Former minister petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, could face a jail term of 12-15 years in prison if found guilty of multiple counts of fraud.

Former minister of petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, could face a jail term of between 12-15 years in prison if found guilty of fraud which reportedly occurred while she served as minister.

Disclosing this on Tuesday, July 18, the personal assistant to the president on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, said the former minister is also expected to name over 200 accomplice who connived, helped or participated in one of the biggest oil fraud Nigeria has ever had.

The presidential aide in a Facebook post titled, The Biggest Oil Industry Heist, Ever, cited a news report which stated that that Diezani is not prepared to go down alone as she is preparing to name all her accomplices.

According to the post, Diezani and her cronies have fraudulently milked Nigeria about $11Billion from offshore processing agreements (OPAs) popularly known as oil swap.

The reports stated that within the period Diezani headed the petroleum sector, Nigeria lost about $50 billion.

The report also stated that some of those who are expected to feature prominently and perhaps go down with Diezani are: Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu, (AKA A.A Oil), Dan Etete, Tope Shonubi, Tonye Cole, Ade Odunsi, Tunde Ayeni, Idahosa Wells Okunbo, Walter Wagbatsoma, Benny Peters, Jide Omokore and Kola Aluko among others.

Meanwhile, the post by the presidential aide has generated reactions from some Nigerians on Facebook, who attributed the hardship in the country to the conduct of Diezani and others in that category.

Angered by the news report, some persons called for strong punitive action to be taken against the accused for the huge embezzlement.

Meanwhile, two allies of former minister petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, have approached the Federal High Court in Lagos to stay further proceedings in a suit filed against them by the federal government.

The federal government sued Kola Aluko and Jide Omokore last year alongside their companies, Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Limited and Atlantic Energy Brass Development Limited, the Punch reports.

Counsel to the federal government, Dipo Okpeseyi (SAN), in an affidavit attached to the suit filed alleged that the defendants unlawfully diverted a profit of about $1.8bn due to the NNPC on crude oil which they lifted and sold.
