Soft drinks may cause girls to start their periods early, scientists say

The findings were called ‘statistically significant’

Soft drinks may cause girls to start their periods early, putting them at an increased risk of developing breast cancer later in life, scientists say.

The research, which was conducted at the Harvard Medical School, found that girls who drank more than one-and-a-half sugary drinks a day had their first period 2.7 months before those drinking two a week or fewer.

And the findings were called ‘unexpected’ but ‘strongly statistically significant’ by Cambridge University’s Dr Ken Ong, as girls who get their first period just one year earlier are estimated to have an increased risk of developing breast cancer later in life by five percent.

The study tested girls aged nine to 14.
