Police reveal how Nigerian Navy 2 two-star general Ikoli died

The police has contradicted accounts by naval officers that Rear Admiral Daniel Ikoli who was found dead at his Apapa residence on April 5, was assassinated.

The Lagos state police command has contradicted accounts by naval officers that Rear Admiral Daniel Ikoli who was found dead at his Apapa residence on April 5, was assassinated.

The Lagos state police commissioner, Fatai Owoseni on Tuesday, April 11, ruled out assassination in the case, insisting that preliminary investigation conducted on the death the rear admiral revealed that he killed himself, Guardian reports.

We recall that Ikoli, a two-star general of the Nigerian Navy was said to have shot himself in the chest after firing two previous shots that hit the wall and the television set in his bedroom.

Until his death, the late rear admiral was the Fleet Commander at Western Naval Command, Lagos.

He was also a former member of the presidential committee on audit of defense equipment Procurement (CADEP).

Navy authoritative had said Ikoli may have been assassinated as he had no cause to kill himself.

But Owoseni, at briefing held at the police command headquarters, Ikeja, ruled out assassination.

He however revealed that three bullets were fired at the home of the late rear admiral on the day he died.

Owoseni said while investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ikoli’s death was ongoing, detectives were putting together exhibits recovered at the crime scene.

He said: “Investigation is still ongoing. Detectives are trying to put together bits and pieces of information and exhibits gathered.

The police boss said what was reported to the police was a case of deliberate killing of oneself and not assassination.

“The officers that responded said the pistol that killed Ikoli was not found on his chest as insinuated. The pistol is in our custody. However, all the things found in his apartment on the day of the incident will form preliminary report," Owoseni said.

The police also expressed the willingness to carry out an autopsy on the body of the deceased.

However, friends of Ikoli are demanding ballistics analysis of the pistol found in Ikoli’s apartment to ascertain if the gun actually fired the bullets extracted from the deceased.

In another news item, It is reported that the chief of army staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, has said it is unprofessional for service personnel to resort to the social media to disclose classified information or express grievances when the army has well established channels for addressing complaints.

Buratai, who made the statement when he declared open a 3-day workshop on “Office Management and Document Security’’ for Nigerian army officers in Abuja on Monday, April 10, described officers who engaged in such act as misguided.

He said to check the misuse of social media, he had initiated a process that could lead to the establishment of a directorate to focus solely on the management of the social media in the service.
