Ortom imposes dusk-to-dawn curfew in Gboko

Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State on Tuesday imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Gboko town with immediate effect until further notice.

Ortom through his Special Adviser, Media and ICT, Tahav Agerzua, stated that the curfew which will last between 6pm and 6am daily was meant to curb security threats in the area.

He said those exempted from the curfew are essential workers such as hospital staff and others who show convincing identification.

Our reporter gathered that unknown gunmen killed at least five people in the early hours of Tuesday, though it was not yet clear at the time of this report what exactly went wrong as both resident and travellers were said to be scampering for safety.

While some people opined that it was a fight between herders and farmers, others alleged that rival cultists are having a field day.

The State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, told our correspondent that he would speak later today about the incident as he traveled to Gboko to ascertain things for himself.

But, Ortom has directed security agencies particularly the police and the army to provide round the clock surveillance in the affected town so as to forestall a breach of peace.

The governor further appealed to residents of Gboko to comply with the curfew in their own interest as security operatives have been directed to arrest those found moving about in the town during the period of the curfew.
