Anambra Assembly confirms 18, steps down 3 LG transition committee chairmen

The Anambra State House of Assembly on Thursday screened and confirmed the appointment of 18 and stepped down three other people nominated by Governor Willie Obiano as Chairmen, Local Government Transition Committee.

Obiano had in a letter dated January 3, sent list of the nominees to the state assembly for consideration and confirmation.

The tenure of the transitional committee, as approved by the state assembly, is three months, after which it could be renewed or fresh appointments made.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the House reverted to a Committee of the Whole, with the Speaker, Uche Okafor, as the Chairman, to confirm the nominees.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Chairman of Onitsha South LGA, Emeka Asoanya, thanked the legislators for confirming their appointment. Asoanya promised that they would work with the executive and legislative arms of government to make Anambra an enviable state.

Meanwhile, the two members representing Onitsha North I and ll, Doughlas Egbunna and Eddy Ibuzor, said they could not confirm the nomination of Patrick Aghamba as LG chairman due to petitions of alleged criminalities against him. According to them, he cannot be confirmed until investigations are concluded.

Also, Lawrence Ezeudu, representing Dunukofia, rejected the nomination of Emeka Okonkwo as the Chairman, LG Transition Committee in his constituency.

“I speak for the Dunukofia people and they have asked me to step down the chairman nominated by the Governor,” he said.

Contributing, Ifeanyi Chiekwu, representing Idemili North, expressed reservations over the nomination of Raphael Nnabuife as the Chairman of the LG transition committee in his constituency.
“There are a lot of issues surrounding the nomination of the chairman and until they are resolved, I am stepping him down,” he said.

Commenting, Sunny Ozorbialu (Nnewi South l) also expressed reservations over a member nominated to work with the chairman of the Local Government Transition Committee in his constituency.

“The nominee from Amichi Ward l, Okechukwu Offia is now late. He died on December 31, 2019. I am, however, calling for a replacement,” he said.
