There was near-pandemonium at the Jumat Mosque when worshipers who had arrived early for the Friday prayers spotted what they believed was a bomb in a bag placed in a corner of the mosque premises.

A little boy was said to have first seen the bag and drew the attention of elderly people to it, causing near-pandemonium. Some of the worshipers who arrived when those that first noticed the bag were scampering to safety reportedly kept their distance from where the others were running from.

However men of the Police who arrived the mosque on time stopped the incident from getting out of hand by cordoning off the whole place.

Men of the Police Special anti-Bomb unit were said to have removed the bag to the nearby Central Police station where it was properly scrutinised.

It was learnt that the police discovered that the bag only contained some personal effects of a yet to be identified person. The same Friday the police security attached to the mosque were reported to have stopped a would be worshiper who tried to enter the mosque with a bag. Since insurgency started in parts of the north the police had forbidden the entering of any mosque with luggage no matter how small

According to a dependable Police source, when the security men tried to stop him from entering the mosque with the bag the man dressed in white caftan tried to force his way into the mosque before he was overpowered and arrested.

The Police later took the man and the bag to the Police headquarters for interrogation. Police Public Relations Officer ASP Bala Elikana when contacted confirmed the two incidents.

Elikana said the man arrested would be properly screened to determine if he was a genuine worshipper or ‘if he came on a different mission’. He explained that the first bag was discovered to contain some personnel effects of the owners yet to be known.

The Police spokesman commended the vigilance of faithful who raised the alarm saying that if the bag had contained any explosive device the alarm would have assisted the police to stop what would have been a disaster.
