Local governments in Nigeria lack the capacity to manage funds– Gov

- Governor of Gombe state, Dr Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo says that local governments in Nigeria lack the capacity to manage funds

- The governor argued further that most educated people dislike working in the local government system.

- He said state governments allocations should be increased to cater for local governments

Dr Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, governor of Gombe state has argued that releasing more funds to local governments in Nigeria is unwise, given their inability to manage such funds.

According to him, Nigerian local governments have weak managerial and administrative capacity to efficiently implement programmes and projects for the welfare and wellbeing of the people.

The governor said this while delivering a lecture titled: “The States in the Nigeria Federation” at the 18th Founders Day lecture of the Igbinedion University, Okada in Ovia North East local government.

The governor argued further that most educated people dislike working in the local government.

He said Nigerians prefer jobs in the urban areas.

Dankwambo claimed that for effective management of local governments in the country, states allocation should be increased with new framework on how they will utilize the resources at the local level and improve accountability.

His said: “There is the need to increase the allocation to states to strengthen their capacity to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities.

“Local governments do not have the capacity as the states but that could be addressed gradually and in synergy with the state government.

“However, the states should be more accountable. If there is prudent management of resources, states could really transform lives in their areas of jurisdiction.”

Meanwhile, according to the Gombe state Agricultural Development Project (ADP), the tomato pest, Tuta Absoluta, has seriously affected tomato harvests in three local governments in the state.

In 2016, the destructive tomato pest, destroyed tomato farms across Nigeria causing an astronomical increase in the market price of tomato.

The Pest Control Officer, Abba Dreba, in Gombe on Wednesday, May 10 told said the affected local governments were Akko, Kwami and Yamltu-Deba.
