Court Of Appeal Upheld Election Of Governor Umahi

Court Of Appeal Upheld Election Of Governor Umahi

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state

The Election of Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state has been upheld by Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu on Friday, December 11.
The gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Edward Nkwegu had gone to court to challenge the electoral victory of the the governor.

Earlier in October, Ebonyi State Governorship Election Tribunal had dismissed the petition by Nkwegu challenging the declaration of Governor Umahi as winner of April 11 governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for lack of merit and inability of the petitioner to prove his case over allegations of corrupt practices and criminalities as  presented in the petition, The Nation reports.

The LP candidate was not satisfied with the judgment of the tribunal headed to appeal court.

Nkwegu’s lawyer, U.N Udechukwu (SAN) had asked the Court of Appeal to set  aside the verdict of the tribunal stating the judgment was a grave error of law.

He prayed the court to cancelled the election that brought Umahi to power and therefore order for a fresh election to be conducted arguing that the governorship poll was marred with irregularities. The court upheld the decision of the tribunal declaring that the election of the governor as is valid.

Meanwhile, Governor Umahi had shocked senior civil servants as he reportedly sacked all of the state permanent secretaries.

The retirement was made public via a statement signed by the governor’s principal secretary, Clement Nweke, and made available to newsmen in Abakaliki.
