Sani, who is a senator under the umbrella of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said most of the president's aides are misinforming the public or rationalising the violence of herdsmen attacks.

He urged the president to put an end to the crisis soon to avoid jeopardizing the security and unity of the country, Nigerian Tribune reports.

He said: "We must move to end this crisis. This is a crisis that is undermining the peace and stability of this country and the president must call his aides to order.

"It is wrong for the president’s aides or his political appointees to try to misinform the general public by justifying or rationalising the reason for the violence. Many lives were lost. It is time for us to find a solution to the problem.

"The killings in Benue, Adamawa and Taraba are unacceptable and they should be rightly condemned. The exchange of words between Christian Association of Nigeria and Jama’atu Nasril-l-Islam is most unfortunate.

"We must take these things very seriously. Nigeria has never been more divided than now. The North is no more one. People are speaking of ethnic and religious divides. The earlier we bring an end to this the better."

When asked if he would support President Buhari to contest for a second term in office, Sani said the president is yet to make his decision public.

He said: "He has not made his intentions known. That means there are issues. If there are no issues, the president would have already made a public pronouncement. For the fact that he is reserving his intentions and keeping people in suspense shows that he is measuring his ropes to know what is best for him.

"As far as I am concerned, he has the constitutional right to contest and my views might not necessarily be accepted. For a man who has attained about 75 years of age, if he decides to re-contest, he knows the pressure that will come to bear on his health, his family. And if he chooses not to contest, certainly, he will still be a national hero. He will be a hero because he has already achieved what he wanted to achieve."

Meanwhile, We previously reported that one of Senator Shehu Sani's aides, Bashir Ahmed Hamadada has been nabbed and kept from communicating with people by soldiers in Kaduna.

Hamadada, who is said to have been making critical posts on the political happenings in the state, was arrested on Tuesday, January 30, at his home in Tudun-Wada area of Kaduna metropolis in the afternoon.
