Lagos State CJ Approves Monthly Visitation Of Magistrates To Police Stations

Justice Opeyemi Oke

The Honourable Justice of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke has finally designated magistrates to conduct monthly visitation of all police stations in Lagos State.

The visitation which is to be conducted once in a month, is a direct answer to the call made by Falana’s law firm, Falana and Falana’s Chamber, last December, to conduct such exercise.

We recall that the request was made to the Honourable Chief Judge of Lagos State, with a view to end the indiscriminate arrest and illegal detention of criminal suspects and other innocent citizens residing or visiting Lagos State as envisaged by section 34 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

According to a statement released by the Learned Silk, Femi Falana SAN, the designated magistrates have since swung into action ever since the approval was made by the Lagos State Chief Judge.

Mr. Femi Falana SAN is therefore calling on the five branches of the NBA in Lagos State and the media to monitor the visitation which is to be conducted every month.

The approval is a development worthy of applaud, as it will go a long way to checkmate the excesses of the Law Enforcement agency in Lagos State, most precisely the Nigerian Police. Other States in the Federation are hereby advised to follow suite.
