After the massive inferno in Jikwoyi, a surburb of Abuja attracting commerce and trading, victims of the fire incident said that properties in the estimation of nearly a billion Naira may have been lost to the fire, even as the victims recounts their losses.

It would be recalled that properties and goods worth millions went up in flames with no less than ten families displaced and shop owners recounting loses after the fire outbreak in the early hours of Saturday, last weekend, in Jikwoyi, FCT.

According to eyewitnesses account, fire was noticed in one of the shops by some early risers while going to church for vigil at about 3am on Saturday. They said while it was possible that the fire might have been caused by faulty wiring or sparks, a generator already loaded with fuel in one of the shops was believed to have further triggered the fire.

A victim, Mr Julius David, said he lost all his valuables in the fire. “I can’t really recall clearly what happened. They brought our light late at night and some hours later, I started smelling some burnt items and I opened my kitchen in three different occasions to check where the smell was coming from, but didn’t discover where the smell was coming from.

“I walked around to be sure. But at about 3am, a security man started hitting the gate shouting that we should come out. That was how we all came out, but then the flame was out of control. We could not go in again to take anything.

“We could not call fire service because we left our phones inside the house. I rushed to a man driving along the street and begged him to call the fire service, which he did but they didn’t pick. At this time people started coming trying to help break some of the shops that were not affected then but they could only do little.’’

“My wife had a one week old baby and we were all in the bedroom when we heard the shout of fire. My apartment was almost affected but for the help of some neighbours, till the arrival of fire service,” he recounted.
