A Nigerian military general receives N20.69 m annually - Report

– A new report on the annual salaries of military officials have been released by the Economic Intelligence

– The report showed that an army general, a navy admiral or an air force air chief marshal receives N20.69 million annually

A new report on the take home pay of military officials have been released.

The report compiled by the Economic Intelligence, a financial magazine shows that the annual salary of an army general, an admiral in the navy and an air chief marshal in the Nigerian air force is penned at N20,691,400 million annually.

The trio, who hold executive positions as the chief of defence staff and are also referred to as four star generals receive a monthly salary of N1.72 million, the report on consolidated armed forces salary structure (CONAFSS) said.

While these top brass official go home with huge amount, a recruit or trainee in the military – either air force, army or navy – receive N122,848 annually.

Also, a private soldier, ordinary seaman an aircraftsman/ woman receives N639,990 while a lance corporal and seaman get N661,732 annually.



The salaries of these officials does not include some allowances especially when on special assignments, military operations, foreign missions, duty tour allowance and estacodes.

The report in its entity also shows that while the difference between the salary of a recruit and a private soldier is a whooping N500,000, while that between a private and a lance corporal is N21,000.

although no reason was given for this huge disparity, further check showed that a corporal, an able seaman and its equivalent in the air force receives N693,426 annually while a sergeant – whether in the army, air force and landing seaman in the navy – gets N809,327 annually.

That is a gap of N115,000 from their immediate junior colleagues.

Digging deep, a staff sergeant – and its equivalent in the navy and air force – receives N1,019,226, while a warrant officer’s annual salary is N1,192,499 with a difference of N173,000.

Going a step ahead, a master warrant officer (MWO) in the three arms of the forces go home with annual salaries of N1,962,697.00, while army warrant officer, navy warrant officer and that of the air force warrant officers (WOs) take home N2,061,520.00 with a gap of about N98,000.

Meanwhile, those in training as cadet officers go home with a paltry N534,773.



However, for the commissioned officers – a second lieutenant in the army, mid-shipman in the navy and pilot officer in the air-force – have an annual salary of N2,245,909, while the next senior rank of lieutenant, sub-lieutenant and flying officer receives N2,620,801 with a disparity of N374,000.

Furthermore, a captain in the army, lieutenant in the navy and flight Lieutenant in the air-force go home with N2,789,818, while an army major, lieutenant commander and wing Commander has N2,976,052 annually with a difference of about N186,000.00 from its juniors.

A lieutenant colonel, commander or wing commander has an annual salary of N3,895,033, which when compared with that of a major has a huge difference of N918,000.

The gap also exists between lieutenant colonel and colonel, whose annual salary is N4,231,579 with a difference of N336,546.



Also, a brigadier general’s (the one star generals) have an annual salary of N8,134,745, with a difference of N3,900,000 when compared to a colonel’s salary of N4,231,579.

Coming to the two stars major generals, rear admirals or air vice marshals, they all go home with N16,516,124 annually; that is a whopping difference of N8,381,379 from that of a junior brigadier general.

Meanwhile, a lieutenant general, vice admiral and air marshal ( the three star generals) – also the three service chiefs – have annual salaries of N17,837,414 with a difference of N2.8 million from that of their immediate seniors.

Meanwhile, recall that many army generals, including the past chief of defense staff, Alex Badeh, a former chief of air staff, Mohammed Umar among many others are currently facing criminal charges bordering on money laundering, criminal abuse of public office and funds in different courts in Nigeria.
