2019: Loyalists Mount Pressure On Tinubu To Dump APC

Pressures have been mounting on the national leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to resign his membership of the ruling party due to perceived gang up against him by the top hierarchy of the party who is being aided by powerful cabals close to the presidency.

An investigation by Nigerian NewsDirect revealed that several political associates of the former Lagos State governor felt slighted by the tenure elongation given to the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun who has roundly been rejected by Tinubu.

The Jagaban of Borgu had severally called for his resignation and had proposed a caretaker committee to take over the administration of the party from Oyegun at the last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting but some powerful clique within the party ensured Oyegun was given lifeline to continue with his job as the party’s helmsman.

Few weeks ago, Tinubu’s wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, revealed that she occasionally scolded her husband for his unwavering support for the APC-led administration, despite the way he was treated.

“”I was hurt with, you know, what they did to my husband after the campaign,” Senator Tinubu said during an appearance on TV Continental’s ‘Your View’ in Lagos. “Occasionally I’ll chip in and say, you’re still helping out? Why are you helping out?”

The disclosure was perhaps the first direct confirmation that Asiwaju Tinubu felt betrayed by the APC administration after he helped the party come to power in 2015

All the critical offices, especially the Senate President and its deputy and House Speaker and its deputy, went to individuals who were not favoured by the APC.

The outcome is believed to have severely affected the party’s unity, as its fallout could still be felt nearly three years on.

Investigation by Nigerian NewsDirect revealed that Tinubu was not carried along when Buhari formed his cabinet and was not given any slot to nominate cabinet minister; he was largely left out of that arrangement too.

During fuel shortage in 2016, Tinubu had openly criticised the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, as being insensitive to the suffering of the citizens. He had questioned the capability of Kachikwu and wondered how he made it to the President’s cabinet.

Buhari, who is the substantive Petroleum Minister did not make any comment and if Kachikwu was reprimanded, it was not made public, Kachikwu is still  in his office as Minister of State for petroleum.

Also in 2016, Tinubu asked for resignation of Oyegun , he accused the national chairman of injustice and repudiating his ‘national leader’ title.

Just two weeks ago, Tinubu reported Oyegun to the President and accused the national chairman of sabotaging his efforts as the head of reconciliation team of the party.

President Buhari had named Tinubu as the head of committee that would resolve all disputes in the State chapters of the party but Tinubu lamented that steps being taken by Oyegun were meant to make the job of his committee as efforts in futility.
