Two policemen have been apprehended by detectives from the Abia State Police Command following the fatal killing of a bystander at Agbo Emede community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.
Eyewitness said five policemen from Central Police Station, CPS, Umuahia had gone to the community with an intention to apprehend hemp dealers following information made available to them.
However the arrest went awry when they ventured into the hut of a palm wine seller and arrested him which attracted the attention of the youths of the community, who cordoned off the area demanding to know what the palm wine seller had done.
Not wanting to be dissuaded from performing the duty for which they came to the community for, the policemen, who were accused of raiding the area three times in one day, ordered the the youths to vacate the area.
Sources maintained that the youths insisted that they would not allow the police take away the palm wine seller, even the intervention of the youth leader of the community and others did not make any impact on the policemen.
It was gathered that in a bid to have their way, one of the policemen, who had earlier threatened that he would kill someone, allegedly loaded bullets into the chamber of his gun and began shooting sporadically, causing pandemonium within the area and a nearby primary school as pupils and teachers scampered ran helter skelter to escape.
One bullet was said to have hit a yet to be identified middle aged man said to be taking his child home from school on the jaw with the bullet passing out through the back skull, killing him instantly, while another person was lucky as another bullet scratched his ear.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Abia State Police Command Ezekiel Udeviotu said two were already in police net, while efforts were on to apprehending the three other accomplice on the run.
He maintained that the warning of the Inspector General Of Police concerning policemen and public was not going to be treated with levity, hence a full scale investigation into the incident had been opened with a view to unravelling what actually happened.
