The Oxford Circus Tube station in London, was evacuated after smoke was seen pouring out of a train – and two passengers were rushed to hospital, Daily Star UK reports.

A Tube carriage caught fire around 9am – causing a mass evacuation which witnesses described as "terrifying".

The train pulled in to Oxford Circus and passengers ran to safety as an alarm sounded and smoke quickly started filling the station.

Smoke was seen billowing out of the train and the smell of burned plastic was reported by witnesses.

Commuters were pictured shielding their faces from thick smoke which billowed through their carriage.

Witnesses said there was wildspread panic and the station was closed.

Tube passenger Daniel Wiliams tweeted: "The train I was just on at Oxford Circus set fire and the carriage filled up with smoke. All had to run out. Madness.

"Most reacted in a very London way haha – just kept quiet and sat there til we could leave. Some were panicking as you'd expect. Bit surreal."

Rachel Thompson said: "Don't go near Oxford Circus. I just got evacuated from the station. F****** terrifying."

Witness Phil Ford said: "Green Park is absolute hell because Oxford Circus is closed and we just went through Oxford Circus and it stinks of smoke."

While Megan Affonso said: "DON'T use the #jubileeline or try going into #oxfordcircus, a train has gone up in flames."

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said four were treated at the scene and two taken to hospital.

He said: "We were called at 8.53am today to reports of an incident on board a Bakerloo line train at Oxford Circus tube station.

"We sent an ambulance crew, our Hazardous Area Response Team and an incident response officer to the scene, with the first of our medics arriving in less than five minutes.

"We treated four patients at the scene for smoke inhalation and have taken two to hospital as a precaution."

A spokesman for Transport for London advised travellers to avoid the area.

He said at the time: "The station is currently closed due to a fire alert, there is no one in the station, all the lines that run through the station aren't stopping there.

"People should use the TfL website to find alternate routes."

The station has since reopened. The London Fire Brigade and British Transport Police are at the scene.

Police said the cause of the fire is not "being treated as suspicious".

TfL said it was an "electrical fault".
