Why PDP may settle for Makarfi for presidency 2019

It was gathered that while the PDP has zoned its presidential candidate for 2019 to the north, its national chairman has been reserved for the southwest region.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have settled for the current chairman of the caretaker committee, Ahmed Makarfi as its presidential flag bearer for the 2019 general elections.

The Point reports that a powerful group within the PDP have begun secret campaigns for 2019 presidency on behalf of Makarfi, a former Kaduna state governor.

The group, mainly comprising of incumbent and former governors, We gathered, want the Makarfi to become the presidential flag bearer for the PDP.

It was also gathered that while the PDP has zoned its presidential candidate for 2019 to the north, its national chairman has been reserved for the southwest zone.

Sources within the PDP said Makarfi is a "cleaner candidate" for the party to produce for 2019 election.

One of the sources said it is widely believed among party members that the former Kaduna state governor bears no political liability and would make for an easy campaign and win for the party in 2019.

A source said most of the other party members who have shown interest in vieing for the position as the party's flag bearer have one issue or the other with either the authorities or the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The sources also said the allowing Makarfi become the party's flag bearer would serve as a compensation for holding forte during the crisis experienced by the PDP.

Although Makarfi is yet to indicate interest in the forth coming general election, words have it that he would make in ambition to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari know once a new national chairman is elected for the party in December.

We previously reported the governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, officially declared his ambition to run for presidency in 2019.

Fayose while making his declaration in Abuja said, he is the right person to lead Nigerians out of the nation's present condition.

The governor also said that his decision to run for presidency is due to the love he has for Nigeria
