- A committee set up to investigate the alleged hacking of President Muhammadu Buhari's medical records has written to UK and US government

- This was made known by a source within the presidency

The federal government has written to the government of United States and United Kingdom over the alleged hacking of President Muhammadu Buhari's medical records by Cambridge Analytica.

The letters were sent by the committee set up by the federal governmnet to investigate the revelation that President Buhari's medical records were hacked by Cambridge Analytica before the 2015 general election.

The committee was set up to prove that the Peoples Democratic Party in 2007 and 2015 elections broke the laws of the country or infringed on the rights of other parties and their candidates.

Punch reports that the federal government is also considering the appointment of a special investigator and possibly start criminal prosecution through the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

While confirming the correspondence, sources within the presidency said it is not yet clear whether the two countries have responded to the letter by the committee.

The source said: “You will recall that when the news broke, the government set up what we called an in-house committee to investigate the matter."

The last I heard about that committee was that they have written to the US and the UK for more information on what happened.

I am yet to find out if those countries have responded and the stage which the committee is now," the source added.

Also speaking on the matter, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Garba Shehu said had had not being briefed on the issue.

Shehu noted that it was the right of Nigerians for the PDP, Facebook and Cambridge Analytical to explain their roles in the matter.

He however said he sought for details on the matter on his return from President Buhari's two-day working visit to Jigawa state.

Shehu said: “Nigerians deserve answers immediately from the PDP administration, Facebook and Cambridge Analytica on how and why they improperly obtained and used data to interfere in Nigerian elections."

“An investigation should help to determine if there is a linkage between the various killings and maimings that have characterised our elections since 2007 and the misinformation activities of the Cambridge Analytica data flows.

“Such investigations will also help President Buhari to achieve his wish to leave a legacy of improved elections," Shehu said.

We earlier reported that an employee of the Cambridge Analytica had testified against a UK company during one of its parliament sessions.

The employee said the company hired an Israeli firm to hack into President Buhari’s data before the elections in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Cambridge Analytica is said to have shut down its operations after the dust raised from the scandals rocking the company.

The company said it cannot continue operations in the face of the mounting legal fees incurred due to the scandal.
