Nigeria police intercepts herdsmen with firearms, army uniforms in Ebonyi state

- The Nigeria police has made a breakthrough in the fight against herdsmen

- Men of the Ebonyi state police command intercepted a Toyota Hummer bus along the Abakaliki-Ogoja federal highway

- Firearms and several rounds of ammunition were recovered from the bus

Men of the Ebonyi state police command today, Saturday, April 21 seized firearms and several rounds of ammunition when they intercepted a Toyota Hummer bus along the Abakaliki-Ogoja federal highway.

According to Daily Trust, the incident happened which before Onu-Ebonyi bridge Nwaezeyi, in Izzi local government of Ebonyi state, came after one month a herder attacked and killed three persons in Onunwakpu community close to the scene of the arrest.

The bus was bearing the inscription Taraba Express and was intercepted by policemen on stop and search duty before the bridge along that axis of the federal highway.

During the arrest, 7 Fulani people were said to have been in bus which had Lagos state registration plate number.

“It was the policemen on Safer Highway Operations that stopped the bus and as normal with their usual stop and search operation they found firearms and army uniforms stocked in three big sacks.

“Also found were uncountable ammunition, rifles which is above 16 in number including explosives, local charm,” an unnamed source quoted in the report said.

The source added that weapons such as rifles were hidden in big sack bags while the others were in cartons.

The Ebonyi state police command are yet to disclose where the bus took off from and its destination.

The bus is presently in the custody of the state police command headquarters, Abakaliki.

Meanwhile, troops of 72 Special Forces Battalion on Monday, April 16, on Operation MESA at Yogbo in Guma local government area of Benue state encountered about 20 militia herdsmen at Teguma village while on patrol.

According to a statement sent to NAIJ.com by the director army public relations, Brigadier-General Texas Chukwu, four of the militia herdsmen were neutralized during the encounter while others fled following superior gun power.

“Items recovered include four AK 47 rifles, five 7.62mm rounds of ammunition and 28 rounds of 7.62 police special ammunition,” the statement read.
