Attacked assistant police commissioner dies in Delta

An Assistant Commissioner of Police and Commander, Ughelli Area Police Command, Usman Ndanbabo, who was attacked by gunmen in Ughelli, Delta State, on Sunday night, has reportedly died of gun shots injuries sustained during the attack.

Ndanbabo, who hails from Niger State, gave up the ghost on Tuesday morning  after the state Commissioner of Police, Zanna Ibrahim, had earlier told The PUNCH that the injuries were not life threatening.

The victim, who was rushed to Lily Hospital in Warri, was reported to have undergone a series of surgeries, after which he was said to have regained consciousness.

Security sources told our correspondent that the deceased was shot at close range in his stomach and back near his spinal cord by the hoodlums.

 It was learnt that the late ACP managed to speak with the police commissioner when he visited him on Monday evening in the hospital.

At dependable source at the hospital where Ndanbabo was receiving treatment also confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

It was gathered that the remains of the late Area Commander had been moved to Minna, his hometown, in Niger State, for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The deadly attack on Sunday marked the second time the late ACP would be attacked since he assumed office at the command.

He was attacked by heavily-armed Fulani herdsmen when he led over 60 policemen to raid a farmland being forcefully occupied by herdsmen at Ohoro community in Ughelli North.

The state police commissioner, when contacted on Tuesday for confirmation, said he could not talk at the time of filing this report.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed that Ndanbabo died on Tuesday morning.
