The batch B set of the National Youth Service Corps Service (NYSC) due to leave orientation camp tomorrow, Tuesday, November 16, have been forced to remain another week.
This is reportedly so that the corpers can be used as electoral officers for the upcoming Kogi state elections. The youth corpers were toldd about it on Saturday, November 14, just a day before the end of their camping exercise.
According to Linda Ikeji, their deployment letters to their place of primary assignment will also be withheld until the week is over. There will be lectures anchored by the INEC on how to go about the elections. Then corps members will be sent to various polling booths in different local government areas during the election period.
However, there are several questions arising from this development. Can NYSC actually force corpers to participate during the elections? Is something like this supposed to be happening? Is the director general aware? Why did it take the state government so long to inform the youth corpers about the one-week extra duties?
Balikisu Omolabake Temitope Lamina, a graduate who was observing the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, died recently in a traffic accident.
The young woman was said to have been returning to school after travelling to rejoice with her family on the safe return of her mother from the holy land for this year’s pilgrimage, where hundreds were killed in various disasters.
