Murder of Enugu lawyer: Police arrests community leader, three others

The police in Enugu State have arrested the town union president of Okwojo, Ngwo in Udi L.G.A of Enugu State and three other natives of same community for their alleged involvement in the killing of one late Barr. Ejimofor Ozongwu.
Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu (DSP) who confirmed the arrest on Monday gave the names of the suspects as Denis Ozongwu, Sebastian Offor and two others whose names were yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

The vibrant lawyer was murdered in his hometown Okwojo on December 23rd.

It was gathered that the deceased, who is the Executive Secretary Enugu State Committee on creation of Adada State, was lured from where he was attending a wedding in Enugu, ambushed and murdered in cold blood.

The police spokesperson disclosed that the President General of the Okwojo town union Denis Ozongwo had claimed that he was shot by the deceased.

He, however, dismissed the claims, explaining that investigations suggested that the wound the suspect sustained came after the deceased had been killed.

Amaraizu disclosed that the manhunt for the other perpetrators of the dastardly act was on, assuring that the police were working round the clock to apprehend the culprits and all those who had a hand in the murder.

Already the people of Okwojo in their numbers led by the traditional Prime Minister Ozo Ramsey Onyia has paid a solidarity/condolence visit to the family washing their hands off the act which they described as an abomination.

Ozo Onyi, who spoke during the visit also noted that those who may have been involved remained persona non-grata in the community.

He described the deceased as the only practicing lawyer in the community who had borne the legal burden of his people while alive.

Meanwhile, the brother to the deceased, Eric Ozongwu linked the death of his elder brother to a certain land tussle where the late lawyer had been farming for more than 30 years.

He vowed that the family will put all within its reach to ensure that those behind the murder were brought to book stressing that “Ejimofor’s death will not be in vain.”
