to enrol for their NIN number. Anyone below the age of 16 years (minors) can also enrol for the NIN with the consent of their parents or legal guardians.
Minors need to be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians to the enrolment centres before they can be enrolled. Minors also come with their supporting identification documents like everyone else, but their parents or guardians must provide their own NINs for verification.
However, minors are not issued with the National Identity cards until they attain the age of 16.
