Briefing the press on Yola on Friday, Malam Yakubu Kibo, head of the state NDLEA branch, qualified the seizure as one of the largest made by them in 2015.
Serious intelligence and surveillance campaign by the officers of the command culminated on the 28th November, 2015, with the officers raiding a store at the Jimeta modern market. Two persons have been apprehended in connection to the case.
“At the end of the search, assorted brands of Tramadol tablets 225mg, 200mg and 125mg [a narcotic analgesic] were recovered concealed in twenty cartons weighing 905 kilograms,” Mr Kibu reported.
“Pentazocin injections [psychotropic substance] concealed in two cartons weighing 23 kilograms, bringing the total to 928 kilograms.”
The seized substances are habit-forming drugs and were meant for consumption within the state and its environs, Kibo said, adding that the drugs would have had severe consequences on the health of people consuming them.
Dr Jesophat Akabuike, state Commissioner for Health, speaking on Saturday on behalf of Sule Momodu, the state NDLEA commander, said the most dangerous drugs circulated in Nigeria are produced in Anambra state, including methamphetamine.
Dr Akabuike spoke at the Women’s Development Centre in Awka at an event to mark 2015 United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse And Trafficking.
At least 122 drug suspects have been arrested between January and June 2015, with 114 of them being men, and eight women.
A total of 110.624 kg of illicit drugs have been seized during the period: 107.26kg of cannabis sativa known as marijuana, 138.2 grammes of cocaine, 100.54 grammes of heroine, 2.615kg of liquid methamphetamine, and 510 grammes of solid methamphetamine.
Dr Akabuike praised the state governor, Willie Obiano, for the support he had given to the agency, and restated the state’s commitment to the fight against crime in the state, including drug abuse and trafficking.
