N12bn alleged fraud uncovered in Ministry of Power By Dino Melaye' Senate to investigate

Senate to investigate ‘monumental’ fraud uncovered in power ministry

- The Nigerian Senate is set to look into an alleged case of fraud in the Federal Ministry of Works, Power and Housing

- The alleged fraud was brought to the attention of the upper chamber by Senator Dino Melaye

- The Senate has promised to look critically into the alleged monumental fraud which started sometime last year.

The Nigerian Senate is set to look into an alleged case of fraud in the federal ministry of works, power and housing.

The alleged fraud was brought to the attention of the upper chamber by Dino Melaye, an All Progressives Congress (APC) senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the upper chamber.

Citing order 42 of the Senate rules, Melaye brought said the alleged monumental fraud in the power sector started sometime last year.

He referred to a project in the Ministry of Power called FAST POWER.

He said the Senate needs to ask questions about the project, adding that there’s no appropriation by the Senate for the project and the ministry has spent $35 million (about N12 billion) so far.

Responding, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said the order cited by Melaye would come as a motion on another legislative day.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari wrote to the National Assembly today, Thursday, November 2, notifying them of his intention to present the estimates of the 2018 budget on Tuesday, November 7.

We had earlier reported that the Nigerian Senate tasked the Federal Executive Council to ensure that the 2018 budget is passed in good time to allow for full implementation.

The Senate also advised Aso Rock to make use of operating circulars in revenue generation in some government agencies.

The Senate added that the executive should block all leakages of operational surpluses in all ministries, departments and parastatals of the federal government.
