Ekiti guber: Dino Melaye accuses Buhari of militarising democracy

Ekiti guber: Dino Melaye accuses Buhari of militarising democracy

Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West senatorial district, has chided President Muhammadu Buhari-led government for drafting over 30,000 policemen to Ekiti ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Saturday.

He said that the President was out to militarise democracy, as he carpeted the Nigeria Police for not offering such huge numbers of officers when there was crisis in any part of the country.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday under order 42 and 52 of Senate rules, he said: “Mr. President, I rise this morning to read in the papers, that 30,000 police men were drafted to Ekiti over election scheduled for Saturday.”

“Election is a civic duty and it is common practice all over the world that we need not militarise elections. I am appalled that there is crisis in Zamfara, in Plateau, Kaduna, Taraba and this number of policemen were not drafted.

“I heard that the Force Police Public Relations (PPRO), Jimoh Moshood stated that about 30,000 police were drafted to Ekiti.”

“I wish to submit that the Nigeria Police furnish this Senate the names and service numbers of those drafted: where they were drafted from and where they are going.

“We cannot sit down as Senate seeing democracy turned to militocracy.

“If we do not get up, history will not forgive us and nobody should be allowed to run the country as a club.”

However, Senator Kabir Marafa differed on Dino Melaye’s submission, asserting that the Nigerian Senate cannot be reduced into dabbling to the work of the Police.

He said the peculiarities of Ekiti state might be responsible for the drafting of such number of policemen, insisting that there was no need asking the Police to furnish the Senate detail of their actions.

He recalled that former president Goodluck Jonathan drafted the military to Ekiti state in the last election that brought Ayodele Fayose into office for second term.

Marafa sided with the Police, stressing that Ekiti people and their properties deserve to be protected.
