Kaduna killings: I did not ask Christians to attack Muslims back - Taraba governor

Taraba governor denies inciting religious violence

- The Taraba state governor has clarified his earlier call for Christians to defend themselves against terrorism

- The governor said his call was not to incite violence but to start an awakening for strategy to combat the ongoing religious killings

The governor of Taraba state, Darius Ishaku has said that his call on Christians across the country to rise up and defend themselves against terrorists was not a call for taking up arms but rather a call for more sensitivity and proactive networking with each other and security agencies to protect themselves and their communities against unprovoked attacks by armed groups.

On January 9, Darius urged Christians across the country to rise up and defend themselves against terrorism.

Ishaku stated this in a press release signed by the senior special assistant to the governor on media and publicity, Mr Slyvanus Yakubu Giwa yesterday in Jalingo. He said the call was to enhance vigilance rather than passive ignorance of the security challenges in the country.

The statement explained that in the past months, the governor had urged people to be conscious of the influx of migrants with questionable intent who later become attackers overnight, sacking communities, causing mayhem, killing innocent people and destroying properties.

It added that the strategy of engaging community members in reporting suspicious movements and whistle blowing proved effective in managing the security challenges and ushering in relative peace in various parts of the state.

The statement reads: “The governor’s statement therefore should not be misconstrued to mean a call for taking up arms but rather a call for more sensitivity and proactive networking with each other and security agencies to protect themselves and their communities against unprovoked attacks by armed groups.”

Meanwhile, the Council of Imams and Ulama, Kaduna state, has called for the arrest of President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Dr Samson Ayokunle, Senator representing Southern Kaduna Senatorial Zone, Senator Danjuma La’ah and the President of Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, SOKAPU, Dr Musa Solomon over their inflammatory comments over Southern Kaduna killings.

The Imams made the call at a briefing by the Chairman and Secretary General, Sheikh Abubakar Babantune, and Yusuf Arrigasiyyu, said: “In the last one year or so, Kaduna State has not been in peace resulting from the activities of some mischief-makers and the reckless utterances of southern Kaduna political and religious leaders.”
