Annkio Briggs, a highly respected Niger Delta activist based in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, has come hard on Governor Nyesom Wike over a statement credited to him in Sokoto state at the weekend.

Wike was reported to have said that the interest of Nigerians and Africans will be better served with Nigeria remaining as one strong and united nation.

According to reports, he said: “Leaders and people of Nigeria will always strive to defend the unity of Nigeria. This is because to them the country remaining as one individual entity is non-negotiable and of paramount importance.

“We cannot run away from this country. The unity of Nigeria is very, very paramount. The unity of this country is non-negotiable. So I cannot see us in a divided country. No way. We stand for the unity of this country.”

He made the statement on Sunday, January 1, 2017 when he paid a visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar 111 in Sokoto state.

But Annkio Briggs, who said Wike is her governor and that she supports his government without apology, rained knocks on Wike, insisting that the unity of Nigeria is negotiable as no governor has right to decide the fate of the people of Nigeria but Nigerians themselves.

The activist, who has championed various causes for the liberation of the Niger Delta, said majority of Niger Delta people would go for referendum to decide the fate of Nigeria, adding that the unity of Nigeria is subject to negotiation.

For her, to negotiate a new Nigeria is a task that must be done, maintaining that Governor Wike made a political statement saying: “Governor Wike of Rivers state is a politician, and like every other elected politician, he has sworn an oath, to uphold and protect the constitution of Nigeria and based on that oath even if he wanted to do otherwise, he can never say anything less than what he said in Sokoto.

“No president or governor that has emerged under a political platform in Nigeria will call for the break-up of Nigeria, only the people of Nigeria can call for the break-up of Nigeria or demand to leave peacefully.

“As a Rivers state indigene and as a Niger Deltan, l will rather that my state and region keep the resources in Rivers state and Niger Delta and pay tax to the federal government, or that we agree to restructure Nigeria along the lines of justice, equity and regionalism.

“The truth is no one person, governor or state can achieve our freedom, justice and equity alone, they have to work together, since the federal government is using the 1999 constitution to work against us, we the people have to work together to achieve what is best for us, our region and our future”.

According to her, no president since 1960 or governor since the creation of states has said anything outside of what Governor Wike said to the Sultan of Sokoto about the Niger Delta people.

Briggs added that the 1999 constitution, the policies of the federal government and the power brokers have consistently ensured that since after the end of the Biafra war they keep the Niger Delta and Igbo nationalities politically and economically enslaved, using the resources of the region against the people.
