Man,35, Arraigned Over Alleged N780,000 Fraud

Man,35, Arraigned Over Alleged N780,000 Fraud

A 35-year old man, Clement Olaiya, on Tuesday appeared before an Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged N780,000 fraud.

The Prosecutor, ASP. Pelumi Adejuwon, told the court that the accused, with others at large, conspired to defraud and obtained the sum of N780,000 from one Mr Dara Fadele.

Olaiya was arraigned on two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence and fraud.

Adejuwon said that the accused obtained the money under false pretence of procuring a Visa for Fadele.

He said that the accused committed the offence at Iju-Itaogbolu in Akure North Local Government area of Ondo State on March 7 at about 10 a.m.

According to him, the offence contravenes sections 517 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Law of Ondo State, 2006.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

Counsel to the accused, Mr Kayode Akinwunmi, prayed the court to grant his client bail in liberal conditions.

He said that the accused should still be presumed innocent under section 118(2) of the Criminal Procedure Law of Ondo State and section 36 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

Akinwumi said that his client was ready to provide a credible surety that would ensure his appearance in court.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Sunday Adedapo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in the sum of N50,000.

Adedapo said that the surety must not be a teacher or local government personnel “if at all a civil servant.’’

He said the surety must provide evidence of tax payment for the current year from the state internal revenue.

The magistrate also said that the surety must provide two recent passport-sized photographs.

Adedapo also directed that the residential address of the surety and the accused must be provided and verified by the court.

The case was adjourned to Dec. 16 for trial and definite ruling. (NAN)
