Governors of the south south region on Wednesday, May 30, joined their Rivers state counterpart, Nyesom Wike, in his demand for 13% derivation from the federal government.

The governors who met in Rivers state restated their demand for restructuring and 13% derivation from the excess crude account.

Speaking after their meeting, the governor of Bayelsa state, Seriake Dickson, said they want a 13% derivation from the $1 billion withdrawn from the excess crude account by the federal government for security.

Dickson added that the governors' clamour for restructuring is line with true federalism. He also said the demand is in accordance with the provision of the 1999 constitution as amended.

“The South-South Governors Forum supports the clamour for restructuring, fiscal federalism and devolution of power from the centre to the federating units.

“The governors said for Nigeria to be stable, peaceful and prosperous, it should be restructured. They vowed to work with like minds to make it a reality," Dickson said.

Supporting the devolution of powers among the federating states, Dickson also called for the withdrawal of the bill on the management and administration of water resources from the National Assembly.

Governors present at the one day meeting include, Nyesom Wike of Rivers state, Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state and Dickson of Bayelsa state.

However, Ben Ayade of Cross River state was absent at the meeting of the south south governors.

Meanwhile, We previously reported that Wike had urged the federal government pay his state its 13% derivation fund from the $1 billion recently withdrawn from the Excess Crude Account.

Wike while speaking during the Leadership Newspaper Governor of the Year award for 2017 presented to him in Abuja, said it is mandatory for the constitutional procedure to be followed.

He also said he has been officially approached to lobby the Rivers state House of Assembly to approve the resolution mandating the withdrawal of the said funds.
