United States Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell has emphasized the US commitment to initiate a committed dialogue with Nigeria to strengthen its presence at international forums.
Campbell made this known on Tuesday during a press conference in Abuja during the sixth session of the Nigeria-US Binational Commission.
He reaffirmed US efforts to support Nigeria’s aspirations to join the United Nations Security Council, the G20 and other global bodies, with the aim of amplifying African voices on the world stage.
The UN Security Council has the authority to impose binding obligations on the 193 UN member states to maintain peace.
The Security Council has five permanent members: the United States, China, France, Russia and the United Kingdom.
Nigerian Foreign Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar said in October 2023 that it was time for Nigeria to join the UN Security Council.
The Deputy Secretary, however, reiterated the United States’ unwavering support for Nigeria in pursuing these goals.
He acknowledged the complexities surrounding the Security Council, but emphasized the potential for practical steps by both countries to advance Nigeria’s objectives.
“We are committed to initiating a special dialogue between the United States and Nigeria on how we can advance Nigeria’s ambitions in international fora.
“Not only in the UN Security Council, but also in the G20 and other global institutions where African voices have not been as loud as they need to be. So I just want to emphasize that the United States is behind Nigeria in these ambitions.
‘I don’t need to tell you about the complexity of the Security Council. But we do believe there are practical steps we can both take that will help move forward what Nigeria wants to achieve.”
In his remarks, Tuggar highlighted the significant growth of their collaborative partnership and underscored the value of further strengthening ties.
“It was two days of robust engagement and interface issues, mutual interests. Our two countries’ cooperative partnership has grown significantly in recent years and this visit has been a valuable opportunity to further strengthen our ties.
“During our discussions, we discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interest, including security, human development, technology and economic prosperity. Both sides have recognized the importance of our shared values through realism and respect for sovereignty,” he noted.
The minister further expressed confidence in progress through mutual respect and cooperation, affirming the sustainable growth of the relationship between Nigeria and the United States.
“We also took this opportunity to renew our shared commitments to democracy, human rights and economic cooperation.
“The United States and Nigeria have a long history of cooperation. The two nations are committed to working together to tackle the challenges of the 21st century. The issues discussed over the past two days are complex and I am confident that progress will be made by working together in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation,” he added.
Established in 2010, the Nigeria-US BNC serves as a platform for high-level discussions on issues of mutual interest to enhance cooperation on shared priorities.
Discussions during the two-day event covered diverse topics such as security, human development, technology and economic prosperity, with both sides recognizing the importance of shared values and renewing their commitments to democracy, human rights and economic cooperation.
