Magu writes CJN, wants justice Nyako taken off EFCC cases

Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has requested that Binta Nyako should be taken off the cases of the anti-graft agency.

The EFCC boss made the request in a letter written to Walter Onnoghen, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Magu asked for the cases to be reassigned to another judge, in a bid to obtain fair hearing.

Binta Nyako is a justice of a federal high court in Abuja.

Tony Orilade, acting spokesman of the commission, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, Onjefu Obe, EFCC prosecuting counsel, made the commission’s position known during the trial of Umar Bida, Truth Igogori, Ifenyinwa Nwankwesiri and Ogechukwu Obaji.

The four individuals are being prosecuted by the EFCC over their involvement in a $1 million fraud.

The EFCC had in 2017 arraigned the defendants before Nyako on a nine-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forgery and obtaining by false pretence the sum of $1million.

Obe told the court on Wednesday that the EFCC wants its cases reassigned because of a likely bias on the part of the judge, considering that the anti-graft agency is also prosecuting her husband, Murtala Nyako, a former governor of Adamawa.
