Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has warned airline operators and pilots to adhere strictly to the approved weather minima advice during the period of hazardous weather.
NCAA in a statement issued in Lagos and signed by its Director-General, Capt. Muhtar Usman stated that the warning became necessary due to the forecast of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET.
NCAA said NIMET forecasted that there would be occurrence of moderate to severe outbreaks of dust in the country during the harmattan period, which started in November and is expected to last till March next year.
NCAA in the statement informed that severe outbreaks of dusts could reduce atmospheric visibility significantly and thereby impacted negatively on flight operations.
The authority, in the statement explained that in order to avoid major incidents or accidents during the period, airline operators and pilots were expected to comply with all safety rules.
The statement urged pilots to ensure that adequate departure, en route and destination weather information were obtained from NIMET office prior to flight operations and exercise maximum restraint when adverse weather was observed or forecasted.
Usman also urged operators and pilots to ensure that flight operations were scheduled with adequate weather information from NIMET to minimise delay or cancellation, adding that all concerned were required to always strictly comply with laid down regulations.
The statement however, appealed to the travelling public to exercise some restraints whenever their flight was delayed or cancelled by airlines due to unfavourable weather conditions.
