Danladi Umar, the embattled chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), declared on Tuesday, February 6, that he was prepared to fight off the corruption charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to a report by Premium Times.
The report said this is the first time Umar would speak about the charges against him.
Umar claimed he was facing trumped up charges and expressed optimism he would win.
“We’re waiting for the court summon and which judge the case will be assigned to. After that, we’ll see how this would play out,” Umar said through the tribunal’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Al-Hassan.
He accused the EFCC of unstable tactics, recalling that he had earlier been cleared twice by the same agency that is leveling claims against him.
It was learnt that the Umar allegedly collected N10 million from Rasheed Taiwo, a former customs official who was facing false assets declaration charges before the Code of Conduct Tribunal sometime in 2012.
Umar was also accused of receiving N1.8 million of the N10 million bribe sum through one of his personal assistants, Gambo Abdullahi.
The report said Umar wondered why Festus Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has become the prosecuting counsel in the bribery case, especially since his law firm had been standing as defence counsel for Taiwo.
“Keyamo was the defence counsel for the ex-customs official that was charged for falsely declaring his assets.

“But now he has suddenly become the EFCC prosecutor to charge the CCT chairman for the allegations that his client brought.”
The report quoted Keyamo as saying he had no comments when he was contacted.
“Any objection he has, he should raise it in court,” he said.
We earlier reported how Nigeria’s Senate president, Bukola Saraki, sympathised with Danladi Umar, who had been charged with fresh charges of fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Saraki in a statement on Tuesday, February 6, recalled how the EFCC had in April 2016 swiftly cleared Umar of any wrongdoing when his lawyers asked the tribunal chairman to drop himself from a case because of the criminal investigation against him.
