A former governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa has said politicians are behind the incessant killings in the country which are being attributed to herders-farmers conflicts.

In an interview shortly after the state PDP stakeholders meeting held at his residence in Sokoto, Bafarawa said that the killings were politically motivated, Daily Trust reports.

He stated: "Politicians are behind the killings. If you observe it critically and objectively, you will realise it is not the normal Fulani-farmers conflict. it is purely political because herdsmen are not known to be carrying dangerous and sophisticated weapons.”

“It means some politicians are using these people to achieve their selfish political goal," Bafarawa added.

He advised President Buhari to always act on pieces of advice and recommendations by eminent Nigerians not minding the personality of the adviser or his party affiliation.

He said that this was the only way to find a lasting solution to the crisis in the country.

Reacting to the recent letter written to President Buhari by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the PDP chieftain said Obasanjo was entitled to his own opinion but advised the president to study the letter faithfully and do the needful.

On the advice that the President should not recontest in 2019, he said it is at the president’s deicretion but he needs to make some necessary correction to regain the support of the masses.

Commenting on the resolution reached at the stakeholders meeting that he should contest the 2019 presidential election, he said they are still considering the option.

He noted that contesting election required intensive consultation before presenting oneself to the party and electorates.

The former governor also said that things were not going right because the change that APC brought to Nigerians was that of hardship and hunger.

According to him, what Nigerians need was responsible and honest leaders not PDP or APC, urging them to resort to prayers for God to provide them with one.

We previously reported that that the federal government was set to back out from its proposed cattle colonies.

A report showed that the 10-man working committee constituted a few days ago by the National Economic Council to end attacks by herdsmen decided that every state should design its own solutions.

The committee proposed that the states should come up with the solutions after a rigorous consultative process with all stakeholders.

The committee, headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, comprises the governors of Adamawa, Benue, Ebonyi, Edo, Kaduna, Oyo, Plateau and Zamfara states.
