PDP Stalwart Criticises Party Chairman, Demands Apology

PDP Stalwart Criticises Party Chairman, Demands Apology

Prince Afoke Okporua, a Niger Delta youth and activist, has described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) re-branding conference as a failure.

In a statement released to journalists in Ado Ekiti yesterday, November 15, he described the conference which held in Abuja last week as reception to celebrate mediocrity and reward political naivety, This Day reports.

Okporua, a PDP stalwart in Bayelsa state said the conference which had the goal of re-positioning and restructuring the party for effectiveness and political vibrancy ahead of 2019, ended without achieving the much anticipated expectation.

“Political parties’ re-branding entails overhauling aimed at attaining collectivism, correction for the purpose of appealing to aggrieved persons, discussing with the intention to promote inclusion and restoration and investigating so as to ascertain facts for a great leap.

“However, the re-branding conference ended without any of the aforementioned being realised. The conference could be likened to a gathering of minute political characters sourcing for media attention to gain relevance, promote verbal promiscuity and squander the resources of the party,” he said.

According to him, the conference failed to address important issues affecting the party such as the trampling on the party constitution by the acting chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, the Ekweremadu report on why the party performed abysmally at the 2015 polls, the biometric registration which was initiated and handed over to Chief Raymond Dokpesi, zoning and the role of the youths issues.

Okporua also demanded an apology from Secondus for saying the candidature of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the last presidential election, was responsible for the party’s failure.

He said: “Secondus must apologise to Nigerians for killing the party via his Mugabe tendencies and Gbagbo inclinations. Nowhere in the world do people talk about party re-branding without re-course to the fundamental issues.

“One, the acting chairman’s position for this long is an affront on the party’s constitution and any attempt to hold a convention to elect a new chairman in March in March, 2016 without the North-east completing their tenure is fraudulent and will adversely affect PDP.

“Saying that PDP made a mistake by fielding Jonathan is an insult on the political sensibility of the South-south and we demand apology for this.”

Dokpesi, on Tuesday, November 10, said PDP made a mistake by allowing former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for re-election in the last presidential election.

However, Dokpesi’s remark was countered by Olisa Metuh, the national publicity secretary of the PDP, who said the statement did not in any way represent the official position of the party.
